We developed a modeling and visualization software that can analyze 3-dimensional spatial information in the ArcView environment. The software constructs and visualizes an object in 3 dimensional space from the input data given a number of horizontal cross-sections. The software can generate and visualize the cross-sections of the object in any azimuth and inclination. Utilizing the program users can modify the 3-D shape of the object by interactively editing the cross-sections.
We developed a modeling and visualization software that can analyze 3-dimensional seismic data. The software divides 3 dimensional space into a series of vertical and horizontal polygons, and allows the various seismic attributes and other spatial information to be stored on these polygons. The program can pick a particular pattern in semi-automatic mode, and store the pattern in the spatial DB. The pattern can be modeled and visualized in 3 dimensional space.
Over the last twenty years, farmers in Western Australia have begun to change land management practices to minimise the effects of salinity to agricultural land. A farm plan is often used as a guide to implement changes. Most plans are based on minimal data and an understanding of only surface water flow. Thus farm plans do not effectively address the processes that lead to land salinisation. A project at Broomehill in the south-west of Western Australia applied an approach using a large suite of geospatial data that measured surface and subsurface characteristics of the regolith. In addition, other data were acquired, such as information about the climate and the agricultural history. Fundamental to the approach was the collection of airborne geophysical data over the study area. This included radiometric data reflecting soils, magnetic data reflecting bedrock geology, and SALTMAP electromagnetic data reflecting regolith thickness and conductivity. When interpreted, these datasets added paddock-scale information of geology and hydrogeology to the other datasets, in order to make on-farm and in-paddock decisions relating directly to the mechanisms driving the salinising process. The location and design of surface-water management structures such as grade banks and seepage interceptor banks was significantly influenced by the information derived from the airborne geophysical data. To evaluate the effectiveness ofthis planning., one whole-farm plan has been monitored by the Department of Agriculture and the farmer since 1996. The implemented plan shows a positive cost-benefit ratio, and the farm is now in the top 5% of farms in its regional productivity benchmarking group. The main influence of the airborne geophysical data on the farm plan was on the location of earthworks and revegetation proposals. There had to be a hydrological or hydrogeological justification, based on the site-specific data, for any infrastructure proposal. This approach reduced the spatial density of proposed works compared to other farm plans not guided by site-specific hydrogeological information.
The aim of this study was to analyze limestone deposits potential using an artificial neural network and a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment to identify areas that have not been subjected to the same degree of exploration. For this, a variety of spatial geological data were compiled, evaluated and integrated to produce a map of potential deposits in the Gangreung area, Korea. A spatial database considering deposit, topographic, geologic, geophysical and geochemical data was constructed for the study area using a GIS. The factors relating to 44 limestone deposits were the geological data, geochemical data and geophysical data. These factors were used with an artificial neural network to analyze mineral potential. Each factor’s weight was determined by the back-propagation training method. Training area was applied to analyze and verify the effect of training. Then the mineral deposit potential indices were calculated using the trained back-propagation weights, and potential map was constructed from GIS data. The mineral potential map was then verified by comparison with the known mineral deposit areas. The verification result gave accuracy of 87.31% for training area.

The Gas Hydrate Research and Development Organization (KGHDO) of Korea accomplished successfully geophysical logging (LWD: Logging While Drilling, MWD: Measurement While Drilling) for five sites in 2007, in order to investigate the presence of gas hydrate in the Ulleung Basin, the East Sea of Korea. The togging parameters acquired from LWD/MWD dre electrical resistivity, acoustic velocity, neutron density and porosity, and natural gamma. In addition, pressure, temperature, and diameter of borehole were measured. LWD/MWD data showed several evidences indicating the presence of gas hydrate. Based on LWD/MWD data, three coring sites were selected for sampling of gas hydrate. Subsequently, various gas hydrate samples were collected directly from three sites. Therefore. the presence of gas hydrates was verified by coring. LWD/MWD data will be significantly used to estimate the amount of gas hydrate. Also, they will provide important information to elucidate about sedimentologic characteristics of gas-hydrate bearing formation and sedimentary environment of the Ulleung Basin.

The development of more advanced geophysical exploration techniques is necessary because the orebodies as yet discovered are increasingly changing in characteristics from shallow/high-grade to deep/low-grade. In this work, laboratory measurement of physical properties of rock samples and a field survey and interpretation of spectral induced polarization (SIP) have been conducted in a skarn metallic deposit, Gagok mine. The purpose of this study is that the applicability of SIP in the exploration of skarn metallic deposits is verified by the comprehensive interpretation between SIP characteristics of rocks obtained from the laboratory measurements and inverted survey results from the field data. In order to understand the SIP characteristics of each lithology, the data of eighty nine rock samples utilized in the previous studies were revaluated. The field survey was carried out using frequency of 0.25 Hz along a survey line designed for intersecting lithological boundaries and evaluating mineralized zones. The mineralized rocks were more conductive (low-resistivity) and capacitive (high-chargeability or strong-phase) than other rocks. Thus, SIP can be one of the very useful tools for the mineral exploration of the skarn deposits.

The techniques using geophysical methods were adopted to obtain quantitative criteria for assessment of grouting effectiveness. Various surface and borehole geophysical surveys including seismic, GPR(ground penetrating radar), resistivity and electromagnetic methods were conducted in fractured rock pilot site before and after grouting execution. However, it is not enough that geophysical data provide criteria for field engineers to confirm the grouting effectiveness in that site even though there is somewhat difference before and after grouting. This study will be continued for the detailed criteria and assessment of grouting effectiveness in other sites.
A new approach of estimating the coefficient of permeability (COP) from resistivity has been developed, which can provide another good application tool of geophysical methods to geo-technical field. Borehole electrical logging and Lugeon test results in Yangsan area showed that resistivity is inversely proportional to the COP. For granite and andesite in Yansan area, the relation between the resistivity ($\rho$) and the COP (k) revealed that, $log(k){\approx}-0.85621\;log({\rho})+0.0031$. Derived relation is applied to AMT data acquired from a survey line along the tunnel. Two-dimensional resistivity distribution from AMT data was converted to two-dimensional COP section. The final COP section can be used as good input data for groundwater modeling.
Resistivity method is a practical and effective geophysical technique to detect leakage zones in embankment dams. Generally, resistivity survey conducted along the crest assumes that the embankment dam has a 2D structure. However, the 3D topography of the embankment distorts significantly resistivity data measured on anywhere of the dam. This study evaluates the influence from 3D effects created by specific dam geometry and effects of water level fluctuations through the 3D finite element modeling technique. Also, a comparison between different locations of survey line are carried out, and topographic correction technique is developed for the resistivity data obtained along the embankment dam. Furthermore, using synthetic resistivity data for an embankment dam model with leakage zone, detectability of leakage zones is estimated through 2.5D inversion.
In magnetotelluric (MT) surveys, small inhomogeneities near the surface cause a static shift in which apparent resistivities shift regardless of frequency. As the static shift in MT data leads to errors in subsurface structure interpretation, many studies have been conducted over the past few decades to mitigate or remove the distortions it caused. The most representative method involves removing static shifts from the data before inversion. Conversely, static shifts can be corrected during inversion or included in the inversion process. In addition, other geophysical data can be used to remove static shifts. However, the correction methods are limited to one-dimensional (1D) static responses, and limitations remain in two- or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) interpretation of distorted MT data owing to static shifts. This study provides a foundation for future studies on static shift by analyzing several previously published methods.
