To establish the reinforce region and technique through the embankment dike after identifying the region of seawater inflow, we carried out small-loop electromagnetic (EM) survey, electrical resistivity survey and refraction seismic method. We also analyzed the distribution of electrical conductivity in reservoir with depth every two month and monitored water level variations with tidal variation in four observation wells located at seaside and reservoir side in order to analyze the relationship with survey results. From both the cross-correlation between tidal and water level variation at four wells and the distribution of electrical conductivity in reservoir with depth, the major portion of seawater inflow are identified through the embankment dike. From electromagnetic and electrical resistivity survey results, it was found that the seawater inflow were happened through several small regions at seaside and became wider near reservoir side. The 2-D inversion sections of refraction seismic method showed that the pebble-bearing sand layer is spread over the whole region with two to four width. From the this study, small-loop EM, electrical resistivity and refraction seismic surveys accompany with the distribution of electrical conductivity in reservoir with depth and the monitoring results for water level variations are revealed to be effective to identify seawater inflow pathway through embankment dike and to establish the reinforce region and technique through the embankment dike.
In order to find a good seismic source for high-resolution reflection surveys on a tidal flat, characteristic features of several sources were examined through test recording by the walkaway configuration. The sources comprise portable vibrator, 1.2 kg monkey spanner, 4.7 kg sledge hammer, and weight drops with a 30 kg and a 100 kg iron ball, respectively. We analyzed raw and filtered seismic data for the resolution of individual events, then compared various seismic sources to define suitable one for the high-resolution survey in terms of energy level and frequency contents. The study reveals that the portable vibrator is the most suitable source for the detection of and imaging geologic structures less than 20-30 m deep in a tidal flat. We ascribe this to the wide frequency band and high-frequency contents of the portable vibrator. In contrast, the hammer may be an alternative where the target depth increases up to 100 m.
Electrical resistivity surveys were conducted in the areas between Buji-ri and Seoak-dong, and between Nawon-ri and Yangdong-ri, Kyongju in order to investigate the geoelectric structure of the nothren part of the Yangsan Fault. In the area between Buji-ri and Seoak-dong south of Kyongju, the fracture zone east of the inferred fault develops more deeply, without significant north-south variation in depth, than west. In the area between Nawon-ri and Yangdong-ri north of Kyongju, the fault zone seems to be developed along the Hyungsan-river, and the resistivity structure west of the river is more affected by the fracture zone than east. Interpreted section of dipole-dipole survey conducted in Homyung-ri shows vertical contact of the Yangsan Fault. It appears that the boundary between the northern and central segment of the Yangsan Fault is located in the north of study areas since there is no significant variation in electrical resistivity structure near Kyongju.
Geomagnetic field signals have potential for use in underwater navigation and geophysical surveys. To map underwater geomagnetic fields, we propose a method that exploits an autonomous surface vehicle. In our system, a magnetometer is rigidly attached to the vehicle and not towed by a cable, minimizing the system's size and complexity but requiring a dedicated calibration procedure due to magnetic distortion caused by the vehicle. Conventional 2D methods can be employed for the calibration by assuming the horizontal movement of the magnetometer, whereas the proposed 3D approach can correct for horizontal misalignment of the sensor. Our method does not require a supporting crane system to rotate the vehicle, and calibrates and maps simultaneously by exploiting data obtained from field operation. The proposed method has been verified experimentally in inland waters, generating a magnetic field map of the test area that is of much higher resolution than the public magnetic field data.
In early 1990s, the Korean government has launched a deep-sea research program to secure the stable long-term supply of strategic metallic minerals including Cr, Cu and Ni. Through the pioneering surveys, Korea registered $150,000km^2$ of Mn-nodule field in the Clarion-Clipperton area, the NE equatorial Pacific to the international sea-bed authority (ISA) in 1994. Following the ISA exploration code, the final exclusive exploration area of $75,000km^2$ was assigned in 2002, based on results of eight-year researches of chemico-physical properties of nodules, bottom profiles and sediment properties. Since that time, environmental studies, mining technical developments including robot miner and lifting system and establishment of smelting systems were accompanied with the detailed geophysical studies to decipher the priori mining area until 2009. Major points of the recent Korea Mn-nodule program are deployed on a commercial scale until 2015. In order to meet the goals, we developed a 1/5 scaled robot miner compared to commercial one in 2012 and performed a mining test at the water depth of 1,370 m in 2013. In addition, detailed 25,000 scaled mining maps in the priori area, which can provide operation roots of the miner, will be prepared and an environmental-friendly mining strategy will be pursued based on the environmental impact test and environmental monitoring.
