  • The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs(MLTM) project for the DB construction of national geotechnical information was automatically computerized the geotechnical investigation results on the construction site in 2007. So 'the rule for computerizing of geotechnical investigation results and its application' were promoted the establishment and applicable project. It was promoted in earnest that all organization and affiliation of MLTM, local governments included the project because of stabilization of the law from 2008. We have analyzed a application-ratio of geotechnical information about users of geotechnical information system and distribution data and established a plan of applying enhancement for the DB construction and DB utilization in 2008. In this paper, we propose the result for application-ratio analysis and application plan through the application-case study of national geotechnical information DB. In the application-ratio analysis, the analysis in the field shows the most high as 39% in construction planning and preliminary investigation, the analysis in the effect of capabilities shows the most high as 25% in the increased efficiency of business. Also the analysis in the field of application shows the most high as 95% a application-ratio of geotechnical information in architecture and civil.

  • This paper reports the application of GPS (Global Positioning System) technique into the geotechnical information system. Typical example of such application can be the database of logging data. Other examples can be found from the surveying for road work, excavation work, landslide mapping and image processing of slope face. This paper also reports the enhancement method of the accuracy. The results from this study confirms that GPS could be a powerful tool for the future geotechnical investigation works in Korea.

  • Geotechnical Information Database Project was began by Ministry of Construction Transport at the 1999, because many people need a sharing and reusing the geotechnical report in construction process. In the beginning, target was report of national highway construction. the whole of country has been target on since the 2005. Today, the 60,581 number of geotechnical data(counted by boring number) is maintained. In this study, Geotechnical Information Distribute System(GIDS) was developed, in order to improve practical use and to be connected to National Geographic Information Center(NGIC). and program to be applicable to construction was suggested. We expect that GIDS make a effect to improve geotechnical data application and to be use in all part of construction process.

  • Collapse was one of the typical common geological hazards during the construction of tunnels. The risk assessment of collapse was an effective way to ensure the safety of tunnels. We established a prediction model of collapse based on Bayesian Network. 76 large or medium collapses in China were analyzed. The variable set and range of the model were determined according to the statistics. A collapse prediction software was developed and its veracity was also evaluated. At last the software was used to predict tunnel collapses. It effectively evaded the disaster. Establishing the platform can be subsequent perfect. The platform can also be applied to the risk assessment of other tunnel engineering.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the geotechnical characteristics and field application of soil mixed with waste lime. Waste lime used in this study is producted as a by-product in the manufacturing process of making Na$_2$CO$_3$from local chemical factory in Incheon. Currently about 320 milton tons of waste lime are accumulated and annually 100,000 tons are producted. In this study, feasible use of waste lime mixed with granited whathered soil, clay, crushed rock was invesigated through laboratory tests including specific gravity test, sieve analysis, hydrometer analysis, compaction test, CBR test. Field investigations were conducted on the road construction site in Incheon.

  • This study presents the application of genetic algorithms(GA) to the back analysis of tunnels. GA based on the theory of natural evolution, and have been evaluated very effective for their robust performances, particularly for optimizing structure problems. In the back analysis method, the selection of initial value and uncertainty of field measurements influence significantly on the analysis result. GA can improve this problems through a probabilistic approach. Besides, this technique have two other advantages over the back analysis. One is that it is not significantly affected by the form of problems. Another one is that it can consider two known parameter simultaneously. The propriety of this study is verified as the comparison in the same condition of the back analysis(Gens et al, 1987). In this study, it was performed to estimated the geotechnical parameters in the case of weak rock mass at the Kyung Bu Express railway tunnel. GA have been shown for effective application to a geotechnical engineering.

  • The following lessons have been learned from the application of reliability methods in the practice of geotechnical engineering: 1. Establishing Goals Is Important; 2. Mitigating Consequences Can Be Effective; 3. Performance Depends on Systems; 4. Physical Factors Are Important in Statistical Models; 5. Too Much and Too Little Conservatism Are Both Problems; 6. Value of Information Depends on Decision Making; and 7. Effective Communication Is Essential. While the potential for application of reliability methods in the future is unlimited, there are major needs related to each of these lessons that will have to be addressed in order to realize this potential.

  • The reliable measurement of geotechnical properties in cold regions should account for their fluctuations with temperature. The objective of this paper is to introduce a chemical model based on the Arrhenius equation that can predict the properties of materials as their temperature changes. The model can monitor phases and reaction rates as they change with temperature. It has been already applied in the fields of geology, construction, chemistry, materials engineering, and food science. The application of the Arrhenius equation requires a reliable estimate of the activation energy. Therefore, this study also demonstrates several methods for evaluating activation energy in different contexts through summaries and reviews of previous research related to the Arrhenius equation. This paper may be of wide use in obtaining temperature-dependent parameters in geotechnical engineering.
