To investigate the sleeping patterns and gastrointestinal disorders of shift workers, the author studied 434 female workers who worked at textile industry ill Taejon city from September 1,1992 to September 31,1992. Shift pattern were divided into 3 categories ; 3 shift(shifts per 8 hours), 2 shift(day and night shift) and day work. The results obtained were as follows : 1 The average sleeping hours when adjusted for the education level of the total study subjects was 6.1 hours. That of 3 shift workers was 6.1 hours, 2 shift workers was 6.0 hours, but that of day workers was 6.5 hours. There were no significant difference among the shift workers. 2. For the 3 shift workers, the average physiologic adjusted duration in day shift (2.2 days) was shorter than that of night shift(2.7 days) and there were significant difference among the rotating shift works (p<0.001). The sleeping problems in day shift was less than those of night shift (p<0.001). 3. 44.9% of 3 shift workers, 39.3% of 2 shift workers and 33.1% of day workers complained gastrointestinal symptoms when adjusted for the age, education level, job tenure, work post. And the rates of gastrointestinal symptoms complained increase with job tenures (p<0.001). 4. The most frequent gastrointestinal diseases were gastitis and gastric ulcer with 14.2% , Irritable bowel syndrome with 3.1 %, duodenitis and duodenal ulcer with 2.1% and combined gastrointestinal disease with 2.1%. Age, eating habit, amount of coffee per day, job tenure, work post and shift pattern showed no significant difference with the gastrointestinal diseases when adjusted for the age. According to the above results, the author suggested that the shift pattern and job tenure can affect to the sleeping problem and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to present two case reports on the treatments of psoriasis who has functional gastrointestinal disorder. Methods : We administered herbal medicine to two patients who showed psoriasis with functional gastrointestinal disorder and evaluated the results by Psoriasis Area and Severity Index(PASI).Results : After the treatment two patients showed improvements in PASI. PASI of patient 1 changed from 8.8 to 0.8; patient 2 from 7.0 to 0.2Conclusions : The results suggest that herbal medicine can be an effective treatment for psoriasis who has functional gastrointestinal disorder.
Objective : This study was aimed at investigating the therapeutic effects of acupuncture on gastrointestinal side effect of Levodopa on idiopathic Pakinson's disease patients. Methods : The subjects of this study were 42 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. We divided them into two groups; acupuncture treatment group, no treatment group. We treated the former group with acupuncture therapy focusing on gastrointestinal side effect of Levodopa while administering Levodopa as well. And the latter group was also dosed up with Levodopa without acupuncture therapy. To see the effect of acupuncture treatment clearly, we used gastrointestinal syndrome rating scale (GSRS) and visual analog scale (VAS) and compared the GSRS grade and VAS score of two groups statistically, after 1, 2, 3, 4 weeks since they have been under the treatment. Results : This study suggests that the group who has been treated with acupuncture on gastrointestinal side effect of Levodopa on idiopathic pakinson's disease patients showed higher GSRS grade and VAS score than the one that has not. But, We could't find statistical significance between the two groups on improvement of GSRS grade and VAS score. Conclusions : These results proved that acupucture theraphy might be available for re lieving symptoms related with gastrointestinal side effect of Levodopa than the one that has not. But further studies are necessary.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of lymph node ratio (LNR) in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively enrolled gastric cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and curative surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University from 2004 to 2015 as the study cohort. Patients with the same inclusion criteria treated in 2016-2017 were enrolled as the validation cohort. Kaplan-Meier curves were assessed using the log-rank test to analyze the differences in overall survival (OS). Multivariate survival analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazards model. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of ypN and LNR categories for predicting the actual 3-year OS were compared. Results: A total of 265 patients were included in the proposal cohort. The median number of retrieved lymph nodes (rLNs) was 32. The number of positive lymph nodes (pLNs) increased as rLN increased (P=0.037), but the LNR remained relatively constant (P=0.462). The LNR was categorized into 4 groups according to the prognosis: ypNr0, node-negative with rLN>25; ypNr1, node-negative with rLN≤25 or 00.3. In the validation cohort of 43 enrolled patients, there was a clear distinction in OS that significantly (P<0.001) varied depending on the LNR values and LNR was the only independent prognostic factor in multivariate analysis (P<0.001). Conclusions: LNR was an independent prognostic factor for survival of patients with gastric cancer after preoperative chemotherapy and might be an alternative predictor for ypN stage.
Backgrounds/Aims: Timing of resection for synchronous colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) has been debated for decades. The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility of simultaneous resection of CRLM in terms of major complications and develop a prediction model for safe resections. Methods: A retrospective single-center study of synchronous, resectable CRLM, operated between 2013 and 2021 was conducted. Upper limit of 95% confidence interval (CI) of major complications (≥ grade IIIA) was set at 40% as the safety threshold. Logistic regression was used to determine predictors of morbidity. Prediction model was internally validated by bootstrap estimates, Harrell's C-index, and correlation of predicted and observed estimates. Results: Ninety-two patients were operated. Of them, 41.3% had rectal cancers. Major hepatectomy (≥ 4 segments) was performed for 25 patients (27.2%). Major complications occurred in 20 patients (21.7%, 95% CI: 13.8%-31.5%). Predictors of complications were the presence of comorbidities and major hepatectomy (area under the ROC curve: 0.692). Unacceptable level of morbidity (≥ 40%) was encountered in patients with comorbidities who underwent major hepatectomy. Conclusions: Simultaneous bowel and CRLM resection appear to be safe. However, caution should be exercised when combining major liver resections with bowel resection in patients with comorbid conditions.

