Purpose: The measure the degree of computer game addiction; to examine the relationship between computer game addiction and contributing factors; and to discover the predictors of computer game addiction of elementary school children of Korea. Method: Data were assembled from questionnaires distributed among 455 children from four elementary schools in Gyung-buk Province. Result: The level of computer game addiction of subjects was rather low, and correlated significantly with gender, academic performance, family economic status, playmates for leisure time, place of playing computer game, length of the habit of playing game, average playing time of game per day, frequency of PC-room(Internet Cafe for game) visits per week, game partners and reasons for playing game. Multiple regression analysis showed that 45% of the computer game addiction was significantly related to gender(21%), impulsiveness(10%), average playing time of game per day(9%), depression(2%) and other variables(3%) such as playmates for leisure time, academic performance and frequency of PC-room visits per week. Conclusion: We suggest these results be used to develop a computer game addiction prevention program.
In Korea, a lot of people think that the more students spend time in playing game, the more students get their grade lower. So that, parents of students don't want their children play games. But there are few research about the relationship between the playing time of game and a grade of students. Therefore, this research would find the relationship between the playing time of game and students' grade. In result, there is no relationship between the game playing time of a students and the student's grade. A game addict who play game a lot of time a day could have lower grade. But for normal user of game, there is no relationship between the game playing time and the grade.
Social network games (SNGs), a rapidly growing online game genre, are built and played on social network sites. SNGs provide an online world for enjoying leisure time and interpersonal communication, and an increasing numbers of college students are involved in such game-playing as a leisure time activity. Despite the popularity, relatively few studies have been conducted to investigate the nature of game players, especially the meaning of such leisure time behavior by college students. This paper's aim was to explore a subjective meaning structure of online social network game play. The means-end chain model was used to link attributes of SNGs to the underlying values of game playing as a leisure activity. The results revealed two emerging end-values: the need for bridging and a sense of belonging. This study sheds light on the meaning of college students' leisure activities when playing social network games.
This study aimed at understanding motivations and effects of online game playing of adolescents related to quality of life. The field survey was administered to 836 $4^{th}-12^{th}$ grade students in their classrooms. Findings showed that the 5 critical motivations for playing online games were : attraction to the game characters, entertainment, avoidance, loneliness, and killing-time. Motivations differed by sex and grade in school. Quality of life was related to the motivations for online game playing and to the feelings of satisfaction obtained after playing online games. Implications of these findings were discussed from the perspective of policy for the information welfare of adolescents.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the temporal and spatial characteristics of mobile games through Mikhail Bakhtin's chronotope concept in order to examine the changes of mobile games and gaming. Based on chronotope, a concept that refers to the inner relation between time and space reproduced in the novel, I examined the inner relation between the space - time experience in the mobile game platform and the reconstruction of the mobile game text. The mobile game builds the present-here world based on the player's will while superimposing the act of playing through the mixed platform of existence based on the player with the time and space of everyday life. The chronotope of a mobile game with players as platforms is created in the current space of now-here rather than connecting to the virtual world. In this paper, I review the role of chronotope reproduction in mobile games, focusing on role-playing games and location based games. In the mobile role-playing game, an unhistorical chronotope appears in which the player has a loose sense of distance around the automatic combat system, while the narrative and relational experience is weakened. In a location-based game, a chronotope of player-driven generation that generates amusing meanings through the overlap of the virtual world and the real world appears.

As today's "ninth art", role-playing games recognized by most players due to their surreal themes and sustained reflection on social diseases. Through precise control of story-telling and game visuals, players develop an avatar identification during role-playing game. Based on Lacan's mirror stage theory, a new self-identity mechanism is established under the guidance of role-playing games. As a "player", the subject's interpretation of himself is shifted by the game order, and the subject identifies with the role-playing game while at the same time being structured by the desire of role-playing game. The immersive experience and emotional guidance of role-playing games all point to the most instinctive human desires. The psychoanalytic theory from Lacan's perspective explains the source of players' desire, and the expression of players' desire in the game. It also plays an important role in the emotional rendering and identity aspects of role-playing games. This paper is to establish that role-playing games do have an impact on the player's self-identity through a Lacanian psychoanalytic reading of role-playing games.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a group training program designed to control the desire for internet games and to promote self-efficacy and alternative activities. The subjects participating in this study were 32 fifth graders, divided into the experimental group of 16 and the control group of 16, who were carefully selected from 175 children in the fifth grade in S elementary school in J city. All the subjects belong in the top 20% according to the internet game addiction level and spend more than two hours and thirty minutes a day playing computer game. And they participated in the game desire control program, which were consisted of total eight-session' treatment for six weeks. The results of the game addiction diagnosis and self-efficacy measurement were verified and analyzed by ANOVA to verify the effects of the program. As well as, data about average playing time spent on computer games and time the children spent on playing computer games alternative activities were analyzed and collected by the interview and other written materials such as letters from the parents to their children and writings of the children on their feelings about interret games. The results of this study were as follows: The internet game control program was effective in decreasing the degree of game addiction. The children participating in the internet game control program showed greater increase in self-efficacy than those of the control group. The children participating in the program showed a sharp decline in the time spent on playing computer games and greater increase in the time spent on alternative activities than those of the control group.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the time spent on violent internet games and game overindulgence on aggressive behavior exhibited by elementary school-aged boys and to investigate the mediating effects of self-control on the relationship between children's game overindulgence and their aggressive behavior. The subjects of this study were 118 fourth to sixth grade boys from five elementary schools. The instruments used were the aggression subscale of the Korean-Youth Self Report (Oh, Ha, Lee, & Hong, 2001), a questionnaire of the time spent playing violent internet games developed by the authors, the Internet Game Addiction Scale for Children (Kim, Lee, Kim, Kim, & Kim, 2006) and the Self-Control Scale (Nam, 1999). The data were analyzed by means of a Structural Equation Model (SEM). The results were as follows. First, children's self-control mediated the relationship between game overindulgence and aggressive behavior. Second, the amount of time spent playing violent internet games had no effect on children's aggressive behavior.

Objectives : The object of this study was to examine computer game playing patterns and psychopathologies related to computer game addiction in school-age children. Methods : The subjects were 533 elementary school students (4th to 6th grade) in Kangdonggu, Seoul. We evaluated computer playing patterns of all subjects using computer game playing pattern questionnaire, and determined the risk group of computer game addiction by internet game addiction scale score. We evaluated subscale score of K-CBCL from parents of all subjects, and conducted correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis between computer game addiction and subscale score of K-CBCL. Results : In 488 responders, 10.2% of started playing computer game in preschool age, and 67.2% started at low grade of elementary school. The mean frequency of computer game play per week was 3.66 days. Mean time spent playing computer games per day was 1.89 hours. 'Simply for fun' was the most common reason far playing computer games (40.8%). Male subjects showed statistically significant differences in age of starting computer game, frequency of computer game play per week, reasons for playing computer game and computer game addiction scale scores. There were significant correlations between computer game addiction scale scores and academic performance, somatic complaints, attention problems, and internalizing problems in K-CBCL. But In logistic regression analysis, only attention problems among K-CBCL subscales showed significant predictability to computer game addiction. Conclusion : Upper grade elementary school students experienced computer game playing at the very early age, and spend much time in playing computer games. There were significant correlation and predictability between computer game addiction and attention problems.
