IAn Automatic Measurement Method for the Galaxy Disk Warp and its Application to SDSS Stripe 82 Galaxies

  • The galaxy disk warp is a common phenomenon, yet their properties and formation mechanism(s) are still unclear. Here, we introduce a new automatic measurement method for the warp properties of stellar disks in nearby edge-on galaxies, including warp's angle, shape, and asymmetry. We obtain isophotal maps of edge-on galaxies and express each of isophote contours in polar coordinates (${\Phi}$, R) centered on the galaxy centers. Two peaks in the ${\Phi}$-R diagram correspond to the outermost tips of each isophote. The locations of peaks, in turn, inform us of the misalignment between their inner and outer galactic planes, i.e., the warp. We apply this method to SDSS Stripe 82 co-added data and discuss its reliability and validity. Based on the measurement of warp properties, we also investigate their correlations with both intrinsic and environmental properties of warped galaxies.

Testing Gravitational Weak-lensing Maps with Galaxy Redshift Surveys: preliminary results

  • To measure the mass distribution of galaxy systems weak-lensing analysis has been widely used because it directly measures the total mass of a system regardless of its baryon content and dynamical state. However, the weak-lensing only provides a map of projected surface mass density. On the other hand, galaxy redshift surveys provide a map of the three-dimensional galaxy distribution. It thus can resolve the structures along the line of sight projected in the weak-lensing map. Therefore, the comparison of structures identified in the weak-lensing maps and in the redshift surveys is an important test of the issues limiting applications of weak-lensing to the identification of galaxy clusters. Geller et al. (2010) and Kurtz et al. (2012) compared massive clusters identified in a dense redshift survey with significant weak-lensing map convergence peaks. Both assessments of the efficiency of weak-lensing map for cluster identification did not draw a general conclusion, because the sample is so small. Thus, we additionally perform deep imaging observations of fields in a dense galaxy redshift survey that contain galaxy clusters at z~0.2-0.5, using CFHT Megacam.

PANORAMIC VIEWS OF GALAXY CLUSTER EVOLUTION: GALAXY ECOLOGY

  • Taking the great advantage of Subaru's wide field coverage both in the optical and in the near infrared, we have been providing panoramic views of distant clusters and their surrounding environments over the wide redshift range of 0:4 < z < 3. From our unique data sets, a consistent picture has been emerging that the star forming activity is once enhanced and then truncated in galaxy groups in the outskirts of clusters during the course of cluster assembly at z < 1. Such activity is shifted into cluster cores as we go further back in time to z ~ 1.5. At z = 2 - 2.5, we begin to enter the epoch when massive galaxies are actually forming in the cluster core. And by z ~ 3, we eventually go beyond the major epoch of massive galaxy formation. It is likely that the environmental dependence of star forming activity is at least partly due to the external environmental effects such as galaxy-galaxy interaction in medium density regions at z < 1, while the intrinsic effect of galaxy formation bias overtakes the external effect at higher redshifts, resulting in a large star formation activity in the cluster center.

Hearts of Darkness: Rethinking the Role of Supermassive Black Holes in Galaxy Evolution

  • While astronomers are working hard to detect the earliest galaxies and to follow their evolution to redshift z~0, they remain baffled by the present-day dichotomy between disky, star forming (aka late-type) galaxies and quiescent, spheroidal (aka early-type) galaxies. The key is to find galaxies in transition from one class to the other, whose spectra indicate intense recent star formation that has now ended. We have identified thousands of such "post-starburst galaxies" and discovered that they are often the products of late-type galaxy-galaxy mergers. Their current kinematics, stellar populations, and morphologies are consistent with late- to early-type galaxy evolution. I will discuss recent work that suggests new connections between this violent history and the central supermassive black hole. In particular, the molecular gas reservoir of a post-starburst galaxy declines rapidly after the starburst ends and in a manner consistent with feedback from an active nucleus. Furthermore, a star is ~300x more likely to be tidally disrupted by the nucleus of a post-starburst galaxy than in other galaxies. Like the well-known black hole-bulge mass correlation, these surprising links between the properties of a galaxy on kpc scales and its supermassive black hole on pc scales require explanation.

Newly discovered Footprints of Galaxy Interaction around Sefert 2 galaxy NGC 7743

  • It has been suggested that only the most luminous AGNs ($L{\geq}$ [10] $^{45}L_{\odot}$ ) are triggered by galaxy mergers, while less luminous AGNs (L~ [10] $^{43}L_{\odot}$) are driven by other internal processes. Lack of merging features in low luminosity AGN host galaxies has been a main argument against the idea of merger triggering of low luminosity AGNs, but merging, especially a rather minor one, might still have played an important role in low luminosity AGNs since minor merging features in low luminosity are more difficult to identify than major merging features. Using SNUCAM on the 1.5m telescope at Madanak observatory, we obtained deep images of NGC 7743 which is a barred spiral galaxy classified as a Seyfert 2 AGN with a low bolometric luminosity of $5{\times}$ [10] $^{42}L_{\odot}$. Surprisingly, we newly discovered merging features around the galaxy, which indicate past merging activity on the galaxy. This example indicates the merging fraction of low luminosity AGNs may be much higher than previously thought, hinting the importance of galaxy merger even in low luminosity AGN.

