Ultraviolet Color-Magnitude Relations of Early-type Dwarf Galaxies in the Viro Cluster

  • We present ultraviolet (UV) color-magnitude relations (CMRs) of early-type dwarf galaxies in the Viro cluster, combining Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV data with SDSS optical data, based on the Extended Virgo Cluster catalog (EVCC). We find that dwarf lenticular galaxies (dS0s) show a surprisingly distinct and tight locus separated from that of ordinary dEs, which is not clearly seen in previous CMRs. The dS0s in UV CMRs follow a steeper sequence than dEs and show bluer UV-optical color at a given magnitude. We explore the observed CMRs with population models of a luminosity-dependent delayed exponential star formation history. The observed CMR of dS0s is well matched by models with relatively long delayed star formation. The dS0s are most likely transitional objects at the stage of subsequent transformation of late-type progenitors to ordinary red dEs in the cluster environment. Most early type dwarf galaxies with blue UV colors (FUV-r < 6 and NUV-r < 4) are identified as those showing spectroscopic hints of recent or ongoing star formation activities. In any case UV photometry provides a powerful teel to disentangle the diverse subpopulations of early-type dwarf galaxies and uncover their evolutionary histories. lenticular galaxies, and irregular high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies, respectively. Dwarf elliptical galaxies and dwarf irregular LSB galaxies occupy the similar structural parameter spaces. We suggest that giant elliptical galaxies and dwarf elliptical galaxies may have different origin.

Does the SED of a galaxy constrain its merger history?

  • It is widely accepted that the SED of a galaxy relates to its morphology. In addition, the SED of the galaxy is closely connected to its star formation history, and its morphological properties are affected by the merger history, interactions with its environment, and the gravitational instability of its dynamical system. Thus, it is likely that star formation history correlates to the elements that determine morphological properties. Among the elements, this study investigates how much the merger histories of galaxies influence their star formation histories. By using simple merger trees and semi-analytic models, which disregard feedback processes to exclusively identify merger effects on star formation histories, we examine the relation between various merger histories and SEDs of galaxies. From the results, we discuss whether the SED of a galaxy can represent and constrain its merger history.

A study of a tidally interacting BCD pair, ESO 435-IG20 and ESO 435-IG16

  • Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs) are systems that recently have experienced the burst of star formation. As one of the causes for active star formation in BCDs, tidal interaction (fly-by or merger) has been suggested. A pair of BCDs, ESO 435-IG20 and ESO 435-IG16 are separated by only ~80 kpc in projection at a similar redshift (at a ~9 Mpc distance), and hence suspected to be a good example of such case. Intergalactic atomic hydrogen gas found in HIPASS survey is also suggestive of this hypothesis. In this study, we probe the HI morphology and kinematics of this BCD pair using ATCA HI data to study detailed interaction history. We investigate various star formation tracers of the pair to study how responsible tidal interaction is for triggering star formation in these galaxies.

Hierarchical Structure of Star-Forming Regions in the Local Group

  • Hierarchical structure of star-forming regions is widespread and may be characteristic of all star formation. We studied the hierarchical structure of star-forming regions in the Local Group galaxies (M31, M33, Phoenix, Pegasus, Sextans A, Sextans B, WLM). The star-forming regions were selected from Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) far-UV imaging in various detection thresholds for investigating hierarchical structure. We examined the spatial distribution of the hot massive stars within star-forming regions from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) multi-band photometry. Small compact groups arranged within large complexes. The cumulative mass distribution follows a power law. The results allow us to understand the hierarchical structure of star formation and recent evolution of the Local Group galaxies.

Do Galaxy Mergers Enhance Star Formation Rate in Nearby Galaxies?

  • We present our study of the correlation between star formation rate(SFR) and merging activities of nearby galaxies(d<150Mpc). Our study uses 265 UV-selected galaxies which are not classified as AGN. The UV selection is made using the GALEX Atlas of Galaxies (Gil de Paz+07) and the updated UV catalog of nearby galaxies (Bai+15). We use deep R band optical images reaching to $1{\sigma}$ surface brightness detection limit ${\sim}27mag/arcsec^2$ to classify merger features by visual inspection. We also estimated unobscured SFR($SFR_{NUV}$) and obscured SFR($SFR_{W4}$) using Near-UV continuum and 22 micron Mid-IR luminosity respectively as a indicator of star forming activity. The fraction of galaxies with merger features in each SFR bin is obtained to see if how the fraction of galaxies with merging features($F_m$) changes as a function of SFR. As a result, for 203 late type galaxies(LTGs), we found that merger fraction increases from ~8% up to 50% with $SFR_{W4}$, while for 229 LTGs $SFR_{NUV}$ shows relatively consistent fraction(~18%) of merger fraction. For early type galaxies(ETGs), we could also find no significant correlation between $F_m$ and SFR(both $SFR_{NUV}$ and $SFR_{W4}$). This result suggests that a main driver of star forming activity of UV bright galaxies, especially for obscured late types, is mergers.

