High-performance concrete, besides aggregate, cement, and water, incorporates supplementary cementitious materials, such as fly ash and blast furnace slag, and chemical admixture, such as superplasticizer. Hence, it is a highly complex material and modeling its behavior represents a difficult task. This paper presents an evolutionary system for the prediction of high performance concrete strength. The proposed framework blends a recently developed version of genetic programming with a local search method. The resulting system enables us to build a model that produces an accurate estimation of the considered parameter. Experimental results show the suitability of the proposed system for the prediction of concrete strength. The proposed method produces a lower error with respect to the state-of-the art technique. The paper provides two contributions: from the point of view of the high performance concrete strength prediction, a system able to outperform existing state-of-the-art techniques is defined; from the machine learning perspective, this case study shows that including a local searcher in the geometric semantic genetic programming system can speed up the convergence of the search process.

This work will provide a design process reference guide for engineers in the field of Solid Rocket Propulsion. Using these proposed design methods, SRM Wagon Wheel grains can be designed for various geometries, their optimal solutions can be found and best possible configuration be attained thereby ensuring finest design in least possible iterations & time. The main focus is to improve computational efficiency at various levels of the design work. These have been achieved by the following way. a. Evaluation of system requirements and design objectives. b. Development of Geometric Model of Wagon Wheel grain configuration. c. Internal ballistic performance predictions. d. Preliminary designing of the Wagon Wheel grain configuration involving various independent geometric variables. e. Optimization of the grain configuration using Sequential Quadratic Programming f. In depth analysis of the optimal results considering affects of various geometric variables on ballistic parameters and analysis of performance prediction outputs have been performed g. Development of software for design and optimization of Wagon Wheel Grain. By using these proposed design methods, SRM Wagon Wheel grains can be designed by using geometric model, their optimal solutions can be found and best possible configuration be attained thereby ensuring finest design.

This paper optimizes the access probabilities (APs) in a network resource allocation scheme based on access probabilities in order that the waiting time and the blocking probability are minimized under the given constraints, and obtains its performance. In order to optimize APs, an infinite number of balance equations is reduced to a finite number of balance equations by applying Neuts matrix geometric method. And the nonlinear programming problem is converted into a linear programming problem. As a numerical example, the performance measures of waiting time and blocking probability for optimal access probabilities and the maximum utilization under the given constraints are obtained. And it is shown that the scheme with optimal APs gives more performance build-up than the strategy without optimization.
Advances in the technology of computational design are giving architects and engineers the opportunity to analyze buildings with complex geometries. This study explores the optimization and automation process using the parametric design method, and uses digital tools to achieve surface representation and panelization for curved shaped office buildings. In this paper, we propose parametric algorithms of dimensional and geometric constraints using the Knowledge-ware scripts embedded in Gehry Technologies' Digital Project. The knowledge-based design methods proposed in this study can be used to systemize the knowledge possessed by experts in the form of data. Such knowledge is required to promote collaboration between designers and engineers in the process of CAD/CAE/CAM. The aim of this study is to integrate the process into design, which establishes an integrated process. This integration enables two-way feedback between design and construction data by combining the methods used in designing, engineering, and construction.

A method of design optimization for minimization of force ripple and maximization of thrust force in a linear brushless permanent magnet motor without finite element analysis is represented. The design optimization method calculated the driving force in the function of electric and geometric parameters of a linear brushless PM motor using the sequential quadratic programming method. Using electric and geometric parameters obtained by this method, the normalized force ripple is reduced 7.7% (9.7% to 2.0%) and the thrust force is increased 12.88N (111.55N to 124.43N) compared to those not using design optimization.

Wire forming machine is widely used in industries to make a variety of wire products such as coil springs and links. Along with the rapid development of CNC technologies, the usage of wire forming machine varies from single-purpose machinery to universal CNC machinery. Rotating the wires while feeding them simultaneously, we can improve the performance of the machines with aspects of efficient tooling and complicated geometric forming. In this study, a new gear train is developed for the control of both feeding and rotating wires independently at the same time. The developed mechanism has many benefits as following, making more complicated geometric and precision products, easier tooling, and simpler programming.
The paper investigates the dynamic behaviour of stiffened panels. The coupled differential equations for eccentric stiffening configuration are first derived. Then a semi-analytical procedure for dynamic analysis of stiffened panels is presented. Unlike finite element or finite strip methods, where the plate is discretized into a set of elements or strips, the plate in this procedure is treated as a single element. The potential energy of the structure is first expressed in terms generalized functions that describe the longitudinal and transverse displacement profiles. The resulting non-linear strain energy functions are then transformed into unconstrained optimization problem in which mathematical programming techniques are employed to determine the magnitude of the lowest natural frequency and the associated mode shape for pre-selected plate/stiffener geometric parameters. The described procedure is verified with other numerical methods for several stiffened panels. Results are then presented showing the variation of the natural frequency with plate/stiffener geometric parameters for various stiffening configurations.

Developed in this research is a surface modeling kernel for various CAD/CAM applications. Its internal surface representations are rational parametric polynomials, which are generalizations of nonrational Bezier, Ferguson, Coons and NURBS surface, and are very fast in evaluation. The kernel is designed under the OOP concepts and coded in C++ on PCs. The present implementation of the kernel supports surface construction methods, such as point data interpolation, skinning, sweeping and blending. It also has NURBS conversion routines and offers the IGES and ZES format for geometric information exchange. It includes some geometric processing routines, such as surface/surface intersection, curve/surface intersection, curve projection and so forth. We are continuing to work with the kernel and eventually develop a B-Rep based solid modeler.
The problem of jointly determining a robust optimal bundle of price and order quantity for a retailer in a single-retailer, single supplier, single-product supply chain is considered. Demand is modeled as a decreasing power function of product price, and unit purchasing cost is modeled as a decreasing power function of order quantity and demand. Parameters defining the two power functions are uncertain but their possible values are characterized by ellipsoids. We extend a previous study in two ways; the purchasing cost function is generalized to take into account the economies of scale realized by higher product demand in addition to larger order quantity, and an exact transformation into an equivalent convex optimization program is developed instead of a geometric programming approximation scheme proposed in the previous study.

The design methodology of injection molding die has been changed from two-dimensional drafting to three-dimensional solid modeling, which is due to many advantages over the conventional methodology in terms of design modification and data associativity. In addition to the solid modeling capability, it is required for a mold designer to utilize a database management system that facilitates efficient mold design. In the paper presented is the implementation of a software program which automatically generates three-dimensional mold-bases including standard parts and slider parts, conforming to given geometric constraints. It is based on a commercial CAD system (Unigraphics NX) along with related API (application program interface) libraries. The research is expected to reduce design efforts and simplify construction of a complex three-dimensional mold-base model that is comprised of standard parts and slider parts, by use of the three-dimensional database and automatized geometric dimensioning.