IMPACT OF NEIGHBORS IN SDSS GALAXY PAIRS

  • How galaxies are affected by their neighboring galaxies during galaxy-galaxy interactions is a long-standing question. We investigate the role of neighbors in galaxy pairs based on the SDSS data release 7 and the KIAS value-added galaxy catalog. Three groups of galaxies are identified: (a) galaxies with an early-type neighbor, (b) with a late-type neighbor, and (c) isolated ones with no neighbor. We compare their UV + optical colors and $H{\alpha}$ emission as indicators of the recent star-formation rate (SFR). Given that galaxies show systematic differences in SFR as functions of morphology, luminosity, and large-scale environments, we construct a control sample in which the galaxies have the same conditions (in terms of morphology, luminosity, and large-scale environment) except for the neighbor's properties (i.e., morphology, mass, and distance). The results are as follows. (1) Galaxies with a late-type companion demonstrate more enhanced SFR than those with an early-type companion. (2) Galaxies with an early-type neighbor show NUV- and u-band derived SFRs that are even lower than that of isolated galaxies, while they have similar or slightly higher $H{\alpha}$-based SFR compared to isolated ones.

Chandra Archival Survey of Galaxy Clusters: X-ray Point Sources in Cool-core and Non-cool-core Clusters

  • We have studied the physical properties of X-ray point sources in galaxy clusters using ~600 Chandra archival observations. The goal of this study is to investigate the density environmental effects on the physical properties of X-ray point sources by comparing the properties of X-ray point sources in galaxy clusters to those in typical blank fields. In this presentation, we show the nature of X-ray point sources which are expected to be related with galaxy clusters with different core properties. Using ~60 galaxy clusters observed with Chandra, we investigate the physical properties of X-ray point sources in cool-core and non-cool-core clusters. The cool-core clusters are known to have short central cooling time, and are characterized by low central entropy, systematic central temperature drops, and a brightest cluster galaxy at the X-ray peak. While the non-cool-core clusters have longer central cooling time, and are characterized by large central entropies and flat or centrally rising temperature profile. We show that how central core properties of galaxy clusters affect on the physical properties of X-ray point sources.

The Optical and IR Properties of Peculiar early-type galaxies from Stripe82 and WISE Data

  • Galaxy merging plays a important role to the formation and evolution of galaxy. Early-type galaxies are believed to be formed by galaxy merging. We combined 3 color images in g,r,i band using Stripe82 image of which the surface brightness is 2 mag deeper than that of SDSS image. We classified early-type galaxies which have the merging features, the evidence of galaxy mergers through careful visual inspection. We investigated the IR properties of early-type galaxies with the merging feature using WISE data. We analyzed the star formation according to the type of galaxy. Early-type galaxies with the merging feature show the higher star formation than non-merging galaxies, but the difference is not significant. This results implies that quite a few early-type galaxies might be formed by dry merger, not wet merger. Meanwhile, the most of ULIRGs show tidal tail, on the other hand, early-type galaxies show tidal tail including shell structure. It suggests that ULIRGs have more gas and it might be in early stage of galaxy merging, early-type galaxies might be in the late stage of galaxy merging.

Constraints on cosmology and baryonic feedback by the combined analysis of weak lensing and galaxy clustering with the Deep Lens Survey

  • We constrain cosmological parameters by combining three different power spectra measured from galaxy clustering, galaxy-galaxy lensing, and cosmic shear using the Deep Lens Survey (DLS). Two lens bins (centered at z~0.27 and 0.54) and two source bins (centered at z~0.64, and 1.1) containing more than one million galaxies are selected to measure the power spectra. We re-calibrate the initial photo-z estimation of the lens bins by matching with SHELS and PRIMUS and confirm its fidelity by measuring a cross-correlation between the bins. We also check the reliability of the lensing signals through the null tests, lens-source flipping and cross shear measurement. Residual systematic errors from photometric redshift and shear calibration uncertainties are marginalized over in the nested sampling during our parameter constraint process. For the flat LCDM model, we determine S_8=sigma_8(Omega_m/0.3)^0.5=0.832+-0.028, which is in great agreement with the Planck data. We also verify that the two independent constraints from the cosmic shear and the galaxy clustering+galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements are consistent with each other. To address baryonic feedback effects on small scales, we marginalize over a baryonic feedback parameter, which we are able to constrain with the DLS data alone and more tightly when combined with Planck data. The constrained value hints at the possibility that the AGN feedback in the current OWLS simulations might not be strong enough.
