Finding the optimal solution in the river water quality management system is very hard with the non-linearity of the water quality model. Many suggested methods for that using the linear programming, non-linear programming and dynamic programming, are failed to give an optimal solution of sufficient accuracy and satisfaction. We studied a method to find a solution optimizing the river water quality management in the aspect of the efficiency and the cost of the waste water treatment facilities satisfying the water Quality goals. In the suggested method, we use the QUAL2E water quality model and the genetic algorithm. A brief result of the project to optimize the water quality management in the Youngsan river is presented.

In this study, a hybrid search algorithm combining genetic programming with orthogonal least squares (GP/OLS) is utilized to generate prediction models for compressive strength of high performance concrete (HPC) mixes. The GP/OLS models are developed based on a comprehensive database containing 1133 experimental test results obtained from previously published papers. A multiple least squares regression (LSR) analysis is performed to benchmark the GP/OLS models. A subsequent parametric study is carried out to verify the validity of the models. The results indicate that the proposed models are effectively capable of evaluating the compressive strength of HPC mixes. The derived formulas are very simple, straightforward and provide an analysis tool accessible to practicing engineers.
This paper deals with smooth curve fitting of data corrupt by noise. Most research efforts have been concentrated on employing the smoothness penalty function with the estimation of its optimal parameter in order to avoid the 'overfilling and underfitting' dilemma in noisy data fitting problems. Our approach, called DBSF(Differentiation-Based Smooth Fitting), is different from the above-mentioned method. The main idea is that optimal functions approximately estimating the derivative of noisy curve data are generated first using genetic programming, and then their integral values are evaluated and used to recover the original curve form. To show the effectiveness of this approach, DBSP is demonstrated by presenting two illustrative examples and the application of estimating the principal dimensions of bulk cargo ships in the conceptual design stage.
As development of information technology, companies stress the need of knowledge management. Companies construct ERP system including knowledge management. But, it is not easy to formalize knowledge in organization. They experience that constructing information system help knowledge management. Now, we focus on engineering knowledge. Because engineering data contains experts' experience and know-how in its own, engineering knowledge is a treasure house of knowledge. Korean shipyards are leader of world shipbuilding industry. They have accumulated a store of knowledges and data. But, they don't have data minning tool to utilize accumulated data. This paper treats development of data minning tools for the utilization of shipbuilding knowledge based on genetic programming (GP).
This paper introduces a GP(Genetic Programming) based robust technique for temperature compensation in short-range prediction. Development of an efficient MOS(Model Output Statistics) is necessary to correct systematic errors of the model, because forecast models do not reliably determine weather conditions. Most of MOS use a linear regression to compensate a prediction model, therefore it is hard to manage an irregular nature of prediction. In order to solve the problem, a nonlinear and symbolic regression method using GP is suggested. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of the estimation by a GP based nonlinear MOS for 3 days temperatures in Korean regions. This method is then compared to the UM model and has shown superior results. The training period of 2007-2009 summer is used, and the data of 2010 summer is adopted for verification.
This paper introduces the planar storage location assignment problem (PSLAP) that no research has attempted to mathematically solve. The PSLAP can be defined as the assignment of the inbound and outbound objects to the storage yard with aim of minimizing the number of obstructive object moves. The storage yard allows only planar moves of objects. The PSLAP usually occurs in the assembly block stockyard operations at a shipyard. This paper formulates the PSLAP using a mathematical programming model, but which belongs to the NP-hard problems category. Thus this paper utilizes an efficient genetic algorithm (GA) to solve the PSLAP for real-sized instances. The performance of the proposed mathematical programming model and developed GA is verified by a number of numerical experiments.
We have been developing a method to build one-step-ahead prediction models for time series using genetic programming (GP). Our model building method consists of two stages. In the first stage, functional forms of the models are inherited from their parent models through crossover operation of GP. In the second stage, the parameters of the newborn model arc optimized based on an iterative method just like the back propagation. The proposed method has been applied to various kinds of time series problems. An application to the seismic ground motion was presented in the KACC'99, and since then the method has been improved in many aspects, for example, additions of new node functions, improvements of the node functions, and new exploitations of many kinds of mutation operators. The new ideas and trials enhance the ability to generate effective and complicated models and reduce CPU time. Today, we will present a couple of financial applications, espc:cially focusing on gold price prediction in Tokyo market.

There are many methods to find solutions for Integer Programming problems (IPs) such as the Branch-Bound philosophy or the Cutting Plane algorithm. However, most of them have a problem that is the explosion of sets in the computing process. In addition, GA is known as a heuristic search algorithm for solutions of optimization problems. It is started from a random initial guess solution and attempting to find one that is the best under some criteria and conditions. The paper will study an artificial intelligent method to solve IPs by using Genetic Algorithms (GAs). The original solution of this was presented in the papers of Fabricio Olivetti de Francaand and Kimmo Nieminen [2003]. However, both have several limitations which causes could be operations in GAs. The paper proposes a method to upgrade these operations and computational results are also shown to support these upgrades.
This paper introduces design method for air pump system using bond graph and genetic programming to maximize outflow subject to a constraint specifying maximum power consumption. The air pump system is a mixed domain system which includes electromagnetic, mechanical and pneumatic elements. Therefore an appropriate approach for a better system for synthesis is required. Bond graphs are domain independent, allow free composition, and are efficient for classification and analysis of models. Genetic programming is well recognized as a powerful tool for open-ended search. The combination of these two powerful methods, BG/GP, was tested for redesign of air pump system.
