  • This study compared the characteristics of scientific emoticons made by general and science-gifted elementary students. To do this, fifth graders (n=53) at a general elementary school in Gyeonggi province and fifth graders (n=35) at a gifted science education institute in Seoul were selected. Scientific emoticons written by the students were compared according to the number and types. Analysis of the results reveal that the science-gifted students made more scientific emoticons than the general students for thirty minutes. In the comparison of the types of scientific emoticons, there were some similarities and significant differences between general students and science-gifted students. Overall, however, it was found that science-gifted students made more various types of scientific emoticons than general students in 'form' aspects (e.g., generative form of text, descriptive form of text, and expressive form of image) and 'information' aspects (e.g., emotion, construction level, excess of curriculum level, scientific disciplines, and use of scientific knowledge) of the texts and the images in the scientific emoticons. The scientific emoticons made by general and science-gifted elementary students included very few misconceptions. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • This study investigated and compared orientations toward scientific inquiry learning among general and science-gifted elementary students. It also investigated and compared the relationship between their orientations toward scientific inquiry learning and their coping strategies for anomalous situations. To realize this, 61 general elementary students and 53 science-gifted elementary students in Seoul were selected, and questionnaires were administered to investigate their orientations toward scientific inquiry learning and coping strategies for anomalous situations. In addition, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted individually with some of the general and science-gifted students. The results showed that among orientations toward scientific inquiry learning, regardless of grade level, the general students were most likely to possess 'concept understanding' and second most likely to exhibit 'scientific practice'. On the other hand, the science-gifted students demonstrated the highest frequency of 'scientific practice', with 'concept understanding' and 'complexity' also being relatively common. 'Activity driven' was found only among some of the general students and 'engineering practice' was found only among some of the science-gifted students. 'Process skills' were not found. No clear relationships between orientations toward scientific inquiry learning and coping strategies for anomalous situations were found. However, some differences in the choice of coping strategies for anomalous situations between the general and science-gifted students were discovered, even when they had the same orientations toward scientific inquiry learning. The educational implications of these findings were discussed.

  • The objective of this paper is to provide an improved reorder decision policy for general multi-echelon distribution systems utilizing the shared stock information. It has been known that traditional reorder policies sometimes show poor performance in distribution systems. Thus, in our previous research we introduced the order risk policy which utilizes the shared stock information more accurately for the 2-echelon distribution system and proved the optimality. However, since the real world supply chain is generally composed with more than 2 echelons, we extend the order risk policy for the general multi-echelon systems. Since the calculation of the exact order risk value for general multi-echelon systems is very complex, we provide two approximation methods for the real-time calculation. Through the computational experiment comparing the order risk policy with the existing policies under various conditions, we show the performance of the order risk policy and analyze the value of the shared stock information varying with the characteristics of the supply chain.

  • In this paper, we investigated the propagation of thermoelastic surface waves in fibre-reinforced anisotropic general viscoelastic media of higher order of nth order including time rate of strain under the influence of rotation. The general surface wave speed is derived to study the effectsof rotation andthermal onsurface waves. Particular cases for Stoneley, Love and Rayleighwaves are discussed. The results obtained in this investigation are more general in the sense that some earlier published results are obtained from our result as special cases. Our results for viscoelastic of order zero are well agreed to fibre-reinforced materials. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of rotation and parameters for fibre-reinforced of the material medium. It is also observed that, surface waves cannot propagate in a fast rotating medium.Numerical results for particular materials are given and illustrated graphically. The results indicate that the effect of rotation on fibre-reinforced anisotropic general viscoelastic media are very pronounced.

  • In this paper, we introduce and study a new class of system of parametric general quasivariational-like inequalities. Using $\eta$-subdifferential and $\eta$-proximal mappings of proper functionals in Hilbert spaces, we prove the equivalence between the system of parametric general quasivariational-like inequalities and a xed point problem and construct two iterative algorithms. A few existence and uniqueness results as well as the sensitivity analysis of solutions are also established for the system of parametric general quasivariational-like inequalities, and some convergence results of iterative sequence generated by the algorithms are proved. Our results extend a few known results in the literature.

  • Organized hematoma of maxillary sinus is a rare pathologically benign mass in which pressure in the hematoma increases as it undergoes a process of organization, causing the deformation of the surrounding tissue, mimicking malignancies. The midfacial degloving approach can be used when extensive exposure is required in the treatment of lesions or traumas in the midfacial area with intranasal and intraoral incisions. We report a surgical excision case of organized hematoma of maxillary sinus using midfacial degloving approach without major complications and recurrence after one-year follow up.

  • This paper extends the results of Ellis and Rosen (1982 a) to some more general integrals and applies our main theorem to compute the specific free energy of some models in statistical mechanics. The general integrals of this paper mean the integrals with respect to the probability measures induced by the sample mean of n i.i.d. random variables taking values in a separable Banach space.

  • Recently a new concept of shadow prices, called average shadow price, has been developed. This paper provides a dual problem and the corresponding duality theorems justifying this new shadow price. The general duality framework is used. As an important secondary result, a new reduced class of price function, the pp. h.-class, has been developed for the general duality theory. This should be distinguished from other known reductions achieved in some specific areas of mathematical programming, in that it sustains the strong duality property in all the mathematical programs. The new general dual problem suggested with this pp. h.-class provides, as an optimal solution, the average shadow prices.

  • I study optimal consumption and investment choices of an infinitely-lived economic agent with a general time-separable von Neumann-Morgenstern utility under general borrowing constraints against future labor income. An explicit solution is provided by the dynamic programming method. It is shown that the optimal consumption and risky investment decrease as the borrowing constraints become stronger.
