냉전시대와 미국의 푸드시스템: 전후 미국의 문화, 젠더, 소비주의 (Cold War and the US Food System: Culture, Gender, and Consumerism in Postwar America)

  • This essay investigates how the industrialization of the US food system was closely linked to US foreign policy, gender issues, and the rise of consumerism in the Cold War era. While many scholars in American studies and women's studies over the past few decades have paid increasing attention to the interrelationship of gender politics and the media industry in shaping US domesticity, they have seldom studied how and why reading gender issues in relation to environmental discourse in general and the industrialized US food system in particular can help us better understand the complex relationship between environmental and social problems that we are facing today, both collectively and individually. In this context, this essay shows how US national politics have not only created the ideal of American domesticity that promotes traditional gender roles and consumerism at the expense of gender equality, but also negatively affected women's somatic and mental health writ large. By closely examining the cultural implications of Nixon's and Khrushchev's Kitchen Debate in the 1950s alongside newspapers, photographs, advertisements, and Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar (1963), I argue that reading Cold War consumer culture in relation to the US food system leads readers to see the invisible links between gender politics and today's environmental and social problems in comparative and global contexts.

한국 복지정치의 젠더메커니즘: 태도의 성별차이와 복지지위 매개효과를 중심으로 (Gender Mechanism of Korean Welfare Politics: Gender Difference in Attitudes and Mediating Effects of Welfare Statuses)

  • 본 연구는 복지지위론을 분석틀로 삼아 한국 복지정치에서의 젠더메커니즘을 규명하고 있다. 기존의 한국 실증연구들이 대부분 여성의 복지태도가 부정적이거나 통계적으로 무의미하다고 보고하고 있는데, 본연구의 태도에 관한 성별차이 분석도 이를 지지하는 방향의 결과를 도출하였다. 하지만 복지지위론의 견지에서 구조방정식모형을 적용한 결과, 한국 복지정치의 젠더메커니즘이 다음과 같이 구조화된다는 사실이 판명되었다. 첫째, 노동시장에서의 성별격차와 사회보험중심구조 하에서 한국 여성들은 남성보다 낮은 복지수급자 지위를 지니며 덜 친복지적인 태도를 지닌다. 둘째, 복지서비스 제공자를 매개로 해서는 남성보다 더 친복지적인 태도를 지닌다. 셋째, 여성은 복지납세자로서 낮은 지위를 갖기 때문에 친복지정당지지의 가능성이 남성보다 높은 것으로 나타난다. 결론적으로 이 연구에서는 노동시장 소득과 직결된 현금중심 전략에서 벗어나 욕구중심의 사회서비스중심 전략으로 전환할 경우, 여성을 친복지정치의 새로운 우군으로 확보할 수 있음을 보여주고 있다.

『사만』에 나타난 아유 우따미의 현실인식에 관한 고찰 (A Study on the Realization of the Actuality Represented in Ayu Utami's Saman)

  • Saman, a novel written by Ayu Utami, has been recognized as the symbol of the politico-social changes, which began to occur since the collapse of Suharto' New Order regime in 1998. In the novel, Ayu Utami showed the spirits of resistance against various absurd socio-political circumstances during the New Order era such as pressure on discussion, abuse of power, politics-business collusion, patriarchism, and suppression of gender. In representing those spirits, Ayu Utami used unconventional structure-making, fresh feedback and multilayered descriptions of the figures, which brought her a fame as the pioneer of the Fragrant Literature (Angkatan Wangi or chick-lit). Ayu Utami particularly criticized that, under the name of sustaining the national integrity and identity, the New Order regime enhanced patriarchal system, which consequently infringed gender equality and women's rights to self-determination. In addition, Ayu Utami argued that the abuse of power and politics-business collusion, which were prevalent during the New Order period, destroyed lives of the masses and the Indonesian society.

