Surfaces of many engineering structures, specially, those of ships and airplanes are commonly fabricated as doubly curved shapes as well as singly curved surfaces to fulfill functional requirements. Given a three dimensional design surface, the first step in the fabrication process is unfolding or planar development of this surfaces into a planar shape so that the manufacturer can determine the initial shape of the flat plate. Also a good planar development enables the manufacturer to estimate the strain distribution required to form the design shape. In this paper, an algorithm for optimal approximated development of a general curved surface, including both singly and doubly curved surface is developed in the sense that the strain energy from its planar development to the design surface is minimized, subjected to some constraints. The development process is formulated into a constrained nonlinear programming problem, which is on basis of deformation theory and finite element. Constraints are subjected to characteristics of the fabrication method. Some examples on typical surfaces and the practical ship surfaces show the effectiveness of this algorithm.
Surfaces of many engineering structures, especially, those of ships are commonly made out of either single- or double-curved surfaces to meet functional requirements. The first step in the fabrication process of a three-dimensional design surface is unfolding or flattening the surface, otherwise known as planar development, so that manufacturers can determine the initial flat plate which is required to form the design shape. In this paper, an algorithm for optimal approximated development of a general curved surface, including both single- and double-curved surfaces, is established by minimizing the strain energy of deformation from its planar development to the design surface. The unfolding process is formulated into a constrained nonlinear programming problem, based on the deformation theory and finite element. Constraints are subjected to the characteristics of the fabrication method. And the design surface, or the curved shell plate is subdivided by automatic mesh generation.
Curved 3D objects represented by range data contain large amounts of information compared with planar objects, but do not have distinct features for matching to those of object models. This makes it difficult to represent and identify a general 3D curved object. This paper introduces a new approach to representing and finding a holdsite of general 3D curved objects using range data. We develop a three-dimensional generalized Hough transformation which can be also applied to general 3D curved object recognition and which reduces both the computation time and storage requirements. Our approach makes use of the relative geometric differences between particular points on the object surface and some model points which are prespecified arbitrarily and task dependently.
This paper presents the electro-luminescence (EL) display lamp which is patterned on a curved surface by the pad printing method. The printing methods, including the gravure, screen, flexo, inkjet, and pad printing, have an advantage of one-step direct patterning. However, in general, the printing and semi-conductor process, except pad printing method, cannot be applied for patterning on a curved surface. Thus, in this paper, we used pad printing method for patterning an EL display lamp on a curved surface. The EL display lamp consists of 5 layers: Bottom electrode; Dielectric layer; Phosphor; Transparent electrode; Bus electrode. Finally, we printed EL display lamp on a dish, which has a radius of curvature 80mm. The EL display lamp was driven at AC 200V of 1kHz.
Domestic photovoltaic system for roof-top is installed towards the south at an angle of 20 to 35 degrees and the shape of PV array is divided into two kinds; a plane shape and a curved shape. This paper aims to understand an actual condition of PV facility and strengths and weaknesses of support structure production and installation and to consider the best PV surface shape by analyzing theoretical logics of these two surface shapes and architectural perspective-based realistic case studies. This study targeted 98 facilities including common houses, public institutions and education institutions. In common houses, all of 59 PV facilities have a plane surface. In public institutions, 7 of 15 PV facilities have a curved array surface and 8 PV facilities have a plane surface. In education institutions, also, 14 of 24 PV facilities have a plane array surface and 10 PV facilities have a curved surface. Most of 98 facilities have a flat roof supporting shape. However, it was found that the curved shape wasn't positive for PV generation due to the change of radial density and it was at least 10 % more expensive to produce its structure. Also, domestic general large single-plate PV facilities have problems of harmony with buildings and wind load. Therefore, it is considered that for fixed-type roof-top PV, a plane PV array shape is good for optimum generation and economic efficiency and a parallel array structure on the roof surface is favorable to wind load and snow load without being a hindrance to the building facade.
In general, the forming process of the curved hull plates consists of sub tasks, such as roll bending, line heating, and triangle heating. In order to complement the automated curved hull forming system, it is necessary to develop an algorithm to classify the curved hull plates of a ship into standard shapes with respect to the techniques of forming task, such as the roll bending, the line heating, and the triangle heating. In this paper, the curved hull plates are classified by four standard shapes and the combination of them, or saddle, convex, flat, cylindrical shape, and the combination of them, that are related to the forming tasks necessary to form the shapes. In preprocessing, the Gaussian curvature and the mean curvature at the mid-point of a mesh of modeling surface by Coon's patch are calculated. Then the nearest neighbor method to classify the input plate type is applied. Tests to verify the developed algorithm with sample plates of a real ship data have been performed.
This paper proposes a method to calculate the static characteristics of the FDBs with the curved surface. The general Reynolds equations are derived for the curved surfaces in the ${\theta}s$ plane. And the Reynolds equation is transformed to the finite element equations by considering the continuity of pressure and flow at the interface between the curved, journal and the thrust bearings. It also includes the Reynolds boundary condition in the numerical analysis to simulate the cavitation phenomenon. The static characteristics of the coupled journal and conical bearings were investigated due to the variation of conical angle. It shows that the conical angle is one of the important design parameters affecting the static and dynamic characteristics of FBBs.
Stereographic method is a general and basic method to analyse sliding failure potential of rock slope. Region of failure analysis using stereographic method extend to curved slope from straight slope in this paper, Curved slope is defined as the multi-face slope with free surface more than two face and has different characteristics from straight single face slope. Individual daylight envelopes of free surfaces are combined into total daylight envelope of multi-face slope. So, sliding envelope of multi-face slope is the daylight envelope except friction cone. Specially, If only single joint set is developed in the slope, single plane sliding(or plane failure) is impossible in the single-face straight slope, but possible in the multi-face slope. In the multi-face slope with only one joint set, single plane sliding occurs when orientation of sliding plane is between two side slope orientation in the sliding envelope.
The study is concerned with the investigation of curved line folding of developable surface from flat sheets of metal. General geometric relations among folding line, folded surface, folded angle are derived. From the derived geometric relations, the required plastic work and punch force are derived for the first approximation. Five methods of forming are suggested and the experiment is carried out using two chosen methods for the prismatic developable surfaces of which cross-sections have 103.deg.arc, 180.deg.arc, sinusoidal shape. In the die design for the tolding of prismatic developable surfaces, a stack of sheets were used to form shapes of the dies by which acceptable folded surfaces were obtained. The computed plastic work and punch force turned out to be in reasonable agreement with the experimental result.
In laser imaging, accurate extraction of the laser's center is essential. Several methods exist to extract the laser's center in an image, such as the geometric mean, the parabolic curve fitting, and the Gaussian curve fitting, etc. The Gaussian curve fitting is the most suitable because it is based on the physical properties of the laser. The width of the Gaussian laser beam depends on the distance from the laser source to the target object. It is assumed in general that the distance remains constant at a laser spot resulting in a symmetric Gaussian model for the laser image. However, on a curved surface of the object, the distance is not constant; The laser beam is narrower on the side closer to the focal point of the laser light and wider on the side closer to the laser source, which causes the distribution of the laser beam to skew. This study presents a modified Gaussian model in the laser imaging to incorporate the slant angle of a curved object. The proposed method is verified with simulation and experiments.
