Epidemiologic studies of Kawasaki disease (KD) have shown a new pattern or change of its occurrence suggestive of its pathophysiology or risk factors from the first patient with KD reported in 1961. The incidence of KD in Northeast Asian countries including Japan, South Korea, China, and Taiwan is 10-30 times higher than that in the United States and Europe. Knowing the true epidemiology of KD in each country and the availability of publications of KD epidemiology also could benefit general health care providers and general population. This would enable the early detection and treatment of KD, ultimately reducing the incidence of coronary artery complications and mortality. Therefore, efforts to investigate the true epidemiology of KD should be continued in every country using a questionnaire survey, National Health Insurance system data, or combined methods depending on each country's medical environment to ensure high-quality care of patients with KD.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a hereditary disease that is also strongly dependent on environmental factors, lifestyles, and dietary habits. This study explored the relationship between lifestyle habits and glycosylated hemoglobin management in T2DM patients to provide empirical outcomes to improve T2DM management and patient health literacy. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study enrolled 349 diabetic patients with more than 5 care visits to a Diabetes Mellitus care network under the Health Management Plan led by Taiwan Department of Health (DOH). Based on relevant literature, an Outpatient Record Form of Diabetes Mellitus Care was designed and lipid profile tests were conducted for data collection and analysis. RESULTS: When modeling the data, the results showed that the odds for HbA1c > 7.5% in T2DM patients duration over 10 years was 3.785 (P = 0.002) times that in patients with disease duration of fewer than 3 years. The odds of HbA1c > 7.5% in illiterate patients was 3.128 (P = 0.039) times that in patients with senior high school education or above. The odds of HbA1c > 7.5% in patients with other chronic illness was 2.207 (P = 0.019) times that in participants without chronic illness. Among 5 beneficial lifestyle habits, the odds of HbA1c > 7.5% in patients with 2 or 3 good habits were 3.243 (P = 0.003) and 3.424 (P = 0.001) times that in patients with more than 3 good habits, respectively. CONCLUSION: This empirical outcome shows that maintaining a good lifestyle improves T2DM management and patients' knowledge, motivation, and ability to use health information. Patients with longer disease duration, education, or good lifestyle habits had optimal HbA1c management than those in patients who did not. Thus, effective selfmanagement and precaution in daily life and improved health literacy of diabetic patients are necessary to increase the quality of T2DM care.
This study was conducted from reviews of school health and sample surveys of school nurses, physical special education teachers and principals for the development of school health education with specia, regard to health promotion. The results are as follows : First the school health program should be reorganized to develop a school health education curriculum and to promote health in general. Second, We must develop a health education textbook for primary and secondary schools. Third, this health education textbook must be taught by school nurses in regular courses. Fourth, a teacher's health promotion program must be developed and operated by school nurses and teachers for the support of this school health education curriculum.
This study was the research of health promoting behavior of the 6th grade students of elementary school and general characteristics, health related characteristics and health promoting behavior following the health education were analysed. The performance of health promoting behavior related to the prevention of infectious diseases showed the highest score above all. The school, which received health education by the scheduled education course, home correspondence, and health broadcasting education, showed higher health promoting behavior performance after the health education. On the basis of the results of this study, health promotion program development is required to accomplish health promoting behavior among the elementary school students.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between oral health locus of control and oral health behavior promotion in the adolescents. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 493 high school students in Jeonju by convenience sampling from March to June, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of fourteen questions of oral health locus of control, fifteen questions of oral health behavior promotion, and seven questions of the general characteristics of the subjects. Data analysis was done by frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple range test. Results: Oral health behavior promotion and oral health behavior index of internal locus of control showed a positive correlation, Higher internal locus of control showed a positive oral health behavior promotion. The higher propensity of oral health on the external locus of control showed the negative effects. Conclusions: The oral health internal locus of control was closely related to better oral health behavior in the adolescents.
Backgroud & Objectives: The purpose of the study was to develop an innovative blended learning method on life style and health promotion and evaluate the educational effects for university students. Methods: The blended learning was developed to combine face-to-face lecture(off-line lecture) and on-line lecture that applied the subject of life style and health promotion. This course is a coordinated effort towards providing 5 topics of lifestyle such as smoking, alcohol, exercise, diet, and stress management. This has been verified by an expert in the field of nursing, education, e-learning technician and students. Participants were different part of university students (n=28) with major enrolled in a general culture course for 2 credits which composed of 8 sessions of each 2-hour in the first semester of 2010. The study was a one group posttest design. A self-report about health knowledge, attitude, and health behavior was organized by content analysis after the sessions. Results: Positive feedbacks from students were reflected in the outcome. Student regarded good lifestyle as being the most important. Student concerned those on-line lectures are not only available at most time and site, but also good for individualization, visual understanding and interest. Face-to-face lecture provided student a chance to integrate with knowledge and experience and had desire to improve good lifestyle and health promotion. Conclusions: The blended learning method on good lifestyle and health could make a best use of improvement for knowledge, attitude and behavior concerning. It is needed to identify the long term effects of a blended learning for further study.