Fashion Politics of Mrs. Obama during Presidential Campaign

  • Dress and appearance are said to be related to power which results in in.f1uencing others. Fashion and appearance style of the first African American First Lady, Michelle Obama during the presidential campaign and the inaugural period were examined. It was analyzed how Mrs. Obama has used her appearance styling to give influence on the American people. Content analysis was applied to understand the meaning of her style. Cultural meaning of her appearance styling during presidential campaign was explained in terms of class ambivalence, racial tension, and gender ambivalence. Strategic negotiation among different classes, gender, and racial groups was shown in her styling and proven to be powerful.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the aesthetic characteristics of outerization phenomenon of contemporary fashion. Outerization, transforming underwear as outerwear, is one of the most dominant and widespread fashion trends in the dawning of new millenium. Fashion always exists for living body and tributes to express idealized beauty of human body and aesthetics of the era. If so, exploring the formative expressions and aesthetic characteristics of outerization would be an meaningful guideline to deduce changed relationship between fashion and body of the 21st century. The methodology of this study is to research of fashion collections such as Paris, Milan and New York which were held the first decade of new millenium, from 2000 Spring/Summer to 2009 Spring/Summer. The styles expressing outerization were selected and assorted based on the main formative expression. Then the aesthetic characteristics were classified. The way of expression of outerization is categorized into 4 parts ; Transition, Exposure, Transparency, and Deconstruction. Aesthetic Characters of outerization is classified 4 assortments as well ; Eroticism, Fun with parody and kitch, cyber culture, Gender politics, and Power fetish. Eroticism is the most clearly identified one. Coming out of underwear imply naked body itself, so it has erotic appeal. Fun is the second character. A pleasant sensation from the outerization of undergarments maximizes a disposition of play from parody, kitch, and cyber culture. The third is Gender Politics and it introspects how the society consumes woman body in history and modern times. Power Fetish, the last one, speaks for the female body with changed vision for femininity underneath the sphere of influence of feminism and post modernism, then emphasizes the subjectivity and independence of woman. From the research above, this study will help to understand the overwhelming outerization phenomenon and contribute to expansion of the horizon of the study of fashion aesthetics. It will serve fashion creative source through various outerization cases as well.

교육수준 별 혼인표의 비대칭성으로 살펴본 남녀불평등지수 (Measuring of Gender Inequality: Asymmetry of Marriage Table with respect to Educational Level)

  • 본 연구는 교육수준 별 혼인표에서 나타나는 남녀 결혼의 비대칭성을 조사하여 남녀불평등 정도를 측정하고자 한다. 연구의 기본가정은 남녀간의 불평등이 존재할때는 남자가 결혼하는 유형과 여자가 결혼하는 유형이 다르다는 것이다. 남녀불평 등 정도가 큰 사회에서는 여자의 지위가 남자의 지위에 비해 높다는 사실을 받아들이기가 상대적으로 더 힘들다. 구체적인 연구의 목적은 혼인표의 비대칭성을 측정하기 위한 통계모형과 지수를 개발하는 것이다. 아울러 국가별로 다르게 나타나는 남녀불평등지수의 차이에 미친 원인을 찾아보고자 한다. 이 분야에서 남녀불평등정도의 차이에 관한 중요한 이론으로 논의되는 두 가지 이론은 산업화론과 정치 /문화이론이다. 이러한 연구목적을 위해 27여개의 교육수준일 혼인표가 분석되었다. 가설검증과 같은 방법으로 엄격하게 이론의 타당성을 살펴본 것은 아니지만, 분석결과를 통해서 몇 가지 시사점을 찾아볼 수 있다. 첫째, 상대적으로 덜 산업화된 국가들에 비해. 산업화가 많이 진척된 나라일수록 남녀불평등의 정도가 작다. 둘째. 다른 조건이 같다면, 정치제도가 선택결혼의 정도에 영향을 미친다. 셋째. 이러한 정치적인 요인뿐만 아니라 문화적인 요인도 적어도 결혼과 관련하여 남녀불평등 정도에 영향을 준 것으로 보여진다 요약하자면, 본 연구는 남녀불평등과 관련요인의 관계에 대해서 일종의 수정된 산업화이론을 시사하고 있다 즉, 대부분의 국가에서는 산업화의 진척에 따라 남녀불평등 정도가 작아진다 동시에 몇몇 국가에서는 그 나라 특유의 정치제도나 문화적 경험에 많은 영향을 받는 것으로 보인다. 이러한 결과는 산업화 정도에 따른 남녀 간 사회적 지위의 감소 등을 강조하는 기존의 이론을 부분적으로 확인하는 것이다. 동시에 단순이 산업화의 정도가 그러한 경향을 보장하는 것은 아니다라는 것을 강조하고 하고 있다.

남성 아브젝트라는 새로운 가부장의 형상과 계급 재현의 젠더 정치 -영화 <기생충>을 중심으로 (New Aspect of Patriarch as a Male Abject and Gender Politics of Class Representation - Focusing on )

