Rubber particles emitted from automobile tire tread by abrasion were collected by Andersen sampler with atmospheric dusts. The samples of atmospheric dusts at each stage were analysed for rubber particles by Curie point pyrolysis-gas chromatography with Apiezon grease L column. Pyrolysis was done at 740$^circ$C for 5 seconds. In the pyrogram, NR rubber (bus and truck tire tread) was determined by isoprene peak, and SBR rubber (passenger car tire tread) was determined by styrene peak simultaneously. The size distribution of rubber particles was proportioned with the size of rubber particles. The concentrations of NR and SBR rubber were 0.23 $\mug/m^3$ and 1.31 $\mug/m^3$, respectively, in the atmospheric dusts which were collected from the street in front of Yonsei University on April 1986. The ratio of tire tread rubber in the atmospheric dusts was about 0.63%.
Thermal desorption/gas chromatography/mass selective detection method using Tenax cartridges for the determination of gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH) is described. Glass fiber filter can collect only PAH in particulate. Gaseous PAH may penetrate the filter. Glass cartridge packed Tenax-GC was uses fur adsorption of gaseous PAH. The air of inhalation zone was collected fur 2-10 hours. Cartridges were thermally desorbed in the reverse direction to sample flow. The desorption conditions were as follows; desorption temperature; $300^{\circ}C$; desorption time; 20min; column head pressure; 30psi; inlet split vent; closed during desorption.
A novel simple method to detect vitamins in cosmetic products by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) has been developed. Three vitamins(panthenol, cholecalciferol and tocopherol) were used for this study. Vitamins were prepared by dissolving in tetrahydrofuran(THF), and silylated with bis-trimethylsilyltrifluoroacetamide-trichloromethylsilane(BSTFA). Silated vitamins were separated on a fuses-silica capillary column coated with DB-5. The identification of each vitamin was accomplished by retention time and mass spectrum library search with a computer, and the quantitation was made in the selected-ion monitoring(SIM) mode of GC-MS. SIM mode had given sensitivity to determine 50pg of panthenol, 285pg of cholecalciferol and 130pg of tocopherol. Linearity was maintained over the range 0.005-0.20% for each vitamin. Each cosmetic product(i.e. hair tonic and lotion) was found to contain amounts of the vitamins. This method was sensitive and gave 77.5-99.9% recovery of each vitamin from these cosmetic products. From these results, we concluded that silylation with BSTFA followed by GC-MS analysis allows the simple, covenient and exact determination of panthenol, cholecalciferol and tocopherol.
A gas chromatography/mass spectrometric assay method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of icing inhibitors, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether in ground water contaminated with JP-8. Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether were used as the internal standard and surrogate, respectively. 100 mL of ground water was extracted twice with 20 mL of methylene chloride. The extract was concentrated to dryness, dissolved with 100 ${\mu}$L of methanol and analyzed by GC-MS (SIM). The use of an Innowax column gave the peaks good chromatographic properties, and the extraction of these compounds from samples gave recoveries of about 50% with small variations. The method detection limits of the target compounds were in a range of 0.5-0.8 ng/mL in ground water.
The resolution of N-trifluoroacetyl (N-TFA) ter-isopropylesters of Ala, Ile, Leu, Val and Phe by gas chromatography on the (S)-5-isobutyl-$N^3$-phenyl-2-thiohydantoin as stationary phase was investigated. The phase was employed at several column temperatures $(140^{\circ}C{\sim}200^{\circ}C)$ and the separation factors were $1.18{\sim}1.45$ range for five amino acid enantiomers. The possible mechanism of chiral recognition was investigated by NMR technique and the association constant$(K_c)$ was calculated as 201.3(r=0.98) for alanyl derivative.
A new method of determination of fatty acid using gas chromatography-flame photometric detector (GC-FPD) is described. Fatty acid was methylthiomethyl-esterified with methylthiomethy chloride in 1,8-diazabicyclo [5,4,0]-undec-7-ene catalyst and its concentration measured by GC-FPD with 3%OV-1 or 3% FS-1 column. The FPD responses of thirteen fatty acid methylthiomethyl esters were examined and were proportional to the concentration of the esters without regard to their chemical structures. Consequently it was possible to determine various fatty acid using one standard calibration curve by GC-FPD. We could rapidly and conveniently determine varous fatty acids using one standard calibration curve by GC-FPD. We could rapidly and conveniently determine 13 fatty acids in Ginseng Radix alba by this method.
A sensitive method for the determination of methamphetamine(MA) and amphetamine(AM) in hair was developed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry using stable isotope-labeled internal standards, amphetamine-d$_{5}$ and methamphetamine-d$_{5}$. Hair sample was washed with MeOH, incubated with MeOH(I% HCI) overnight at $37^{\circ}C$ while stirring and extracted using solid phase extraction column on a vacuum manifold. The extract obtained was pentafluoropropionated, and applied to GC/MS. The calibration curves of MA and AM were linear from 2.5 to 250 ng (r>0.99 for both). The limit of detection was 0.1 ng/mg in hair and cut-off level was set at 0.25 ng/mg for both. Hair samples of 27 MA abusers showed positive results in the range 0.7 to 106.8 ng/mg. AM, its metabolite, was detected in 20 out of 27 samples. The ratio of MA versus AM was 4.6~38.3 in specimens. Hair analysis for methamphetamine by GC/MS is an effective method for identifying long-term drug abusers.
Rubber articles contain various organic additives such as antidegradants, curing agents, and processing aids. It is important to extract and analyze these organic additives. In this paper, various extraction methods of organic additives present in rubber composites were introduced (solvent extraction, Soxhlet extraction, headspace extraction, and solid-phase microextraction), and the extracts were characterized using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Solvent and Soxhlet extractions are easy-to-perform and commonly used methods. Efficiency of solvent extraction varies according to the type of solvent used and the extraction conditions. Soxhlet extraction requires a large volume of solvent. Headspace sampling is suitable for extracting volatile organic compounds, while solid-phase extraction is suitable for extracting specific chemicals. GC/MS is generally used for characterizing the extract of a rubber composite because most components of the extract are volatile and have low molecular weights. Identification methods of chemical structures of the components separated by GC column were also introduced.
