This paper presents nonlinear analysis of an arbitrary functionally graded circular plate integrated with two functionally graded piezoelectric layers resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation. Geometric nonlinearity is considered in the strain-displacement relation based on the Von-Karman assumption. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson's ratio can vary continuously along the thickness of the plate based on a power function. Electric potential is assumed as a quadratic function along the thickness direction. After derivation of general nonlinear equations, as an instance, numerical results of a functionally graded material integrated with functionally graded piezoelectric material obeying two different functionalities is investigated. The effect of different parameters such as parameters of foundation, non homogenous index and boundary conditions can be investigated on the mechanical and electrical results of the system. A comprehensive comparison between linear and nonlinear responses of the system presents necessity of this study. Furthermore, the obtained results can be validated by using previous linear and nonlinear analyses after removing the effect of foundation.
This paper investigates the soil effect on seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings by using the spread plastic hinge model which includes material and geometric nonlinearity of the structural members. Therefore, typical reinforced concrete frame buildings are selected and nonlinear dynamic time history analyses and pushover analyses are performed. Three earthquake acceleration records are selected for nonlinear dynamic time history analyses. These records are adjusted to be compatible with the design spectrum defined in Turkish Seismic Code. Interstory drifts and damages of selected buildings are compared according to local soil classes. Also, capacity curves of these buildings are compared with maximum responses obtained from nonlinear dynamic time history analyses. The results show that, soil class influences the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete buildings, significantly.

This paper investigates the pull-in instability of functionally graded poly-SiGe micro-beams under the combined electrostatic and intermolecular forces and temperature change. The exponential distribution model and Voigt model are used to analyze the functionally graded materials (FGMs). Principle of virtual work is used to derive the nonlinear governing differential equation which is then solved using differential quadrature method (DQM). A parametric study is conducted to show the significant effects of material composition, geometric nonlinearity, temperature change and intermolecular Casimir force.
This research tries to present a nonlinear thermo-elastic solution for a functionally graded spherical shell subjected to mechanical and thermal loads. Geometric nonlinearity is considered using the Lagrange or finite strain tensor. Non-homogeneous material properties are considered based on a power function. Adomian's decomposition method is used for calculation of nonlinear results. Nonlinear results such as displacement can be evaluated for sphere in terms of different indexes of non-homogeneity. A comprehensive comparison between linear and nonlinear results and evaluation of the percentage of difference between them can be performed in this paper. The obtained results indicate that the improvement of the results due to usage of nonlinear analysis is depending on the non-homogeneous index.
In the present study, the nonlocal strain gradient theory is used to predict the size-dependent buckling and post-buckling behavior of geometrically imperfect nano-scale piezo-flexomagnetic plate strips in two modes of direct and converse flexomagnetic effects. The first-order shear deformation plate theory is used to analyze analytically nano-strips with simply supported boundary conditions. The nonlinear governing equations of equilibrium and associated boundary conditions are derived using the principle of minimum total potential energy with consideration of the von Kármán-type of geometric nonlinearity. A closed-form solution of governing differential equation is obtained, which is easily usable for engineers and designers. To validate the presented formulations, whenever possible, a comparison with the results found in the open literature is reported for buckling loads. A parametric study is presented to examine the effect of scaling parameters, plate slenderness ratio, temperature, the mid-plane initial rise, flexomagnetic coefficient, different temperature distributions, and magnetic potential, in case of the converse flexomagnetic effect, on buckling and post-buckling loads in detail.
This paper presents a refined finite element formulation for nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of sliding cable structures, overcoming the limitation of the existing approaches that neglect or approximate the friction, pulley dimension, temperature and geometric nonlinearity. A new family of elements with the same framework is proposed, consisting of the cable-pulley (CP) elements considering sliding friction, and the non-sliding cable-pulley (NSCP) elements considering static friction. Thereafter, the complete procedure of static and dynamic analysis using the proposed elements is developed, with the capability of accurately dealing with the friction at each pulley. Several examples are utilized to verify the validity and accuracy of the proposed elements and analysis strategy, and investigate the frictional, thermal and pulley-dimension effects as well. The numerical examples show that the results obtained in this work are in good accordance with the existing works when using the same approximations of friction, pulley dimension and temperature. By avoiding the approximations, the proposed formulation can be effectively adopted in predicting the more precise nonlinear responses of sliding cable structures.
Steel arch supports are used in mines and underground structures to provide stability. Most of the supports are made up of overlapping arches. They can behave either yieldingly or unyieldingly. If the normal force at any point of overlapping equals the slip resistance, the slide occurs. This paper presents a solution procedure for determining the load-carrying capacity of steel arch supports in the yielding implementation. This solution considers the effects of several significant elements, including differing materials and the number of clamps in yielding friction joints. The direct stiffness method is applied. The solution contains geometric, physical, and structural nonlinearity. The results obtained from numerical modeling using the provided procedure are compared to laboratory tests conducted at GIG Katowice in 2012. They show a good correlation with previously collected data from equivalent laboratory conditions.

In this study, a method of nonlinear dynamic analysis of suspension bridges subjected to random wind loads is pre.sented. The nonlinearity considered is the one due to the interaction between the motion of the bridge girder and the tertsion variation of the main cables. The equation of motion is formulated using a continuum approach. The coupling between the vertical and torsional motions are included in the analysis. The equation of motion is solved by using the mode superposition method. The analysis is carried out in the frequency domain utilizing the stochastic linearization technique on to the modal equations. In the linearization procedure, the nonlinear terms are approximated as linear ones with constant terms. The verification of the method has been performed on a case with four modal degrees of freedom. Example analyses are carried out on two suspension bridges for various wind speeds and wind force parameters. Numerical results indicate that, by including the nonlinearity into the analysis, the dynamic responses of the bridges, particularly in the vertical direction, change considerably.
Advanced analysis and optimal design of semi-rigid space steel frames were presented. The advanced analysis can predict the combined nonlinear effects of connection, geometry, and material on the behavior and strength of semi-rigid frames. The Kishi-Chen power model was used to describe the nonlinear behavior of semi-rigid connections. Geometric nonlinearity was determined using stability functions. Material nonlinearity was determined using the Column Research Council (CRC) tangent modulus and the parabolic function. The direct search method proposed by Choi and Kim was used as optimization technique. One by one, the member with the largest unit value evaluated using the LRFD interaction equation were placed adjacent to a larger member selected from the database. The objective function was assumed to be the weight of steel frame, while the constraint functions were load-carrying capacities, deflections, inter-story drifts, and the ductility requirements. The member sizes determined using the proposed method were compared to those derived from the conventional LRFD method.
This paper presents practical notional-load plastic-hinge method for a two-dimensional steel structure design. The proposed method incorporates the refined plastic-hinge concept for spread of plasticity together with a practical notional-load approach. The proposed method can assess realistically both strength and behavior of a structural system and its individual members in a direct manner. As a result, the method can be used for design without tedious separate member capacity checks, including the calculation of K-factor. The strengths predicted by the proposed method are then compared with those predicted by the exact plastic-zone analysis as well as by the conventional LRFD procedure. A good agreement is generally observed. The displacement predictions are compared with the plastic-zone solutions. Analysis and design guidelines in using the proporsed method are given in detail. Analysis and design procedures are recommended. Member sizes determined by the proposed method are compared with those determined by the LRFD method. It is concluded that the procedures are suitable for adoption in practice.
