To investigate the inhibition effect on pathogenic microbes and the antimicrobial resistance of probiotics, a total of 140 probiotics were isolated from 35 kinds of Korean commercially available Kimchi. Of those, L. plantarum was identified from 53 strains (37.9%), E. faecium from 27 strains (19.3%), and L. rhamnosus from 7 strains (5.0%) using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Sixty nine strains (49.3%) showed overall antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microbes, namely S. Typhi, S. Enteritidis, E. coli O157:H7, S. flexneri, NAG Vibrio, Listeria monocytogenesis, Y. enterocolitica, S. aureus, S. pyogenes, G. vaginalis, C. albicans, and P. acne. The proportions of L. plantarum, E. faecium, and L. rhamnosus strains to pathogenic microbes were 75.5%, 40.7%, and 28.6%, respectively. In addition, a resistance test with 18 antimicrobial agents using a disk diffusion assay revealed a resistance incidence of 98.6% for nalidixic acid, 83.6% for streptomycin, 75.7% for gentamicin 73.6% for vancomycin, 72.1% for norfloxacin, and 67.9% for ciprofloxacin. In conclusion, L. plantarum, L. sakei, and E. faecium strains with various antimicrobial activities and broad antibiotic resistance are useful for treating diarrhea in long-term inpatients and for the alternative use for treating Candida species female vaginitis.
Microorganisms were isolated and identified from bovine 296 quarters which showed positive reaction by California Mastitis Test (CMT) in 40 farms of Jeju from September 1999 to June 2000. The organisms associated with the mastitis of bovine were 11 different bacterial species in this study. Which of them, Staphylococcus aureus was the most predominant species as 152 (51.4%) isolates. Other identified species included 49 (16.5%) coliform, 47 (15.8%) Streptococcus dysgalactiae, 15 (5.1%) Bacillus spp., 8 (2.7%) Staphylococcus epidermidis, 6 (2.1%) Streptococcus agalactiae, 5 (1.7%) Enterococcus faecalis, 5 (1.7%) Corynebacterium spp., 3 (1.0%) Streptococcus uberis, 1 (0.3%) Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 1 (0.3%) Pasteurella haemolytica. Almost of all the islolated beacterial species showed high sensitivity against kanamycin (98.6%), cephalothin (98.0%), streptomycin (94.9%), gentamicin (94.6%), ampicillin (92.2%) and polymyxin B (90.2%). On the contrary, they showed resistance against penicillin (47.0%), tetracycline (37.2%), cefazolin (26.0%), bacitracin (22.6%) and erythromycin (19.9%). Eighty-one isolates were not resistant to any antibiotics and 215 drug resistant isolates showed 89 different drug resistance patterns from single to nine multiple antibiotics resistance patterns.

One hundred and forty strains of Shigella cultures isolated from the twelve hygiene laboratories of cities and provincial level and general hospital laboratories in 1983, and were tested for their resistance to 13 antimicrobial drugs and their R-Plasmid transfer. One hundred and forty (100%) of isolates were susceptible to amikacin, gentamicin, tobramycin, a total of 94.3% of all shigella isolates were resistant to 1 or more of the 13 antimicrobial agents tested. The most commonly found resistance was to chloramphenicol (94%), followed by streptomycin (93%), tetracycline (92%), piperacillin (90%), ampicillin (83%), cefoperazone (42%), nalidixic acid (14%), cephalothin (17%), rifampicin (22%), and kanamycin (6%). Sixty percent of strains among 140 were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, tetracycline at same time. The transfer of drug resistance by conjugation was tested and 94 strains (94.3%) which were resistant to one or more drugs were found to transfer their drug resistance to E. coli.