IMPACT OF NEIGHBORS IN SDSS GALAXY PAIRS

  • How galaxies are affected by their neighboring galaxies during galaxy-galaxy interactions is a long-standing question. We investigate the role of neighbors in galaxy pairs based on the SDSS data release 7 and the KIAS value-added galaxy catalog. Three groups of galaxies are identified: (a) galaxies with an early-type neighbor, (b) with a late-type neighbor, and (c) isolated ones with no neighbor. We compare their UV + optical colors and $H{\alpha}$ emission as indicators of the recent star-formation rate (SFR). Given that galaxies show systematic differences in SFR as functions of morphology, luminosity, and large-scale environments, we construct a control sample in which the galaxies have the same conditions (in terms of morphology, luminosity, and large-scale environment) except for the neighbor's properties (i.e., morphology, mass, and distance). The results are as follows. (1) Galaxies with a late-type companion demonstrate more enhanced SFR than those with an early-type companion. (2) Galaxies with an early-type neighbor show NUV- and u-band derived SFRs that are even lower than that of isolated galaxies, while they have similar or slightly higher $H{\alpha}$-based SFR compared to isolated ones.

The Zoo of Early-type Dwarf Galaxies in Clusters

  • Early-type dwarf galaxies are the most numerous galaxies in dense environments, making them ideal probes of the mechanisms that govern galaxy formation and evolution. Despite the common picture of an early-type dwarf galaxy as a quiescent one with no star formation and little gas, recent systematic investigations of early-type dwarf galaxies in the cluster revealed an unexpected variety among these apparently simple objects. In this talk, I review intriguing complexity of early-type dwarf galaxies in the cluster. I will also briefly introduce a new catalog of galaxies in the Virgo cluster using SDSS data, extended Virgo Cluster Catalog (EVCC).

AKARI-SDSS-GALEX SURVEYS: SPECTRAL ENERGY DISTRIBUTIONS OF NEARBY GALAXIES

  • A sample of nearby galaxies was built from the AKARI/FIS all sky survey cross-correlated with the SDSS and GALEX surveys. The spectral energy distributions from 0.15 to 160 microns of these galaxies are analysed to study dust attenuation and star formation properties. The calibrations of the amount of dust attenuation as a function of the IR-to-UV flux ratio and the FUV-NUV colour are re-investigated: the former one is confirmed to be robust and accurate whereas the use of the FUV-NUV colour to measure dust attenuation is found highly uncertain. The current star formation rate given by the SED fitting process is compared to that directly obtained from the UV and total IR luminosities. It leads to an accurate estimate of dust heating by old stars. We emphasize the importance of such a sample as a reference for IR selected star forming galaxies in the nearby universe.

Local $H{\alpha}$ Emitters: Low-z Analogs of z>4 Star-Forming Galaxies

  • We have identified local analogs of strong $H{\alpha}$ Emitters (HAEs) that dominate the z~4 Lyman-break galaxy population using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). At z<0.4, only 0.04% of galaxies are classified as HAEs with $H{\alpha}$ equivalent width larger than $500{\AA}$, comparable to that of z~4 HAEs. The $H{\alpha}$-to-UV luminosity ratio of local HAEs is consistent with that of z~4 HAEs, indicating relatively large specific star formation rate in these galaxies compared to traditionally studied UV-selected Lyman break analogs. Local HAEs are young, less evolved galaxies with low metallicity. It is still difficult to constrain whether the star formation in local HAEs is powered by minor mergers or by cosmological cold gas accretion. However, the stacked optical spectrum of local HAEs shows several strong ionization lines, for example HeII 4686 emission line, which are shown in Wolf-Rayet galaxies. Thus it is highly likely that local HAEs are galaxies with an elevated ionization parameter, either due to a high electron density or large escape fraction of hydrogen ionizing photons.

Demography of SDSS Early-type galaxies from the perspective of radial color gradients

  • We have studied the radial g-r color gradients of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR6 in the redshift range 0.00 < z < 0.06. The color profiles of ~30 per cent of the galaxies in this sample show positive color gradients (centers being bluer). These positive gradient galaxies often show strong $H\beta$ absorption line strengths or emission line ratios that are consistent with star-forming populations. Combining the optical data with Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV photometry, we find that all positive gradient galaxies show blue UV-optical colors. They also exhibit a tendency of having a lower stellar velocity dispersion. Positive gradient galaxies tend to live in lower density regions than negative gradient galaxies and are likely to have a late-type companion galaxy. On the other hand, massive early-type galaxies show negative color gradients. A simplistic population analysis shows that these positive color gradients are visible only for half a billion years after a star burst. Although the effective radius decreases and mean surface brightness increases due to this centrally concentrated star formation, the positions of the positive gradient galaxies on the fundamental plane cannot be reproduced by any amount of recent star formation. Instead it required a lower velocity dispersion.