Background/Aims: Abexol is a mixture of primary aliphatic alcohols purified from beeswax (Apis mellifera), that produces anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and gastroprotective effects, as well as it is safe and well tolerated. To investigate and compare the efficacy and safety of Abexol (suspension versus tablets) in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms. Methods: Monocentric study, open-label, randomized design, with two parallel groups receiving Abexol tablets (150 mg/d) or Abexol suspension (75 mg/d) for 8 weeks. Primary efficacy variable (significant improvement in the total score of Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale [GSRS]). Significant reduction in the intensity of the gastrointestinal-symptoms and the reduction in the consumption of antacids are considered secondary efficacy variable. Short form-36 (SF-36) quality of life questionnaire was evaluated as collateral variable. Data were analyzed as per intention to treat. Results: A significantly decrease in the overall score of the survey was observed with respect to the baseline level (p < 0.001) of 81.4% in the Abexol suspension group and 77.9% in the Abexol tablets group. At the end of the trial, most gastrointestinal-symptoms disappeared or reduced significantly. The frequency of consumption of neutralizing antacids was low. The significantly improvement in the perception of the state of health obtained in the Abexol is in correspondence with the improvement achieved in some of the components evaluate in the SF-36 questionnaire. Both treatments were safe and well tolerated. Conclusions: Abexol suspension showed efficacy and safety similar to Abexol tablets in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, but using half the dose.
Objectives: Since we found patients with dyspepsia as their major symptom had high rate of headache, would like to find out a rational diagnosis ground by using EAV correlation between headache and gastrointestinal disorder Methods: We did survey and EAV inspection on 128 patients came by gastrointestinal disorder who quoted 4 and 5 degree for their headache symptoms) Results & Conclusion The results of this study were as follows: 1. From dyspepsia, we saw higher rate by order of epigastric discomfort, bloating, stomach trouble, bleching, etc. 2. By EAV analysis, found functional deterioration by order of stomach, nerval degeneration vessel, gall bladder/bile duct, liver. 3. By EAV analysis, functional deterioration of stomach, gall bladder/bile duct, liver represent dyspepsia and nerval degeneration vessel represent headache. We found the correlation between dyspepsia and headache by observation at a time.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to compare prescriptions of gastrointestinal diseases from Soauibang and Donguibogam, by analyzing the prescription formula of the herbal medicines that were added or removed in Soauibang. This process will also help to analyze the view of disease states of the authors from Soauibang and Donguibogam, based on the results. Methods 122 prescriptions for gastrointestinal diseases from Soauibang were selected and analyzed based on indications. The difference between the contents of the prescriptions from Soauibang and Donguibogam were analyzed. Results According to the Soauibang prescriptions, the herb that rectifies Qi, which releases the exterior and transform dampness were frequently added in the prescription. Conclusions The author of the Soauibang frequently used herbs that rectifies Qi and a root of Zingiber officinale Roscoe to improve digestive function, and use less of the Zizyphus jujube and Glycyrrhiza uralensis, which can cause digestive disorders when used excessively. in the prescription formula for the gastrointestinal diseases.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate job stress and job satisfaction among nurses in gastrointestinal endoscopy units, and factors related to their job stress and job satisfaction. Methods: The study participants were 153 nurses working in gastrointestinal endoscopy units at eleven general hospitals. Job stress and job satisfaction were measured using nurses's job stress scale and the index of work satisfaction respectively. Results: The average job stress was 3.67 (range 1~5) and job satisfaction was 2.90 (range 1~5). Gastrointestinal endoscopy unit nurses, who were full time worker, having more than 7 years of clinical experiences, having higher incomes, having high subjective work-intensity, and having an intention to change their working units, showed greater job stresses than those of the others. There were significant differences in job satisfaction according to subjective health status, the types of employment, subjective work-intensity, subjective aptitude, intention to change working units, major nursing tasks, and the numbers of major nursing tasks. Also, the subjects's job stress showed a negative correlation with job satisfaction. Conclusion: Findings suggest that management strategies should be developed to increase job satisfaction focusing on general and job characteristics associated with job stress.
(Backgrounds) This study was performed to evaluate the usefulness of red ginseng ex rant as adjuvant therapeutic agent improving immune function in immune compromizing gas-trointestinal carcinoma patient. (Material and Methods) We were treated 72 patients with two groups after we were undertaken the curative resection for gastrointestinal carcinoma; 1) only chemotherapy and immunotherapy (control group) 2) chemotherapy and immunotherapy with 4500 mg (15 tablets) red ginseng for 6 months (study group). For investigating the immunologic alternations alongside the numerical changes in peripheral blood Iymphocyte and their subsets in the gastrolntestinal carcinoma patients, Iymphocyte surface markers were determined by monoclonal antibodies on the preoperative day, postoperative 1 months, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months and 18 months in 40 controls and 32 red ginseng groups In gastrointestinal carcinoma patients which was recruited at Korea diversity Hospital from March, 1995 to January, 1997. The patient was measured and compared in both groups with the body weight, total protein and albumin, blood hematocrit and hemoglobin, total leukocyte, lymphocyte and lymphocyte subsets count in peripheral blood through planed schedules. (Couclusion) This data suggests that red ginseng may be useful as a adjuvant therapeutic agent for improving the immune function after curative operation for immune compromizing gastrointestinal carcinoma patients. Key words : Ginseng, Immunity, Gastrointestlnal carcinoma patients.