Ceftizoxime sodium is a new synthetic ${\beta}$-lactam antibiotic combining potent antibacterial activity with high stability to a wide range of bacterial ${\beta}$-lactamase. This experiment was achieved to evaluate the antibacterial activities of ceftizoxime sodium againist Gram negative enteric bacteria isolated from in outpatient visiting Yeungnam university hospital and to study the emergence of drug induced bacterial varients which resist to ceftizoxime in vitro. The antibacterial activity of the ceftizoxime was compared with that of antibiotics and its effect on population of normal intestinal flora in mice was observed. The results are summarized as follows : 1. Highly effective antibacterial activity of ceftizoxime against Gram negative enteric bacilli was demonstrated and this antibacterial activity was superior to that of ampicillin. 2. Several test strains shows multiple antibiotic resistence. Among 15 strains of Escherichia coli, 1 strain was resistent to ampicillin, cefadroxyl, gentamicin, tetracycline, and 2 strains were resistent to ampicillin, cefadroxyl, tetracycline, five strains of Escherichia coli and Enterobacter cloacae was resistent to amplicillin, tetracycline and Shigella dysenteria was resistent to ampicillin, gentamicin, tetracycline. 3. The frequency of in vitro emergence of resistent varients among ceftizoxime sensitive bacteria in the presence of increasing concentrations of the compound was found to be low. 4. Plasmid was isolated in 6 of 9 strains (6 strains of Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, Enterobacter cloaceae and Salmonella typhi) That showed different antibiotic resistance. They were 5 strains of Escherichia coli and 1 strain of Shigella dysenteriae. However, plasmid could not be considered as a hallmark for antibiotic resistance by this. Further studies with curing experiment are to be accomplished for this purpose. 5. Changes in the bacterial count of normal intestinal flora following 25mg/kg/day administration of ceftizoxime over S consecutive days were not significant. In conclusion, ceftizoxime appeared to be a drug of choice in the treatment of Gram negative enteric bacilli infection.
Many strains of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from pus samples from primary, secondary, and tertiary medical institutions and were subjected to an antibiotic sensitivity test. Ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, erythromycin, gentamicin, oxacillin penicillin, tetracycline, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, vancomycin and teicoplanin were used for the antibiotic sensitivity test. The strains showed hightest resistance to penicillin(91%), but all of strains tested were susceptible to vancomycin and teicoplanin. The isolated multi-drug(penicillin-tetracycline-ciprofloxacin-clindamycin-erythromycin- oxacillin-gentamicin) resistant S. aureus were analyzed genotypically using an AP-PCR(Arbitrarily Primed polymerase chain reaction) with an arbitrary 3 primers. Based on the result for genotype analysis, the genotypes identified by S1 primer did not coincide with those of S2 or E2 primers. Genotypes identified by S2 primer did not coincide with those of S1 or E2 primers. Also genotypes identified by the E2 primer did not coincide with those of S1 or S2 primers. Therefore, an analysis of AP-PCR test with multiple primers will provide more sensitive identification. A strain from a secondary medical institution and a strain from a tertiary medical institution which showed the same genotype for S1, S2, and E2 primers are required for further epidemiological study.
During the period from August through October, 1988, 50 isolates of Edwardsiella tarda were isolated from 6 diseased cultured Channa argus in Dunchi island and Myung-ghi, near Pusan in Korea were examined by studying their biochemical and antibiotical reactions. The ill animals moved slowly and irregular-formed swimming at the surface of the corner. The symthoms were necrosis with hemorrhage on the body surface, head, gill region, and mouth. Some fish were observed dropsy of the belly. The bacteria grew slowly on Double Salmonella-Shigella agar, 24h, at $37^{\circ}C$ to form relatively small size (2mm diameter), smoothed and convexed form with transient or black in center of the colonis. They gave negative reactions to Voges-Proskauer, Simmon's citrate, urea, KCN (in growth), gelatin, arginine dehydrolase, phenylalanine deaminase and many sugars. The isolates showed positive reactions to $H_2S$ (in KIA agar), indol, Methyl-Red, motility, lysine and ornithine decarboxylase, and gas from glucose. 8 drugs tested as chloramphenicol, colistin, gentamicin, kanamycin, lincomycin, nalidixic acid spectinomycin, and tetracycline. All cultures were resistant to colistin, lincomycin and spectinomycin respectibly, but sensitive to kanamycin and nalidixic acid. Three strains showed resistance to chloramphenicol and 2 isolates among them were resistant to two drugs(gentamicin and tetracycline), coincidentally.
Bacillus licheniformis strain 0DA23-1, a potential fermentation starter candidate, was isolated from doenjang, a Korean high-salt-fermented soybean food. Strain 0DA23-1 contains a single circular 4,405,373-bp chromosome with a G + C content of 45.96%. The complete genome of strain 0DA23-1 does not include any of the virulence factors found in the well-known pathogens Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, no genes associated with resistance to eight antibiotics (chloramphenicol, clindamycin, erythromycin, gentamicin, kanamycin, streptomycin, tetracycline, and vancomycin), hemolysis, or biofilm formation were identified.

