  • Knowledge of organic micropollutant transfers in barrier seal materials from waste storage facilities is limited to volatile organic compounds and phenolic compounds at ambient temperature. This study focused on the sorption of chlorophenols (CPs) from various geotextiles from clay geosynthetics under the influence of temperature. Also to study the impact of the polarity or the amount of CPs adsorbed on geotextiles with the partition coefficient. The effect of various parameters such as contact time, effect of temperature, initial CPs concentration and adsorbent dosage has been carried out in this study. The result obtained is non-linear and the data was calculated for affinity with Freundlich isotherm model. An important observation is that the amount of CPs sorbed on geotextiles increases with a growing number of chlorine atoms, ie increases with the partition coefficient (log Kow). During this study, a decrease in adsorbent properties was observed with the rise in temperature from 23℃ to 55℃. The partitioning coefficients for CPs examined range are from 2.4 (R2 = 0.86) to 8.4 mL/g (R2 = 0.90). Among the CPs studied, the highest adsorbed quantity was observed for pentachlorophenol with 0.052 g/g at 23℃, this quantity will decrease with the increase in temperature.

  • This study concerns the effect of drainage in reinforced soil on its stability during rainfall. A series of finite-element analysis based transient seepage analysis were performed on a number of cases with different drainage conditions in terms of layers of geotextiles installed in the reinforced zone. The results were then coupled with the limit-equilibrium slope stability analysis to investigate the variation of global stability factor of safety with rainfall infiltration into the reinforced wall. The results were thoroughly analyzed to get insight into the mechanism of pore water pressure reduction effect of the geotextile and into its effect on overall slope stability. It is shown that layers of geotextile installed in the reinforced zone can prevent decrease in suction in the reinforced zone during rainfall, thereby reducing potential risk of decreasing shear strength of the reinforced zone. Practical implications of the findings were discussed.

  • This paper deals with a case study on a unique slope failure in a liner system of a municipal solid waste containment facility during construction because the sliding interface is not the geomembrane/compacted low permeability soil liner (LPSL) but a soil/soil interface within the LPSL. From the case study, it is concluded that compaction of the LPSL should ensure that each lift is kneaded into the lower lift so a weak interface is not created in the LPSL, and the LPSL moisture content should be controlled so it does not exceed the specified value, .e.g., 3% - 4% wet of optimum, because it can lead to a weak interface in the LPSL. In addition, drainage materials should be placed over the geomembrane from the slope toe to the top to reduce the shear stresses applied to the weakest interface, and equipment should not move laterally across the slope if it is unsupported but along the slope while placing the cover soil from bottom to top.

  • Earth reinforcement techniques are used worldwide and offer proven solutions to a wide range of geotechnical engineering problems. Here in this paper, recent developments of three major reinforced soil retaining wall methods in Japan were introduced in order to show how the current situation of this technique in Japan is. And the statistical data for the volume of the use was also shown, such as the total volume of the use, the scales of the structures, layout of the earth reinforcement, fill materials, and foundation conditions. Some of the case histories were also introduced with photographs and figures. And then, as one of recent research activity by the author, the study on the application of X-ray CT for the problem of earth reinforcement method combined with other method such as piling and soil improvement was introduced. In this study, a series of model test for several reinforced ground with geogrids was conducted using a newly developed test apparatus. Then, the behavior in the soil box was scanned after settlement using X-ray CT scanner. Based on these test results, the reinforcing effect by the geogrids and the soil arching effect over the pile heads was discussed precisely and those are done in 3-D with nondestructive condition. Finally, the effectiveness of the use of X-ray CT scanner in geotechnical engineering was promised.

  • This paper presents the results of plate load test and dynamic load test performed to evaluate the performance of geocell which is used to reinforce soft subgrade for high-speed railroad. Efficiency of geocell was observed in the increase in bearing capacity of subgrade and in the reduction of thickness of reinforced sub-ballast. One layer of geocell underlying a 10 cm thick cover soil led to an increase in bearing capacity three to four times larger than that of a crushed stone layer of the same thickness substituted for the geocell and cover soil layer Given the test conditions, the thickness of reinforced sub-ballast can be reduced by approximately 35 cm with the presence of geocell.

  • When enforced earth is used for the retain wall and four walls, the most important thing would be how to maximize the land utilization. Accordingly, in case of enforced earth, we pile up the minimal height of earth$(20\sim30cm)$ and harden the earth using a static dynamic hardening machine. In this paper, we tried to analyze and. compare the stress transformation characteristics of reinforced weathered granite soil. with geosynthetics when repetitive load is added to the enforced earth structure and when static load is added. The purposes of the study are as follows; 1) To compare and analyze non reinforced weathered granite soil and reinforced weathered granite. soil by executing a unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests. 2) To identify the strength characteristics of weathered granite soil reinforced with geotextile due to the repetitive dynamic loads through comparison of the stress due to the static load and the repetitive dynamic loads.

  • To calculate the long-term allowable strength of geosynthetic reinforcement, replacement method was recommended. The isochronous creep curve by S. Turner was used to define the relation between creep strain and allowable strength. In isochronous curve at given time, one can read the allowable strength at allowable creep strain. The allowable strain gets from specification by directors or manufacturers according to the allowable displacement of reinforced structures. The allowable strength can be determined in relation to the allowable horizontal displacement each structures case by case. The effect of install damage on isochronous behaviors of geosynthetic reinforcement was little. In previous study, install damage increase the creep strain slightly. And the degradation was not identified. But it is supposed that degradation increase the creep strain. In conclusion, The recommended model to determine long-term allowable strength of geosynthetic reinforcements considering tensile deformation of reinforcement and soil is fit for proper, correct and economic design for reinforced earth walls.

  • It is unavoidable to be formed slopes under special circumstance of Korea where 70% of the whole area are composed of mountains when civil engineering projects such as roads, site developments are increased with industrial development and horizontal expansions of urban area. Moreover, stability of the slopes become one of quite important issues under special meteorological characteristics that over two-thirds of annual average rainfall are concentrated in summer season and the localized torrential downpour are getting more frequent recently. Resulting in these circumstances, partial slope failures by debris flow of the high water content soils are occurred frequently in cutting soil slopes. In this case of debris flow slope failure, slope declination method are selected for their stable recovery because it is impossible to recover entirely by existing recovery methods. Seeding or special grass planting methods are followed separately without exception. The method by which entire recover with bigger stability ratio would be possible and grass planting work would be done simultaneously is developed. In this study, the results of the tests including a real construction history in a failed slope using developed method are described
