  • In general, the cutting pattern of the membrane structures is determined by dividing the complicated curved 3-D surface into several 2-D plane strip by using flattening technique. In this procedure, however, some discrepancies ore occurred between actual stresses of equilibrated state and designed uniform stresses because the material properties are not considered. These deviations can cause the critical structural problems, wrinkling or overstress, and thus a optimization process should be considered. In this paper, a new analytical method for determining an optimum cutting pattern considering material properties is presented. Here, iterative procedure is introduced to decrease the errors caused in numerical process. The optimization method proposed can diminish the deviations occurred by material properties and numerical errors, simultaneously. As a results, it is shown that the final stress distributions for the HP shell model are sufficiently near to design stress distributions, and it can be concluded that this method can be used to obtain the optimized cutting pattern of membrane structures.

  • Counting statistics modified by introducing two dead times in series under a Poisson input distribution are discussed. A previous study examined the two cases of series combinations of nonextended-extended (NE-E) and extended-extended (EE) dead times. The present study investigated the remaining two cases of extended-nonextended (E-NE) and nonextended-nonextended (NE-NE) dead times. For the three time origins of the counting processes - ordinary, equilibrium, and shifted processes - a set of formulae was newly developed from a general formulation and presented for the event time interval densities, total densities, and exact mean and variance of the counts in a given counting duration. The asymptotic expressions for the mean and variance of the counts, which are most convenient for applications, were fully listed. The equilibrium mean count rates distorted by the three dead times in series were newly derived from the information obtained in these studies. An application of the derived formulae is briefly discussed.

  • Collapse is an abnormal shrinkage resulting in uneven, rough surfaces and/or warping of sawn timber. The maximum abnormal shrinkages of the oak and persimmon specimens were obtained by the quasi-equilibrium drying and were compared with the other drying methods. The effect of steaming and freezing treatments on the shrinkage of wood was also investigated. The Quasi-equilibrium drying used in this study was proved as a good tool to make the maximum abnormal shrinkage of wood. The maximum abnormal volumetric shrinkage possibly caused by collapse could be 16.3% and 14.3% for the oak and persimmon specimens, respectively. In general the steaming-treated specimens shrank less than the controls for the oak specimens, but did more for the persimmon specimens. The volumetric shrinkages of the freezing-treated specimens were more various between the drying methods than those of the control and steaming-treated specimens.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to develop a tractable general-equilibrium model of examining the impact of human resource management on intra-industry trade. Commonly, managers of Korean firms are promoted internally. It necessitates a study of human resource management and its impact on an industrial equilibrium. Design/methodology - This paper relies on theoretical analysis. We build a model in firms are hierarchical; an entrepreneur, managers, and workers. All individuals have heterogeneous managerial talents, which are the main source of managerial quality. Firms search talents for prospect managers, and eventually delegate them to supervise workers. The searching incurs a sunk cost. Findings - Our finding is as follows. Country 1, relatively abundant of managerial talents, can gain more from trade than Country 2, relatively scarce of managerial talents. This is because the higher searching cost leads to the lower survival rate of firms in Country 2. Implicatively, good jobs are destroyed, and aggregate income falls in Country 2. Originality/value - According to our study, relative abundance of managerial talents affects distribution of firm size and determines trade gain. This study can contribute to the literature of organization management and trade.

  • In this study, we developed a micromixer based on the non-equilibrium electrokinetics at the junction of a microchannel and nanochannel. Two fluid streams were mixed by an electro-osmotic flow and a vortex flow created as a result of the non-equilibrium electrokinetics at the junction of the microchannel and nanochannel. Initially, the microchannel was fabricated using Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by the general soft lithography process and the nanochannel was created at a specific position on the microchannel by applying a high voltage. To evaluate the mixing performance of the micromixer, fluorescent distribution was analyzed by using the fluorescent dye, Rhodamine B. About 90% mixing was achieved with this novel micromixer, and this micromixer can be used in microsystems for biochemical sample analysis.

  • The purpose of this research was to analyze and improve the experiment, observing the color change under compression on the equilibrium of $2NO_2\;{\rightleftarrow}\;N_2O_4$ system, described in high school and general chemistry textbooks. Chemistry textbooks described that the reddish brown color got lighter on the compression of $2NO_2\;{\rightleftarrow}\;N_2O_4$ system. This misinterpretation was due to no consideration of $NO_2$ concentration increase by the volume decrease. In order to propose a correct interpretation, the changes of color and temperature on compression were quantitatively measured and compared with theoretical studies. In addition, an improved experiment, excluding the effect of $NO_2$ concentration increase, was proposed to observe only the color change of the net equilibrium shift.

  • In this paper a general analytical approach is proposed to analyse the nonlinear response of elastic cable under complex loads. The effect of temperature change on the cable is also considered. From the vertical equilibrium equations of cable, the general analytical formula of vertical displacement is derived. Based on the vertical displacement formula and on the compatibility condition of the cable, the dimensionless equation with respect to cable tension is established. By means of such analytical procedures, the exact solutions of various cable problems can be obtained quickly. The example given in this paper shows that the new procedure is efficient for practical analysis and can be easily implemented by a general computer program without the superposition problem which there has always been in traditional analytical methods.

  • Based on the coupled elastic bending deformation features and relationships between the internal force and deformation of pre-twisted Euler beam, the generalized strain, the equivalent constitutive equation and the equilibrium equation of pre-twisted Euler beam are developed. Based on the properties of the dual-antisymmetric matrix, the general solution of pre-twisted Euler beam is obtained. By comparison with ANSYS solution by using straight Beam-188 element based on infinite approach strategy, the results show that the developed method is available for pre-twisted Euler beam and also provide an accuracy displacement interpolation function for the subsequent finite element analysis. The effect of pre-twisted angle on the mechanical property has been investigated.

  • Existing researches on tax efficiency of environmental taxes mostly focuses on taxes imposed on the consumption process of the final output, or goods that create pollution during the input process of intermediate goods. The assumption here is that there is a significant relation between the consumption of polluting goods and the pollution itself. However, in reality they are not identical. This signifies that the above assumption may distort the actual results. This study classifies environmental tax into two different forms, output tax and emission tax. Theformer is the tax that is imposed on the consumption of polluting goods, while the latter is directly levied onto the emission of pollution. It then compares the efficiency of these taxes through the computational general equilibrium simulations. After analyzing the simulation, it was proven that the direct imposition on pollution, or environmental tax as emission tax, was more effective in terms of tax efficiency. Furthermore, these results were revealed as irrelevant to the assumption of homotheticity in utility function. Thus, if market-distortionary tax already exist, then the effectiveness of revenue neutral environmental tax reform will be sensitive to the assumption of homotheticity for utility function. However, environmental taxes as emission taxes have been shown to be more effective in tax efficiency than output taxes.

  • An analytical procedure is described to estimate the mobilized tensile forces along the effective lengths of nails. Based on the horizontal focing displacements of a nailed-soil wall experiencing outward tilt about the toe with granular soil deposit, the variation of nail-soil friction coefficient is modeled. Also, the method of overall stability analysis of a nailed-soil wall is presented using the Morgenstem-Price limit-equilibrium slice method. The results predicted by the developed procedure are compared with test measurements. The comparisons show in general good agreement.
