The damped least-squares inversion has become a most popular method in finding the solution in geophysical problems. Generally, the least-squares inversion is to minimize the object function which consists of data misfits and model constraints. Although both the data misfit and the model constraint take an important part in the least-squares inversion, most of the studies are concentrated on what kind of model constraint is imposed and how to select an optimum regularization parameter. Despite that each datum is recommended to be weighted according to its uncertainty or error in the data acquisition, the uncertainty is usually not available. Thus, the data weighting matrix is inevitably regarded as the identity matrix in the inversion. We present a new inversion scheme, in which the data weighting matrix is automatically obtained from the analysis of the data resolution matrix and its spread function. This approach, named 'extended active constraint balancing (EACB)', assigns a great weighting on the datum having a high resolution and vice versa. We demonstrate that by applying EACB to a two-dimensional resistivity tomography problem, the EACB approach helps to enhance both the resolution and the stability of the inversion process.
Recent earthquakes near nuclear power plants in Korea have triggered public concerns about possible seismicity of the Ulsan Fault Zone in the south-eastern part of the Korean peninsula. To reveal subsurface structures of this fault zone, we conducted high-resolution seismic refraction and reflection surveys, and closely spaced gravity measurements in the Dongchon River valley north of Ulsan, Korea. Here alluvium covers the north-south trending fault zone in a 1-km wide valley. Both source points and receivers were spaced at 5-m intervals for the 24-channel seismic refraction and reflection methods, along two profiles of 835 m and 415 m length. Gravity data were also measured along these profiles at 131 stations using a 10-m interval. Synergetic interpretation of seismic refraction, high-resolution seismic reflection, and gravity surveys across the valley indicates that the Ulsan Fault Zone was formed by apparent north-south strike-slip motions during the Cretaceous, and that some faults may have been reactivated by east-west compressional or transpressional stresses during the Tertiary or Quaternary.
In the two-dimensional (2D) modeling of electrical method, the potential in the space domain is reconstructed with the calculated potentials in the wavenumber domain using inverse Fourier transform. The inverse Fourier integral is numerically evaluated using the transformed potential at different wavenumbers. In order to improve the precision of the integration, either the logarithmic or exponential approximation has been used depending on the size of wavenumber. Two numerical methods have been generally used to evaluate the integral; interval integration and Gaussian quadrature. However, both methods do not consider the distance from the current source. Thus the resulting potential in the space domain shows some error. Especially when the distance from the current source is very small or large, the error increases abruptly and the evaluated potential becomes extremely unstable. In this study, we developed a new method to calculate the integral accurately by introducing the distance from the current source to the rescaled Gauss abscissa and weight. The numerical tests for homogeneous half-space model show that the developed method can yield the error level lower than 0.4 percent over the various distances from the current source.
Two piston cores (94PC-2 and 95PC-4) taken from the East Sea (Sea of Japan) are studied to evaluate the paleoceanographic changes and its interaction with climatic variation. The bulk geochemistry of the non-biogenic fractions of 54 sediment samples is determined using X-ray fluorescence. Four geochemical stratigraphic units at both core sediments are recognized based on the variations in major element concentration. These chemical stratigraphic units correspond well with the sedimentological and paleontological facies. Source materials are considered as basic and/or intermediate rocks judging from silica content. A distinctive boundary around 11 kyr may correspond to Younger Dryas event. The switch of most major elements at this level and the distinctive changes in concentration of typical terrigenous elements (TiO$_2$ and Al$_2$O$_3$) are the strong evidence for the difference in sources of terrigenous materials. The weathering indices exhibit high degree in Core 94PC-2 and low degree in Core 95PC-4. The changes in weathering degree can be distinguished by the lowest value occurred at 11 kyr in Core 94PC-2 and by a gradual decrease from top to bottom in Core 95PC-4. The profiles of potassium and sodium exhibit specific excursions between the Holocene and the late Pleistocene. This implies that sediments of the two cores originating from different sources with different weathering degrees. The distinct two-group distributions in K$_2$O/CaO vs. Na$_2$O/K$_2$O also support the difference in provenance of aluminosilicate materials at the boundary of 11 kyr. Thus, supply patterns of terrigenous materials are stable in Holocene and more complicated in the last glacial period.

Five core sediments acquired from the Lake Shihwa are analyzed for variations of sedimentary environment and heavy metal pollution after the Shihwa seawall construction. The depositional environment of the study area is divided into anoxic, oxic and mixed suboxic conditions based on the C/N ratio and C/S ratios of organic matters. Controlling factors for redox condition are the water depth and the difference in industrial effluents supply. Correlations among geochemical elements (Mn, U, Mo) show a distinctive difference and thus can be used as an indicator of redox condition. The content of Al, Ti are dependent on the sediment characteristics, and the contents of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) indicate heavy metal pollution. The concentrations of heavy metals are higher near Shiswa-Banwol industrial complexies than the central part of Lake Shihwa. Especially, the accumulation of the heavy metal at the surface sediments near Shihwa-Banwol industrial complex are two to eight times higher than in the center of Lake Shihwa.

