  • In the estuary of Nagdong River thick marine sediments were deposited by the Holocene marine transgression. The sediments largely consist of silty clay, which is called Pusan clays in the geotechnical field. This paper presents engineering geological characteristics of Pusan clays in Beombangdong area. Overall geological environmental changes based on several geological properties are discussed and synthesized as Geological Environmental Zones. And also, engineering properties of the clays in laboratory and field are discussed and synthesized as Engineering Zones. Two zones are correlated and engineering characteristics are evaluated in view of engineering geology.

  • To develop site characterization technologies for a radioactive waste disposal research in KAERI, the geological and hydrogeological investigations have been carried out since 1997. In 2006, the KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) was constructed to study a solute migration, a microbiology and an engineered barrier system as well as deeply to understand geological environments in in-situ condition. This study is performed as one of the site characterization works around KURT. Several investigations such as a lineament analysis, a borehole/tunnel survey, a geophyscial survey and logging in borehole, were used to construct the geological model. As a result, the geological model is constructed, which includes the lithological model and geo-structural model in this study. Moreover, from the results of the in-situ hydraulic tests, the hydrogeological properties of elements in geological model were evaluated.

  • Laboratory testing of representative rock specimens is of fundamental necessity for the successful design and/or assessment of facilities associated with many kinds of underground exploitation, including the geological disposal of radioactive nuclear waste. As a fundamental and systematic study, a series of measurements of the physical, mechanical and hydraulic properties of Inada granite and Shirahama sandstone, two rock types that are widely available in Japan, have been performed. This paper presents the results of a study of the effective porosity, density, compressive and shear wave velocity, unconfined compressive strength and permeability of the two rocks. The anisotropy and the effects of confining pressure on the permeability of the rocks, as well as the relationships among the physical, mechanical and hydraulic properties, are also investigated and discussed.

  • Investigating the physical and chemical properties of riverine wetlands is necessary to understand their distribution characteristics and depositional environment. This study investigated the physical (particle size, color, and type) and chemical properties (organic, inorganic, and moisture contents) of sediments in Samrak wetland, located in the Nakdong River estuary area in Busan, South Korea. The particle size analysis indicated that the hydraulic conductivity values for the coarse grain and the mixture of coarse and fine grains ranged from 2.03 to 3.49×10-1 cm s-1 and 7.18×10-3 to 1.24×10-7 cm s-1, respectively. In-situ water quality and laboratory-based chemical analyses and radon-222 measurement were performed on groundwater and surface water in the wetland and water from the nearby Nakdong River. The physical and chemical properties of Samrak wetland was characterized by the sediments in the vertical and lateral direction. The concentrations of chemical components in the wetland groundwater were distinctly higher than those in the Nakdong River water though the wetland groundwater and Nakdong River water equally belonged to the Ca-HCO3 type.

  • In this study we experiment on sand deposits (tine aggregates) taken from the old river-bed of the Bonghwang-cheon of Geum River Basin, and evaluate physical properties of fine aggregates in comparison to the KS quality regulation. As a result of experimentation, particle size of fine aggregates is generally smaller in the downstream area than in the upstream area. In addition, physical properties of the fine aggregates tend to depend on the bedrock type. Physical properties of fine aggregates show a strong positive correlation with particle size of old river-bed sediments. Finally, the general physical properties of fine aggregates are conformable to the KS quality regulation, except density and proportion of materials finer than $75{\mu}m$.

