  • The mobile mapping system first introduced at Ohio State University in 1991 is being developed in various forms as sensor technology develops. The mobile mapping system can acquire geospatial information around amoving object quickly using the information gathered using the position and attitude information of the moving object and the data from various sensors. The mobile mapping system can rapidly acquire large amounts of Geospatial information and MMS provides maximum productivity in the same measurement methods as existing GNSS and total stations. Currently, a variety of systems are being launched, mainly by foreign companies, and they are applied to the construction of geospatial information. On the other hand, the application of domestic technology development or production is insufficient. This paper provides basic data for the introduction of a mobile mapping system to geospatial information related business by conducting the status survey and feature analysis of a commercialized system focusing on the ground-based mobile mapping system. The research identified the current status and characteristics of high-priced, low-priced, indoor, and handheld mobile mapping systems based on vehicles and suggest that the recent system development trends are moving toward lowering the unit prices. The mobile mapping system is currently being developed as a platform for the application of geospatial information construction and the launch of low-cost models. The development of data processing technologies, such as automatic matching and the launch of low-cost models, are forming a basis for the application of mobile mapping systems in the field of geospatial information construction.

  • The GIS construction project using the Digital Map has been progressed actively since the enforcement of NGIS project in 1995. But, the Digital Map actually can't use directly in building GIS because of many defects of the digital map such as geometric features errors(the overshoot/undershoot of line or the opening of polygon), non-topology etc. Many advanced countries in GIS has provided users Framework Data which is generated topology defined spatial relationships and used as a basic data of national geospatial information. In this study, we proposed the definition and the scope of Framework Data as a basemap of the Nation Geospatial Information and studied for the management and construction of the Transportation/Road Framework Data which is a core and basic data among them.

  • Recent growth of the geospatial information on the Web has made it possible to easily access a wide variety of geospatial information. An integration of different geospatial objects consists of the following three steps; extracting geospatial objects from the maps, converting the coordinate system and discovering pairs of objects that represent the same real-world entity in the two maps. This paper deals mainly with the third step to correspond conjugate objects and four matching types and criteria is presented. The techniques designed and developed can be utilized to efficiently integrate distributed heterogeneous spatial databases such as the digital maps and POIs from other data sources. To achieve the goal, we presented four types and criteria for the matching schema. The main contributions of this paper are as follows. A complete process of integrating data from maps on the Web is presented. Then, we show how attributes of the objects can be used in the integration process.

  • South Korea experiences few large scale erosion and sedimentation problems, however, there are numerous local sedimentation problems. A reliable and consistent approach to modelling and management for sediment processes are desirable in the country. In this study, field measurements of sediment concentration from 34 alluvial river basins in South Korea were used with the Modified Einstein Procedure (MEP) to determine the total sediment load at the sampling locations. And then the Flow Duration-Sediment Rating Curve (FD-SRC) method was used to estimate the specific degradation for all gauging stations. The specific degradation of most rivers were found to be typically 50-300 tons/㎢·yr. A model tree data mining technique was applied to develop a model for the specific degradation based on various watershed characteristics of each watershed from GIS analysis. The meaningful parameters are: 1) elevation at the middle relative area of the hypsometric curve [m], 2) percentage of wetland and water [%], 3) percentage of urbanized area [%], and 4) Main stream length [km]. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of existing models is in excess of 1,250 tons/㎢·yr and the RMSE of the proposed model with 6 additional validations decreased to 65 tons/㎢·yr. Erosion loss maps from the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), satellite images, and aerial photographs were used to delineate the geospatial features affecting erosion and sedimentation. The results of the geospatial analysis clearly shows that the high risk erosion area (hill slopes and construction sites at urbanized area) and sedimentation features (wetlands and agricultural reservoirs). The result of physiographical analysis also indicates that the watershed morphometric characteristic well explain the sediment transport. Sustainable management with the data mining methodologies and geospatial analysis could be helpful to solve various erosion and sedimentation problems under different conditions.

  • Recently, ICT environments have been increasingly developed and the pattern of the war also has been changed to NCW. The development of communication and network technology, for example, C4I and TDL(Tactical Data Link), has been prosperous and rapid. But the geospatial intelligence field which is the basis of the network frames relatively has not been developed. The purpose of this paper is to foster the geospatial governance in terms of the defense perspective. In order to do that, this paper deals with the U.S. Intelligence Community(IC) and the U.S. Army Global Information Grid(GIG), LandWarNet and those could be good examples of roles and statuses of geospatial intelligence. IC has been produced essential intelligence which is required for policymakers and military leaders. IC has several stove-piped intelligence process systems which have been separately developed and competed. And so as to complete GIG, the U.S. Army adopted LandWarNet. The U.S. Corps of Engineers organized the Army Geospatial Center(AGC) on 1 October 2009 to support LandWarNet. In order to develop NCW, we should recognize geospatial intelligence as the basis of network framework and make a central leading organization of defense geospatial intelligence. The mission of Korea Defense Geospatial-Intelligence Agency should be changed from producing GEOINT to a strategic GEOINT agency. The Army should organize a laboratory of geospatial intelligence field. The mission of producing GEOINT should be transferred to a geospatial intelligence battalion which is newly organized.

  • The recent increase in impermeable surfaces due to urbanization and the occurrence of concentrated heavy rainfall events caused by climate change have led to an increase in urban flooding. To predict and prepare for flood damage, a convenient and highly accurate simulation of rainfall-runoff based on geospatial information is essential. In this study, the storm water management model (SWMM) was applied to simulate rainfall runoff in the Bangbae-dong area of Seoul, using two sets of topographical data: The conventional topographic digital elevation model (TOPO-DEM) and the proposed shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM)-DEM. To evaluate the applicability of the SRTM-DEM for rainfall-runoff modeling, two DEMs were constructed for the study area, and rainfall-runoff simulations were performed. The construction of the terrain data for the study area generally reflected the topographical characteristics of the area. Quantitative evaluation of the rainfall-runoff simulation results indicated that the outcomes were similar to those obtained using the existing TOPO-DEM. Based on the results of this study, we propose the use of SRTM-DEM, a more convenient terrain data, in rainfall-runoff studies, rather than asserting the superiority of a specific geospatial data.

  • The present study was aimed to estimate the urban sprawl in a historical city of India using series of satellite data between 1968 and 2005(37 years) and GIS. The total area of the Tiruchirappalli city was 1991.96 ha during 1968 and it was expanded into 4335.98 ha(117.67%) during 2005. The average growth rate per year was 63.35 ha. This 117.67% growth was at the cost of agriculture land(97.81%) and water body(2.19%). The satellite data used in this study were found to be good source of information for this kind of analysis and further studies are need to estimate the impact of this city expansion on agriculture yield and ground water.

  • With regarding to web GIS, OGC promotes WFS allowing a client to retrieve geospatial data encoded in GML which is a modeling language to encode the semantics, syntax and schema of geospatial information resources. Even though GML provides benefits for geographic description, it is too heavy to be processed by mobile devices. In order to address the issue, this paper evaluates GML service with WFS server and GML viewers. Through this paper, we get analyses of properties of GML geospatial data and the effects on wireless devices, which are expected to be fundamental materials onto a design of mobile applications.