Shigella is one of the most prevalent pathogens for the diarrhoeal diseases in the developing countries. One hundered and six strains of shigella were isolated from January 1980 to August 1981 at the dept. of clinical pathology, Han Yang Medical Center. Subgroups of these strains were identified as one strain of S. dysenteriae, 98 strains of S. flexneri and 7 strains of S. sonnei. None of S. boydii was observed. Sex ratio, male to female was 48 to 58. Age distribution disclosed 6 cases under one year, 11 cases one to under 2 years and 21 cases(19.8%) two to under 3 years. Subtotal of 0 to 9 years showed 64 cases(60.4%). Susceptibility for antibiotics of these strains revealed dibekacin 100%, sisomicin 100%, amikacin 98.1%, cefazolin 97.2%, tobramycin 97.1%, gentamicin 95.2%, colistin 93.0%, minocycline 89.6%, kanamycin 83.0%, carbenicillin 18.9%, streptomycin 18.9%, tmp-smz 8.6%, ampicillin 2.8% and chloramphenicol 1.9%. Patterns of resistance to sulfa, streptomycin, chloramphenical and tetracycline have already started at the early part of 1960 decade. Although ampicillin was highly sensitive to shigella at the end of 1960 to the early part of 1970 decade, this study has disclosed high resistance to the strains. New antibiotics such as amikacin, cefazolin, dibekacin, gentamicin, and tobramycin have revealed highly sensitive to these strains, however, multiresistance for those antibiotics will be shown to be prevalent in this country within several years, where it is probably related to the unrestricted sale and use of antibiotics in man.
In order to control resistant strains and to properly select the antimicrobial agents, it is of quite importance to know current trends of bacterial species and changing patterns of antimicrobial resistance rates. The authors studied the results of 542 Gram-positive strains among 1,689 strains isolated at Chung-buk National University Hospital in 1996. The frequently isolated Gram-positive microorganisms were Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterococcus faecalis in descending order. S. aureus showed high resistance to penicillin, gentamicin, and susceptibility to teicoplanin and vancomycin. Coagulase negative Staphylococcus was highly resistant to all of the antibiotics used in this experiment except teicoplanin and vancomycin. Enterococcus were highly resistant to vancomycin, penicillin and tetracycline. MIC of Gram-positive oaganisms was appeared to be zig-zag pattern.

The extensive distribution of multidrug-resistant (MDR) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses a threat to healthcare worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the MDR and molecular patterns of MRSA isolates in children admitted to the two biggest tertiary care pediatric hospitals in northern and southern Vietnam. A total of 168 MRSA strains were collected to determine antibiotic susceptibility by minimum inhibitory concentration tests. Antibiotic-resistant genes, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing, and multilocus sequence typing were used for the molecular characterization of MRSA. Among the total strains, the MDR rate (51.8%) was significantly higher in the northern hospital than in the southern hospital (73% vs. 39%, p < 0.0001). The MDR-MRSA with the highest rates were "ciprofloxacin-erythromycin-gentamicintetracyclines" (35.6%), followed by "erythromycin-tetracycline-chloramphenicol" (24.1%), and "ciprofloxacin-erythromycin-gentamicin" (19.5%), showing an accumulative total of 79.3%. The most susceptible antibiotics were rifampicin (100%) and vancomycin (100%), followed by doxycycline (94.0%), meropenem (78.0%), and cefotaxime (75.0%). The SCCmecII strains showed greater resistance to gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, meropenem and cephalosporins compared with the other strains. The SCCmecII strains exhibited the highest rate in the tested genes (aacA/aphD: 55.2%, ermA/B/C: 89.7%, and tetK/M: 82.8%). ST5-SCCmecII was the predominant clone in the northern hospital, whereas SCCmecIVa was more pronounced in the southern hospital. In conclusion, our results raised concerns about the predominant MDR-MRSA strains in the pediatric hospitals in Vietnam. The north-south difference in the antibiotic resistance patterns and genetic structure of MRSA suggests different MRSA origins and various uses of antimicrobial agents between the two regions.
