A simple seismic design procedure for pile foundation using PAR and LPILE$\^$plus/ was proposed. A case of pile foundation under a simple bridge was selected and analyzed. The calculated horizontal movements, shear forces and moments were compared with those evaluated by the numerical exact solutions, and the farmers had similar trends with the tatters.
In case that there is not an influence of river influx because the foundation is a good rock and the mountain topography, we present the design case for the reasonable underpass foundation form, bearing capacity and drainage process considering the topography and the ground condition.
The single drilled shaft foundation has been used in the other countries, but has not used in South Korea at all This foundation is very effective and economic method in South Korea which is easy to meet a good rock mass within 50m depth from the ground We have many experiences to construct 1.52 5m drilled shaft foundations and ability to construct 30m drilled shaft foundation without special efforts The soil behavior is nonlinear, but it can be proposed in linear in practical purpose on bridges. The elastic modulus of soil can be rationally obtained by the method of Road Bridge Design Manual in South Korea using the Schmertmann(1970)'s proposal, and the elastic modulus of rock can be obtained by the field test. In seismic design the column and drilled shaft must be restricted to the elastic design because the behavior of this foundation is flexible and the arrangement of the rebars makes the various defect In this paper the design criteria is compared with FHWA design criteria, and the design criteria is proposed in consistent with Road Bridge Design Manual in South Korea. The single drilled shaft foundation of a test bridge was constructed in the Iksan-Jangsoo highway, and we checked its stability, workability and economy
On the Performance-based Design guideline techniques, many studies were not execued. Especially, some structures were studied on the evaluation of performance-based design. Geotechnical foundation on the structures are investigated in domestic and other countries.
The economic growth brought the demand of bridge connected to island and land increasingly in Korea. Therefore, Civil engineer has faced a lot of problem to be considered such as structural stability, economic feasibility and constructional method. At the bridge site to be constructed, the depth of water is about 24m, the thickness of weathered rock overlaying bed rock is thicker than 36m. If open caisson foundation is supported in bed rock, the hight of foundation is about 60m. It is difficult to construct in these conditions. If open caisson foundation is supported in weathered rock, the size of the foundation should be increased. And If we apply the pile foundation, the higher construction cost will be needed. Under the circumstances, we need a new foundation type-composite foundation that is consisted of open caisson and cast-in-place piles. Because the design concept of composite foundation is not presented in Korea Bridge Design Standard, we are willing to clear the bearing behavior of composite foundation by numerical analysis in this paper.
There are several types of foundations for light-weight structures, such as low story buildings, on soft clay deposits. Those foundations, such as piled raft, compensated foundation, mat foundation, floating foundation are commonly used rather then end-bearing piles to get more benefits on the construction and cost savings. In this study, settlement behaviors are computed and compared for several types of foundations on soft clay deposits. Also, theoretical expressions of parameters for piled raft system were provided with co-relations for design purposes. The predictions of settlements of piled rafts foundation are proposed based on the pile dimensions and design loads. From this study, the piled raft foundations is more benefits for reducing the settlement of clay deposits, and it is found that the piled raft system is applicable and effective on thick clay deposits, and that differential settlements of the foundation should be managed by designing the configuration of pile lengths.
In this study, several design and construction cases of the pile bent system for bridges were introduced. The lateral displacement of the pile bent system is larger than the displacement of pile cap system, due to the smaller bending stiffness and the longer unsupported length. So, the analysis of the lateral pile displacement is main factor for the design of pile bent system and superstructure. For the accurate estimation of the pile displacement, an iterative analysis method was developed. The superstructure was analyzed regarding the pile foundation as $6{\times}6$ spring and the substructure was analysed using non-linear load transfer curves (p-y, t-z, q-z curve). And, to verify this analysis method, the estimated displacements are compared with the results of lateral load test. This analysis method is expected to be a viable alternative approach for the design of bridge foundation hereafter.
Carbonate rocks such as limestone are susceptible to solution and show numerous solution cavities. For the construction of the structures such as bridge foundations and tunnel on the limestone cavities, the geological unconformities developed in the bed rocks, cavity systems and the filling types of solution deposits should be surveyed and analyzed. And also, the stability of structures on the limestone cavities must be taken into consideration in the view of the geotechnical engineering. As a result of analysis of the foundation settlement, an economic and effective reinforcement method is to be proposed and the construction by the proposed method is to be accompanied with verification of reinforcement effect. This paper is a case study of design and construction for the reinforcement of bridge foundations on the limestone cavity covered with thick bedded colluvial soils.