The role of precise prediction of subsurface fluids and discrimination among them cannot be ignored in reservoir characterization and petroleum prospecting. A suitable rock physics model should be build for the extraction of valuable information form seismic data. The main intent of current work is to present a rock physics model to analyze the characteristics of seismic wave propagating through a cracked porous rock saturated by a three phase fluid. Furthermore, the influence on wave characteristics due to variation in saturation of water, oil and gas were also analyzed for oil and water as wet cases. With this approach the objective to explore wave attenuation and dispersion due to wave induce fluid flow (WIFF) at seismic and sub-seismic frequencies can be precisely achieved. We accomplished our proposed approach by using BISQ equations and by applying appropriate boundary conditions to incorporate heterogeneity due to saturation of three immiscible fluids forming a layered system. To authenticate the proposed methodology, we compared our results with White's mesoscopic theory and with the results obtained by using Biot's poroelastic relations. The outcomes reveals that, at low frequencies seismic wave characteristics are in good agreement with White's mesoscopic theory, however a slight increase in attenuation at seismic frequencies is because of the squirt flow. Moreover, our work crop up as a practical tool for the development of rock physical theories with the intention to identify and estimate properties of different fluids from seismic data.

The southwestern continental shelf of the East Sea, Korea developed mud deposits as a belt in the inner shelf area from Pusan to Pohang. The general surface sediments consist of very poorly to poorly sorted muddy sediment. The differences of physical, geological and geomorphic conditions in the study area may control and produce distinctive foraminiferal populations. To establish a baseline of environment for the muddy sediments in the southwestern continental shelf of the East Sea, 17 stations were sampled and proved to contain 45 species of living benthic foraminifera. Analysis of the foraminiferal populations in cluster analysis recognized to five habitat zones. These habitat zones contain distinctive cooccurrences of the entire occurring species. Foraminiferal community composition appeared to be closely interrelated of water masses, depths, nutrients and sediment characters.
The geologic structure of the Yongil Bay was studied in detail based on high resolution seismic profiles. The seafloor trends NE to SW with a deeper part off the Kuryong Peninsula. The seafloor is rather smooth due to the Quaternary fluvial deposits in the lower part and muddy sediments in the upper part. The seafloor off Umockri is very irregular due to erosion where Tertiary sedimentary rocks crop out. The underlying basement rocks were strongly deformed with faults and folds. High-angled reverse faults mostly trend N-S and NNW-SSE and are indicative of westward thrusting. Normal faults in NW-SE and WNW-ESE directions occur locally. Large folding structures trend NE-SW nearshore area of Umockri. The geologic structure suggests that the bay was subject to compressional stress regimes trending E-W and/or NW-SE prior to the early Late Miocene.

The use of the geophysical method in mining prospecting has been studied in the Asdaf region (South-East of Morocco). The objective of the study is to examine the aptitude of the electrical technique, in this case induced polarization (IP) and electric tomography, combined with the electromagnetic method (VLF), in the exploration of barite . The result obtained by the pseudo-sections of electrical tomography and that of KH filtration highlighted anomalies of resistant contact (greater than 400Ω.m) and of high charge chargeability (5mV / V). These contacts are hosted in less resistant Devonian age shale and sandstone. The resistivity response obtained at their level is characteristic of the venous structures associated with barite mineralization. The direction of the mineralized veins is parallel to the direction of the fractured zones (NE-SW), which indicates that the mineralization in place is due to the tectonic movements of the Hercynian orogeny (from Devonian to Permian). These veins are aligned with the locations of abandoned mine shafts and with surface mining areas. Geophysical technique therefore seems to play a key role in barite mining exploration.
LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) system has a profound impact on geoinformatics. The laser mapping system is now recognized as being a viable system to produce the digital surface model rapidly and efficiently. Indeed the number of its applications and users has grown at a surprising rate in recent years. Interest is now focused on the reconstruction of buildings in urban areas from LiDAR data. Although with present technology objects can be extracted and reconstructed automatically using LiDAR data, the quality issue of the results is still major concern in terms of geometric accuracy. It would be enormously beneficial to the geoinformatics industry if geometrically accurate modeling of topographic surface including man-made objects could be produced automatically. The objectives of this study are to reconstruct buildings using airborne LiDAR data and to evaluate accuracy of the result. In these regards, firstly systematic errors involved with ALS (Airborne Laser Scanning) system are introduced. Secondly, the overall LiDAR data quality was estimated based on the ground check points, then classifying the laser points was performed. In this study, buildings were reconstructed from the classified as building laser point clouds. The most likely planar surfaces were estimated by the least-square method using the laser points classified as being planes. Intersecting lines of the planes were then computed and these were defined as the building boundaries. Finally, quality of the reconstructed building was evaluated.
