  • This paper deals with the study on repair case of journal shaft and bearing damage in 25MW industrial gas turbine caused by sudden blackout, operation mistake, and logic abnormal, etc. When a serious accident such as journal and bearing damage in a gas turbine occurs, the domestic local companies having the gas turbine are dependent on manufacturer for all maintenance and repair schedule until now. This case study shows that the damaged gas turbine is normally re-operated itself in domestic by establishing repair schedule in a short period of time, repairing damage journal shaft and tilting pad bearings, and performing rotating test for a reliability check. This paper can be regarded as the important case study of emergency test run experience of the refurbished 25MW gas turbine rotor.

  • The present study was aimed at analysing the damage of a used gas turbine bucket after 39,500h of total service. Microstructures and cracks of service-induced bucket were observed. The crack might have initiated from the coating in the bucket surface by thermal fatigue and propagated into the GTD111 base metal. Maximum depth of penetration was 2.7 mm(full penetration) at the leading edge. Crack contains a lot of Cr-,Ti-,Al-oxide which will prohibit filling and wetting of insert metal. Depth and propagation direction of crack were accorded with centrifugal force and temperature distribution in turbine bucket. Present result will provide basic data for repair bonding process.

  • The use of the gas turbine for power supply is increasing recently. Accordingly, the operation and maintenance cost of the gas turbine is gradually increasing and the various efforts to cut the cost are needed. For an operation and maintenance cost saving of the gas turbine, reductions of the new purchasing charge and the reproduction repair cost of the hot gas parts are required through more effective operation and life management methods for the hot gas parts. The hot gas parts are the main parts of the gas turbine and they are replaced with the periodic. In this research, efficient operation and life management methods for the hot gas parts were presented with the cases. The methods were analyzed and verified based on real data and the cases for improving a lifetime were utilized in the field.

  • High-temperature components of gas turbine operated for certain period of time can be reused by being repaired or rejuvenated. In case of the gas turbine combustion liners, the biggest and the most important one in the high-temperature components, come in a repair shop after operated for 8,000 or 12,000 hours according to the model and go through the repair and rejuvenation in order to be reused. A stated combustion liner is the first channel which has the combustion gas reached a nozzle from a fuel nozzle. Materials and coating properties of old and new model combustion liners were investigated. To repair these components after the visual inspection, the coatings of combustion liners were removed and then FPI(Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection), a kind of the NDI(Non-Destructive Inspection), was conducted. Damage patterns and the number of the damaged components were classified and analyzed based on data provided from the visual inspection over a long period of time. Focusing on the difference between old model and new model combustion liners, we analyzed the damage distribution and changes and consequently concluded that new model combustion liner would increase repair rate.

  • The gas turbine components is used on high temperature conditions which under severely circumstance with start-up and stop several times. Therefore, it is used nickel-base superalloys like and GTD-111DS. Damaged buckets on the t긴ade tip during operating are repaired per 24,000 hr to three times according to repair specification of manufacture. It is applied pre-heat, HIP(hot isostatic pressing) and post-heat treatment to support welding repair on blade tip effectively. On this study, It is utilize of $WRAP^{TM}$ (welding repair advanced process) method to make tension test specimens for this study, And then, material strength and characteristic for GTD-111DS was analyzed.

  • As the capacity of renewable power generation facilities rapidly increases, the variability of electric power system and gas turbine power generation is also increasing. Therefore, problems may occur that require urgent repair while the gas turbine rotor is stopped. When the gas turbine rotor turning is stopped and then restarted, if the turning period is not appropriate, severe vibration may occur due to rotor bending. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that normal operation is possible when the gap data measured at the start of rotor turning after maintenance work is similar to the existing value. And the vibration value at the start of rotor turning was lower as the rotor temperature was lower or the stop period was shorter.

  • The engine parts material used in gas turbines (GTs) should be resistant to high-temperature variations. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for gas turbine blades are found to have a significant effect on prolonging the life cycle of turbine blades by providing additional heat resistance. This work is to study the performance of TBCs on the high-temperature environment of the turbine blades. It is understood that this coating will increase the lifecycles of blade parts and decrease maintainence and repair costs. Experiments were performed on the gas turbine blade to see the effect of TBCs in different combinations of materials through the air plasma method. Three-layered coatings using materials INCONEL 718 as base coating, NiCoCrAIY as middle coating, and La2Ce2O7 as the top coating was applied. Finite element analysis was performed using a two-dimensional method to optimize the suitable formulation of coatings on the blade. Temperature distributions for different combinations of coatings layers with different materials and thickness were studied. Additionally, three-dimensional thermal stress analysis was performed on the blade with a commercial code. Results on the effect of TBCs shows a significant improvement in thermal resistance compared to the uncoated gas turbine blade.

  • The first stage rotating blade of industrial gas turbine is one of the components that is normally run in exposed state at the highest temperature of the combustion gas stream. For this reason superior materials and advanced cooling technology are required to allow higher heat resisting characteristics of the component. The 1st stage blade of a selected commercial gas turbine blade made of directionally solidified Ni-based superalloy has a row of cooling holes on its trailing edge. In most cases, minor cracks have been found at some of the root cooling holes after one cycle operation (24,000 hrs) or even shorter operation time because of the high temperature gradient and the frequently alternating thermal stress. In the repair process, unfortunately, it is usually very difficult to get rid of the damage due to the fact that cracks are initiated at the root cooling hole and propagated deep into the hole. In this study, the feasibility of removing the sidewall cracks in the hole by utilizing EDM drilling has been investigated. Also the criteria of surface integrity for EDM drilling were established to achieve high quality repair as well as machining accuracy.

  • The 1st stage bucket of the 170MW simple cycle gas turbine is one of the components that is normally run in exposed state at the highest thermally stressful environment while the turbine is operating. After certain period operation, various type of damages are easily found and the damages are identified as due to the turbine operating mode of which the demand of the electricity power is very peaking and cyclic. Since this trend is more evident at some part of power plants in Korea and it has caused higher scrap rate of the bucket at the first repair interval than other country. Therefore, demand for the higher capability and alternative technologies which allow salvaging more buckets and preventing from severe damages is always high. In this study, a review and estimation of the repair technologies for the past 5 years to present have been conducted and show results.