Objectives: A hospital is a complex building that serves many different purposes. It has a major impact on patient's well-being as well as on the work efficiency of the hospital staff. Thermal comfort is one of the major factors in indoor comfort. The purpose of this study was to determine thermal comfort in various locations in a hospital. Methods: Various indoor environmental conditions in a general hospital were measured in February 2014. The predicted mean vote (PMV) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) concentration were measured simultaneously in the lobby, office, restaurant, and ward. Results: The ward was the most thermally comfortable location (PMV=0.44) and the lobby was the most uncomfortable (PMV = -1.39). However, the $CO_2$ concentration was the highest in the ward (896 ppm) and the lowest in the lobby (572 ppm). The average PMV value was the most comfortable in the ward and the lowest in the lobby. In contrast, for concentration of carbon dioxide, the highest average was in the ward and the lowest in the lobby. Due to air conditioner operation, during operating hours the PMV showed values close to 0 compared to the non-operating time. Correlation between PMV and $CO_2$ differed by location. Conclusion: The PMV and concentration of carbon dioxide of the hospital lobby, office, restaurant and ward varied. The relationship between PMV and carbon dioxide differed by location. Consideration of how to apply PMV and carbon dioxide is needed when evaluating indoor comfort.
This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between self efficacy and a health locus of control. We conveniently sampled 204 university students who smoke. We invastigated by using questionaries and collected data that were analyzed using a t - test, an analysis of variance, a Pearson product-moment correlation. The results are as follows: 1. The average score of self efficacy was 66.16 (out of a total score of 100.00) in university students who smoke. In relation to the health locus of control, the internality score was highest at 25.22, the influence of others was 20.39, and the effect of chance was 15.86. 2. In a significant test of the general character other and aspect related to the smoking of the subjects and in the score of the health locus of control, the internality score of subjects who had been never been asked to quit smoking was higher than that of subjects who had been. There are significant differences in the scores concerning the influence of powerful others, especially religion. In chance occurrences, the score of subjects in medical school was higher than in other schools. The lower the age one beginns smoking, the higher the score of chance. 3. In a significant test of the general character and other aspects related to smoking and the score of self efficacy, there was no significant relationship. 4. Considering the relation of self efficacy to a health locus of control, a positive relationship between self efficacy and internality, and the influence of others, but not between self efficacy and the effect of chance. With these results, we can conclude that the higher the level of self efficacy, the higher the internality, the higher the influence of powerful others. Consequently, it is necessary to identify the relationships clearly among self efficacy the health locus of control by repeated research. It can be used to support, revise and develop health behavior theory.
Objectives : The objectives of this study were to examine the difference in attitude toward health-specific locus-of-control and medical care among western medical students, oriental Medical students, and non-medical school students. Methods : The subjects of this study were 667 students who agreed to respond the questionnaire :212 western medical school students, 190 oriental medical school students, and 205 non-medical school students. The health-specific locus of control was measured by the structured questionnaire developed by Lau and Ware. The attitude toward western and oriental medicine was also measured by the questionnaire. Results : Western medical students and non-medical school students were more likely than oriental medical students to place high value on 'the provider control over health' and 'the general threat to health' scales (F=20.47, F=19.98). But oriental medical school students ranked 'the self control of health' scale as more important than any other locus of control scale (F=19.34). The health specific locus of control was also different from the grade. When trte grade was increased, 'the provider control over health' scale was slowly decreased, especially in western medical students and non medical school students. However, the 'general threat to health' scale was increased in oriental medical students. Western medical school students expressed more positive attitude toward western medicine. Oriental medical school students put a higher score on oriental medicine. Nevertheless, as the grade was increased, the positive attitude toward oriental medicine slightly decreased in oriental medical school students. Conclusions : There is a difference in health-specific locus of control and attitude toward medicine among western medical students, oriental medical students, and non-medical students. The locus of control and attitude of medical students towards medicine may affect both how they behave towards patients and how they help shape future public policy. Therefore, interdisciplinary educational initiatives may be the best way to handle this issue.
This study was conducted to explore the relationship between locus of control and health belief. the life style of gastric cancer patients. The subjects of this study were 40 of the early gastric cancer and 90 of the advanced gastric cancer who first visiting patient to general surgery out patient department of Chungnam University Hospital for operation. The data was collected with structured questionnaire from July. 1998 to Feb. 1999 The tool were Moon's Health Belief Scale and Multiple Locus of Control of Wallston. Wallston, DeVellis. The data was analysed by SAS program using frequency, $X^2$-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, ANOVA. Scheffe-test, t-test. The results were as follows 1. 30.8% of subjects were early gastric cancer anf 69.2% were advanced gastric cancer. The subject knowing about diagnosis was 83.1%. 16.9% did'nt know about diagnosis. 2. The correlationship between Health belief and Locus of control of subjects was not supported. 3. There was statistically no difference of life style between early and advanced gastric cancer patients. 4. There were statistically significant differences in perceived sensitivity according to weight. educational level. and birth order, in perceived barrier according to educational level. and in perceived severity according to occupation among demographic characteristics of study subjects. From above results. health professional has to educate general population to detect gastric cancer early to improve survival rate because early gastric cancer is high in survival rate, and to prevent recurrence and to maintain continuing healthy status. In the future, gastroscopy also has to expand to detect early. For there was no difference in life style between early and advanced gastric cancer. carcinogen related to diet should be emphasized through education. The perceived benefit among health belief model was not supported in this study therefore further study and comparison between gastric cancer and normal population are needed.