  • The investigation of the disc cutter wear prediction has an important guiding role in TBM equipment selection, project planning, and cost forecasting, especially when tunneling in a long-distance rock formations with high strength and high abrasivity. In this study, a comprehensive database of disc cutter wear data, geological properties, and tunneling parameters is obtained from a 1326 m excavated metro tunnel project in leptynite in Shenzhen, China. The failure forms and wear consumption of disc cutters on site are analyzed with emphasis. The results showed that 81% of disc cutters fail due to uniform wear, and other cutters are replaced owing to abnormal wear, especially flat wear of the cutter rings. In addition, it is found that there is a reasonable direct proportional relationship between the uniform wear rate (WR) and the installation radius (R), and the coefficient depends on geological characteristics and tunneling parameters. Thus, a preliminary prediction formula of the uniform wear rate, based on the installation radius of the cutterhead, was established. The correlation between some important geological properties (KV and UCS) along with some tunneling parameters (Fn and p) and wear rate was discussed using regression analysis methods, and several prediction models for uniform wear rate were developed. Compared with a single variable, the multivariable model shows better prediction ability, and 89% of WR can be accurately estimated. The prediction model has reliability and provides a practical tool for wear prediction of disc cutter under similar hard rock projects with similar geological conditions.

  • Coupled thermo-hydraulic-mechanical (THM) processes are essential for the long-term performance of deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. In this study, a numerical sensitivity analysis was performed to analyze the effect of rock properties on THM responses after the execution of the heater test at the Kamaishi mine in Japan. The TOUGH-FLAC simulator was applied for the numerical simulation assuming a continuum model for coupled THM analysis. The rock properties included in the sensitivity study were the Young's modulus, permeability, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion coefficients of crystalline rock, rock salt, and clay. The responses, i.e., temperature, water content, displacement, and stress, were measured at monitoring points in the buffer and near-field rock mass during the simulations. The thermal conductivity had an overarching impact on THM responses. The influence of Young's modulus was evident in the mechanical behavior, whereas that of permeability was noticed through the change in the temperature and water content. The difference in the THM responses of the three rock type models implies the importance of the appropriate characterization of rock mass properties with regard to the performance assessment of the deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste.

  • Most of the landslides triggered by intensive rainfall on natural slope occur serious damages of human beings and properties. There have been many landslides since 1991 in Gyeonggi province. The influential factors are rainfall, topography, geology and soil properties. There were 660 landslides occurred by intensive rainfall as much as 250mm at Yongin and Anseong area from Tuly 19th to luly 21st,1991 This study surveyed location, topography, geology, geometry of the landslide and rainfall at the area and analyzed occurrence characteristics of the landslides. Most of the landslides occurred on the soil layer above the bed rock. They showed changes of landslide types from translational slides at the head part to flow at the central part. The landslides have relatively small magnitude of which length is shorter than 50m. In order to identify characteristics of landslides dependent on soil conditions, geotechnical properties of soil were evaluated by laboratory tests using soil samples which were collected on slided area and not-slided area. Soil properties of the slided area show high percentage of coarse material such as gravel and sand. However, soil of the not-slided area is mainly composed of fine material such as silt and clay. Permeability coefficients of the slided area are higher than those of the not-slided area.

  • Usually, cut-slope is the term that call rock slope. Therefore, the cause of instability of cut-slope is influenced generally in lithological and structure geological qualities including weathering disintegration. Through the several case studies, we could confirm that stabilization countermeasure also should be based in geological properties.

  • A lot of landslides were occurred in Gangnung, Macheon and Geochang areas by Typhoons such as RUSA(2002) and MEAMI(2003). Soil properties of these areas are investigated regarding geological conditions in this study. The shallow plane failure were occurred in Gangnung and Geochang areas, whereas the deep circle failure were occurred in Macheon area. The matrix in Gangnung and Geochang areas was composed of Granite, and the matrix in Macheon area was composed of Gabbro. The disturbed and undisturbed soils were sampled in these areas. As the results of laboratory tests using sampled soils, the coefficient of permeability in Granite region is lower than that in Gabbro region. In the cases that the silt and clay contents are included less than 4% for the soils of Granite region and less than 7% for the soils of Gabbro region, the coefficients of permeability are rapidly increased for both soils. In addition, the simple equations for predicting the coefficients of permeability are proposed using the effective particle size and the silt and clay contents according to geological condition.
