  • Optimal Mullite sol was synthesized by sol-gel process using Aluminium sec-butoxide(ASB), Tetraethoxysilane(TEOS) and then, Mullite films were dip-coated with various holding time in sol bath and heat-treated at 130$0^{\circ}C$ above for crystallization. The thickness of coated film increased linearly with holding time in sol bath and average pore size was controllable within 20~30$\AA$.

  • Porous glass in the ZrO2.SiO2 system containning up to 30mol% zirconia were prepared by the sol-gel method from metal alkoxides and their pore characteristics with reaction parameters were investigated. The gels were made by hydrolyzing and condensation of the mixed metla alkoxides and were converted into the porous glass by heating up to $700^{\circ}C$. As a results, the mean pore radius became larger with increasing contents of HCl, H2O and hydrolysis temperature, and an alcohol with a large molecular weight for making the porous glass. In the case of 20ZrO2.80SiO2 porous glass with heated at $700^{\circ}C$, HCl and H2O content was 0.3mol and 4mol, the specific surface area was 284$m^2$/g, average mean pore radius was about 19.4$\AA$, porosity was 22.55% and pore characteristics depended on heating temperature.

  • To control the pore size of silcia gel, formamide (FA), N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) were added in the sol-gel process from starting solution with tetramethyl orthosilicate (TMOS). The gels were characterized using porosimeter, TG-DTA and SEM. As a result, the more contents of FA and PAA was increased the more gelation time was decreased, also the more contents of DMF and PEG was increased the more gelling time was increased. The mean pore size of gels was larger in the order of PAA, DMF, FA and PEG. And the mean pore size of porous silica glass was 59.0$\AA$, 31.5$\AA$, 29.9$\AA$ and 29.0$\AA$, respectively, heated at 75$0^{\circ}C$/100$0^{\circ}C$.

  • The influence of calcination temperature on the pore structure of freeze dried silica gel derived from tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was investigated using $N_2$adsorption and mercury intrusion techniques. Freeze dried material contained not only 4-6 nm sized mesopores and 6-10 $\mu\textrm{m}$ sized macropores, but minor micropores. The change of pore structure due to the increase of calcination temperature was dependant upon the degree of densification.

  • Boehmite (AlOOH) powder with uniform pore size and high specific surface area were synthesized via sol-gel method using metal salts, $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $NaAlO_2$. During these synthetic process, the effects of the aging time were investigated to determine the optimal synthetic conditions of boehmite. X-ray diffraction, BET, Raman/IR, and scanning electron microscopy techniques were used for the characterization of the powder. Boehmite gel synthesized at the first stage of the experimental procedure transformed to crystalline boehmite phase after aging for 6 hours. The specific surface area of the crystalline boehmite showed a maximum value, $350m^2/g$, at aging time of 72 hours. The pore size of the boehmite increased with increasing aging time and the boehmite with average pore diameter of 3.6 nm was obtained at aging time of 96 hours.

  • This study is about the development of a non-sintered binder (NSB) which does not require a sintering process by using the industrial by-products Phosphogypsum (PG), Waste Lime (WL) and Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS). In this report, through SEM analysis of the NSB paste hardening body, micropore analysis of paste using the mercury press-in method and microstructure observation were executed to consider the influence of the formation of the pore structure and the distribution of pore volume on strength, and the following conclusions were reached. 1) Pore structure of NSB paste of early age is influenced by hydrate generation amount by GBFS and activator. 2) Through observing the internal microstructure of NSB binder paste, it was found that the strength expression at early age due to hydration reaction was achieved with a large amount of ettringite serving as the frame with C-S-H gel generated at the same time. It was confirmed that C-S-H gel wrapped around ettringite, and as time passed, the amount generated continually increased, and C-S-H gel tightly filled the pores of hardened paste, forming a dense network-type web structure. 3) For NSB-type cement, the degree of formation of gel pores below $10{\mu}m$ had a greater influence on strength improvement than simple pore reduction by charging capillary pores, and the pore size that had the greatest effect on strength was micropores with diameter below $10{\mu}m$.

  • Hydrate phase equilibrium for the binary CO2+water and CH4+water mixtures in silica gel pore of nominal 6, 30, and 100 nm were measured and compared with the cacluated results based on van der Waals and Platteeuw model. At a specific temperature three-phase hydrate-water-vapor (HLV) equilibrium curves for pore hydrates were shifted to the higher-pressure condition depending on pore sizes when compared with those of bulk hydrates. Notably, hydrate phase equilibria for the case of 100 nominal urn pore size were nealy identical with those of bulk hydrates. The activities of water in porous silica gels were modified to account for capillary effect, and the calculation results were generally in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • This study aimed to conduct the basic analysis on the fractal characteristics of cementitious materials. The pore structure of cement paste incorporating ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) was measured using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and the fractal characteristics were investigated using different models. Because the pore structure of GGBFS-blended cement paste is an irregular system in the various range from nanometer to millimeter, the characteristics of pore region in the different scale may not be adequately described when the fractal dimension was calculated over the whole scale range. While Zhang and Li model enabled analyzing the fraction dimension of pore structure over the three divided scale ranges of micro, small capillary and macro regions, Ji el al. model refined analysis on the fractal characteristics of micro pore region consisting of micro I region corresponding to gel pores and micro II region corresponding to small capillary pores. As the pore size decreased, both models suggested that the pore surface of micro region became more irregular than macro region and the complexity of pores increased.

  • When industrial by-products like slag and fly ash are using in concrete with cement, it improves strength and durability against external deterioration factors by densifying the structure through potential hydraulic and pozzolanic reaction. But it has been pointed out that high dependence on the quality variation and the curing condition using a admixure material for concrete. In this study, the characteristics of internal micropore structure according to curing condition were analyzed for pastes and mortar specimens under using blast furnace slag powder. As a result, the variation of compressive strength and the internal microstructure were observed according to curing conditions by binder type. Particularly, using blast furnace slag powder, decrease in compressive strength were clearly observed in indoor and carbonation curing compared with water curing. The pore structure analysis also clearly observed the decrease of the gel pore existing in the CSH hydrate layer and the increase of the capillary pore in indoor and carbonation curing compared with water curing condition.
