MODELING FAILURE MECHANISM OF DESIGNED-TO-FAIL PARTICLE FUEL

  • A model to predict failure of designed-to-fail (dtf) fuel particles is discussed. The dtf fuel under study consisted of a uranium oxycarbide kernel coated with a single pyrocarbon seal coat. Coating failure was assumed to be due to fission gas recoil and knockout mechanisms and direct diffusive release of fission gas from the kernel, which acted to increase pressure and stress in the pyrocarbon layer until it ruptured. Predictions of dtf fuel failure using General Atomics' particle fuel performance code for HRB-17/18 and HFR-B1 irradiation tests were reasonably accurate; however, the model could not predict the failure for COMEDIE BD-1. This was most likely due to insufficient information on reported particle fuel failure at the beginning.

  • In this study a general Galerkin FE lubrication analysis method for the compressible Reynolds equation in cylindrical coordinates is presented. Then, the method is applied for analyzing lubrication performances of spiral groove dry gas seals. The effects of toning and number of groove on performance indices are evaluated at low and high rotating speeds: 3,600 and 15,000 rpm. Results show that, for the primary design consideration performances such as the opening force and axial and angular stiffnesses, a negative or small coning and a large number of groove are preferred.

  • Performance demonstration with real flawed specimens has been strongly required for nondestructive evaluation of safety class components in nuclear power plant. Specimen has been designed to produce mechanical fatigue flaw with tension stress and fatigue flaw has been produced to control stress and cycle, for suitable roughness. Notch condition is considered for control of fracture mode. After seal welding for fracture surface, final welding was performed to complete flaw specimen with GTAW(Gas Tungsten Arc welding) and FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Welding). It was demonstrated flaw size of flawed specimen by radiographic. testing and ultrasonic testing.

Air Jet Effect on Performance Improvement of Non-Contact Type Seals for Oil Mist Lubrication Systems (공기분사가 오일미스트 윤활 시스템용 비접촉 시일의 성능 향상에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently, high performance machining center requires special type of sealing mechanism that prevent a leakage of oil jet or oil mist lubrication system. Sealing of oil-air mixture plays important r oles to have an enhanced lubrication for performance machining center. Current work emphasizes on investigations of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve sealing capabilities of conventional labyrinth seals, air jet is injected against the leakage flow. In this study, an adapted model is introduced to improve sealing capability of conventional non-contact type seals. It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. Both of a numerical analysis by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement. The sealing effects of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude aic studied in various parameters. Gas or liquid has been used as a working fluid for most of nori-contact types seals including the labyrinth seal. However, it is more reasonable to regard two-phase flows because oil mist or oil jet are used for high performance spindle's lubrication. In this study, working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil and air phase. Both of turbulence and compressible flow model are also introduced in a CFD analysis to represent an isentropic process. Estimation of non-leaking property is determined by amount of pressure drop in the leakage path. Results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient. Effect of the sealing improvement is explained as decreasing of leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger

Study of Seal-off Triggered Vacuum Switch(TVS) for High Voltage and High Current (고전압 대전류용, Seal-off TVS(Triggered Vacuum Switch) 연구)

  • The purpose of this experiment was to develope Triggered Vacuum Switch (TVS) for the high voltage and high current. The TVS has an array of rods of alternate polarity in which a fixed gap spacing is maintained between the rods. The cross section of each rod has trapezoidal shape. It consists of electrode, ceramic chamber, getter and trigger. Currently, triggered vacuum switch (TVS) with seal-off has been designed and fabricated at PAL. An experimentation and trigger devices for TVS were designed for testing characteristics of electricity. For making the prototype of TVS, it is developed of fabrication process and fined of electrode material. The fabrication of the TVS is a lot of process which have manufacturing of part, chemical clean, ceramic brazing and metal welding. The fabricated TVS is tested of leak for vacuum, hold-off voltage and conditioning of trigger system. The TVS has pinch-off after it is removed of gas in the TVS and activated of getter in degassing furnace. The prototype TVS tested about 20 kV, 75 kA, 83 ${\mu}s$ with 100 kJ capacitor bank and inductance 5 ${\mu}H$. This paper describes the results of tests and the characteristics of the switch.

  • We examined the properties of compound and made compound of the optimum state using the properties of each material to evaluate suitability of FKM, VMQ, EPDM, NBR with gasket for fuel cell which is in general use with the material of gasket. It could be found from the compound made with setting the optimum state that NBR is worse than FKM in the chemical property of matter for a long term, and VMQ is worse than FKM in the elution of a metal ion, and EPDM is worse than FKM in the permeability of gas. As a result of leak evaluation of gasket for fuel cell with using FKM, it appeared leak in short time when contracting pressure is getting lower and sealing pressure is getting higher. And as a result of the life prediction with using Arrhenius model, we could predict that it is possible to continuously drive for 60,000 hours.

  • Effects of operating variables on solid circulation rate were measured and discussed using two-interconnected circulating fluidized bed system at ambient temperature and pressure. OCN 706-1100 particles were used as oxygen carrier. The measured solid circulation rates increased as the lower loop seal gas flow rates and the solid height in the fuel reactor increased. Suitable operating conditions to avoid choking of the air reactor were confirmed. Continuous long-term operations of steady-state solid circulation were also demonstrated at two different conditions based on the operating window.

  • The present paper describes the first development of a LOX/kerosene type turbopump in Korea. The liquid rocket engine, that the turbopump can be applied to, has a 30-ton(metric) level of vacuum thrust and employs a gas generator cycle. The turbopump consists of two single-stage centrifugal pumps, that is, LOX and kerosene pumps, and one single-stage impulse turbine. Inter-propellant seal(IPS) is located between the LOX pump and the kerosene pump to avoid any interaction between the propellants. A series of component and TPU(Turbopump Unit) test has been completed in the level of simulant propellants and ready for hot firing tests.