  • 본고는 영화 <기생충>에서 계급적 양극화를 드러내는 혐오스러운 남성 아브젝트의 젠더적 재현 양상에 주목한다. 프레카리아트 남성이 혐오스러운 신체/위치를 자임함으로써 남성 가부장이 되는 새로운 감정정치의 양상을 독해하고자 한다. <기생충>은 통념적인 가족 서사와 반대로 부모를 책임지는 자식이라는 전도를 보여준다. 타인의 자리를 빼앗아야 자신의 자리가 생긴다는 신자유주의적 생존법을 부모 세대에게 가르쳐주는 것이다. 민혁으로부터 성공한 구세대 가부장의 유산인 수석을 전달받은 뒤부터, 기우는 중산층 남성 주체가 될 수 있다는 희망을 품는다. 그러나 이 전망을 상실한 뒤 기우는 아버지에게 먼저 죄송하다고 역전된 고백을 한다. 가족의 계급적 지위를 지켜내기 위해 자신이 희생해야 한다는 과잉된 책임 윤리를 드러낸다. 기택 역시 동익과 가부장으로서의 동일시를 시도했지만, 이 남성 연대가 계급에 의해 무너지면서 급작스러운 분노에 휩싸여 살인을 저지른다. 그 결과 기택은 몸에서 악취가 나는 지하생활자라는 혐오스러운 지위로 내려가게 되고, 오직 기우만이 고립된 아버지로부터 윤리적 반성의 메시지를 수신한다. 영화는 계급적 양극화라는 구조에 맞서 싸운 부자에게 윤리적 투사라는 숭고한 지위를 부여하는데, 특히 결말의 에필로그와 내레이션은 부자간의 윤리적 책임감과 상호 연대를 강조한다. 이 과정에서 여성 인물들의 목소리는 점차 누락시켜 남성 인물들을 향한 젠더적 선별을 희미하게 만든다. <기생충>은 계급적 아브젝트를 자임함으로써 윤리적으로 주체화되는 신자유주의 시대 프레카리아트 남성의 정치적 재현 전략을 드러내고, 혐오를 젠더적으로 선별해 재현함으로써 가부장의 책임 윤리를 새롭게 미학화하고 있다.

  • This research is based on the survey of welfare beneficiaries, aiming to set up the gender-equal welfare policies. Through the survey, this research examines status of women in the family and society and also examines, the degree of perception of women's welfare policies, needs, and satisfaction. According to the survey results, the current welfare policies that are limited to needy women should expand its range, enforcing the infra structure. That employment policy for women turned out to be very important in welfare policies. Demand for more enlarged welfare policies is quite high, especially in housing, employment and elderly care. On the contrary, the degree of satisfaction degree appears quite low because of unrealistic welfare program and benefits. In order to improve the welfare policies, more active and realistic employment policies should be emphasized with the proper support for family life. To raise the status of women, proper policies for women's economic independence should be set up. In addition, consciousness of gender equality should be encouraged in the whole society. Also, women's participation in politics and decision-making process is necessary.

記憶とパワーのジェンダーポリティックス: 東アジアの国際関係において日本の平和憲法と慰安部問題の意味づけ (Gendered Politics of Memory and Power: Making Sense of Japan's Peace Constitution and the Comfort Women in East Asian International Relations)

  • This paper examines how Japanese society produced and reproduced a distinctively gendered history and memories of the experience of WWII and colonialism in the postwar era. We argue that these gendered narratives, which were embedded in postwar debates about the Peace Constitution and comfort women, have engendered contradictions and made the historical conflicts with neighboring countries challenging to resolve. On the one hand, this deepens conflict, but on the other, it also generates stability in East Asia. After Japan's defeat in WWII, the American Occupation government created the Peace Constitution, which permanently "renounces war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes." The removal of the state's monopoly on violence - the symbol of masculinity - resulted in Japan's feminization. This feminization led to collective forgetting of prewar imperialism and militarism in postwar Japan. While collectively forgetting the wartime history of comfort women within these feminized narratives, the conservative movement to revise the Peace Constitution attempted to recover Japan's masculinity for a new, autonomous role in international politics, as uncertainty in East Asia increased. Ironically, however, this effort strengthened Japan's femininity because it involved forgetting Japan's masculine role in the past. This forgetting has undermined efforts to achieve masculine independence, thus reinforcing dependence on the United States. Recurrent debates about the Peace Constitution and comfort women have influenced how Japanese political elites and intellectual society have constructed distinctive social institutions, imagined foreign relations, and framed contemporary problems, as indicated in their gendered restructuring of history.

젠더, 범죄, (여성)탐정 -초기 영미 추리소설의 성정치학 (Gender, Crime, (Woman) Detective: Sexual Politics of Early British and American Detective Fiction)

  • This paper examines the role of gender ideology in early British and American detective fiction focusing on the female detectives. Since a detective's attributes honor and idealize such traditionally masculine qualities as independence, intelligence, heroism, and bravery, the woman detective fiction has potentiality to operate against the established gender norms. The narratives about women in pursuit of justice and order through their criminal investigation can allow women to possess the masculine rationality and power. The subversive possibility inherent in the woman detective fiction is, however, contained by the representation of the female detectives and the negotiation through narratives. A female detective is represented either as unfeminine and thus unattractive and unlikeable or as desperate for survival. Her threatening potentiality is easily dismissed as that of an inadequate woman or a desperate one. The compromise in narratives is effected by the following three ways: first, a female detective is assigned to investigate crimes as an assistant to the male detectives; second, staying within the domestic sphere, she solves crimes by using her expert knowledge of the domestic service; and third, her detective narrative ends with the conventional marriage plot. Confining the female detectives within the conventional feminine roles and domains, the woman detective fiction supports and reestablishes the dominant gender ideology.