Gravity, magnetic and high-resolution seismic surveys were carried out in the Powell Basin to examine tectonic structure and recent sedimentation on Dec. 2002. The trend of negative gravity anomalies along the spreading axis of the Powell Basin changes from northwest to east-west toward south. Both boundaries of the basin with the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Orkey micro-continent show negative magnetic anomalies, which indicates that the boundaries were continental rift areas in the initial stage of spreading. Magnitude of the magnetic anomalies corresponding to the axis of the basin is rather small compared to those of normal spreading axises in other regions. Such small anomalies would be caused by reduction of magnetic strength of oceanic crust below thick sediments due to thermal alternation. High-resolution (3.5 kHz) seismic profiles reveal that top of the South Scotia Ridge is a flat terrain coverd with thin coarse sediments by glacial erosion. Thick oceanic sediments are deposited in the central part of the basin. Little deformation in the oceanic sediments indicates that the Powell
Basin has been in stable tectonic environment after spreading of the basin stopped.
Cement-grouts are injected into limestone cavities beneath the road in the project area, in order to improve strength and reduce permeability; the extent to which grout has penetrated in cavities need to be monitored in order to determined effectiveness of cement-grout. Geophysical approaches, offer great potential for monitoring the grout injection process in a fast and cost-effective way as well as showing whether the grout has successfully achieved the target. This paper presents the ability of surface electrical resistivity to investigate the verification of the grout placement. In order to image the cement-grout, time-lapse surface electrical resistivity surveys were conducted to compare electrical resistivity images before and after injection. Cement-grout was imaged as anomalies exhibiting low resistivity than the surrounding rocks. In accordance with field monitoring, laboratory study was also designed to monitor the resistivity changes of cement-grout specimens with time-lapse. Time-lapse laboratory measurements indicated that electrical methods are good tool to identify the grouted zone. Pre-and post grouting electrical images showed significant changes in subsurface resistivity at grouted zone. The study showed that electrical resistivity imaging technology can be a useful tool for detecting and evaluating changes in subsurface resistivity due to the injection of the grout.

The noise prediction filter using a local/remote reference was developed to obtain a high quality data from seismic surveys over the area where seismic transmission power is limited. The method used in the noise prediction filter is a 3-layer neural network whose algorithm is backpropagation. A NRF (Noise Reduction Factor) value of about 3.0 was obtained with appling training and test data to the trained noise prediction filter. However, the scaling technique generally used for minimizing EM noise from electric and electromagnetic data cannot reduce seismic noise, since the technique can allow only amplitude difference between two time series measured at the primary and reference sites.
A small-loop electromagnetic (EM) system using multiple frequencies has advantages in survey speed and cost despite of limitation on its depth of investigation. Therefore, small-loop EM surveys have been frequently used on various site investigations involving engineering and environmental problems. We have developed a subsurface imaging technique using small loop EM data. We used a one-dimensional (ID) inversion method to reconstruct a subsurface image from frequency EM sounding data. Tests using simulated data show that the method can reasonably recover the subsurface resistivity structure. Also, the method was tested on field data obtained with multiple frequency small loop EM system at a farm in Chunchon, Korea. The resistivity image obtained form field data compares favorably with the image from the dipole-dipole resistivity survey.
The Kyongsang Basin is the most representative Cretaceous basin in the Korean Peninsula where extensive crustal deformation and non-marine sedimentation took place in the early Cretaceous period. The lithology of the basement of the basin and adjacent areas is comprised of mainly Precambrian gneiss complex and Mesozoic granite intrusions. We have carried out magnetotelluric (MT) surveys to investigate the deep geoelectric structure around the Kyongsang Basin. The MT data were collected in the frequency range from 0.00042 to 320 Hz at 24 sites along a profile across the northern part of Kyongsang Basin. The results of MT inversion show that the thickness of sediments is estimated about 3 km to 9 km and the depth to base of granite intrusion is about 20 km. A remarkable discovery in this study is the highly conductive layer beneath the basin, having the resistivity of 1 ohm-m to 30 ohm-m and the thickness of about 3 km to 4 km or more. Although we are not able to reveal the nature of this layer, the result of this study could provide some basic information with respect to the formation process and deposit environment of the proto-Kyongsang Basin.
