Galaxy cluster is the most important laboratoriy to study the effect of environment on galaxies, one of key questions in astronomy. In the local universe, it is well known that red, passive galaxies are concentrated in the cluster core. However, it is still controversial whether the star formation-density relation at the low redshift is retained in the distant universe. Many surveys have tried to find galaxy clusters at various epochs. However the optical dataset has limitations in finding galaxy clusters at z > 1, since the bulk of stellar emission of z > 1 galaxies is redshifted into the near-IR regime. We used the multi-wavelength data from the UKIDSS DXS (J and K bands), the SWIRE (4 IRAC bands), and the PAN-STARRS (g, r, i, z, y bands) and IMS (J band; Im et al. 2015, in preparation) in the European Large Area ISO Survey North1 (ELAIS-N1) field to search for high redshift galaxy clusters and study the properties of member galaxies. Using the multi-wavelength data, we investigated overdensities of galaxies at 0.2 < z < 1.6 based on the photometric redshift information. We found several superclusters where cluster candidates are concentrated within scales of few tens of Mpc at z ~ 0.9. Interestingly, some of the supercluster candidates consist of galaxy clusters which are dominated by blue galaxies. We will present high redshift galaxy cluster and supercluster candidates in ELAIS-N1 field and galaxy properties in different environments including dense clusters and fields.

To test whether the close relationships between host and satellite galaxies in isolated groups are also found in the harsh environment of a galaxy cluster, we carry out a case study of WHL 085910.0+294957, a galaxy cluster at z=0.30, using deep images obtained with the 2.1-m Otto Struve telescope and CQUEAN CCD camera. When environmental parameters are controlled, the local weighted mean color of faint galaxies shows a measurable correlation with the color of their bright ($M_i$ < -18) neighbor. The most striking result is that the red (r - i > 0.2) and bright galaxies within 200 kpc distance from the center of the cluster are correlated in color with very faint ($M_i$ > -14) galaxies around them by $(r-i)_{satellites}=(7.276{\pm}1.402){\times}(r-i)_{host}-2.434$ (correlation coefficient = 0.665). We suggest three scenarios to interpret the results: vestiges of infallen groups, dwarf capturing, and tidal tearing of bright galaxies.
Star forming dwarf galaxies in various environments are attractive objects for investigating the environmental effects on chemical evolution of dwarf galaxies. Using SDSS DR7 spectroscopic data and GALEX ultraviolet (UV) imaging data, we study the chemical properties of star forming dwarf galaxies in various environments of the Virgo cluster, Ursa Major group, and field. We derived gas-phase abundance, galaxy mass, and UV specific star formation rate (sSFR) of subsample, early-type (ETD) and late-type star forming dwarf (LTD) galaxies, which are divided by visually classified galaxy morphology. We found no O/H enhancement of LTDs in cluster and group environments compared to the field, implying no environmental dependence of the mass-metallicity relation for LTDs. LTDs in the Virgo cluster and Ursa Major group have similar sSFR at a given galaxy mass, but they exhibit systematically lower sSFR than those in isolated field environment. We suggest that LTDs in the Virgo cluster are an infalling population that was recently accreted from the outside of the cluster. We found that ETDs in the Virgo cluster and Ursa Major group exhibit enhanced O/H compared to those in the field. However, no distinct difference of N/O of galaxies between different environments. The chemically evolved ETDs in the Virgo cluster and Ursa Major group also show similar mass-sSFR relation, but systematically lower sSFR at a fixed galaxy mass compared to the field counterparts. We suggest that ETDs in the Virgo cluster and Ursa Major group have evolved under the similar local environments. We also discuss the evolutionary path of ETDs and LTDs with respect to the environmental effects of ram pressure stripping and galaxy interaction/merging.
Early-type dwarf galaxy (ETDG), the most abundant galaxy type in clusters, were recently shown to exhibit a wide variety in their properties. Particularly, the presence of blue cores in some ETDGs supports the scenario of late-type galaxy infall and subsequent transformation into red, quiescent ETDGs. While several transformation mechanisms for these ETDGs with blue core within cluster environment have been proposed, all these processes are able to explain only some of the observational properties of ETDGs such as stellar populations and structural parameters. In this context, internal kinematic properties of blue-cored ETDGs provide the most crucial evidence to discriminate different processes for the formation of these galaxies. We present a kinematic analysis of two blue-cored ETDGs in the Virgo cluster based on long-slit data obtained from Gemini Multi-Object Spectrographs (GMOS) observations. We find that the observed galaxies show kinematically decoupled sub-components in the velocity profile such as discontinuity or counter-rotating component. We discuss possible scenarios of formation of these transitional galaxies.

The M81 group is a nearby galaxy group hosted by M81, a twin galaxy of Milky Way. This galaxy group is considered as an ideal laboratory for near-field cosmology to understand mass assembly and evolution of galaxies in the group environment. We designed a project to investigate spectroscopic properties of globular cluster candidates in this group. We obtained spectra of globular cluster candidates using the MMT/Hectospec as a part of the K-GMT Science Program. Our main targets include globular cluster candidates of the M81 group member galaxies and those wandering in the intragroup region. We also observed supernova remnants and some background galaxies. Observing fields covered about 2 square degrees including three main galaxies of the M81 group. Using these spectra, we will identify globular clusters in the M81 group, and investigate their properties including age and metallicity. We will discuss the MMT/Hectospec data reduction processes, and future plan for this project.
It has been proposed by Gunn & Gott (1972) that galaxies may lose their interstellar gas by ram pressure due to the dense intra-cluster medium while falling to the cluster potential. The observational evidence for this process, which is known as ram pressure stripping, is increasing, and it is believed to be one of the key environmental effects that can dramatically change the star formation activity of galaxies and hence their evolution. Intriguingly however, some cases with clear signs of ram pressure stripping are found in the environment which betrays our expectations (e.g. large clustercentric distances), and our understandings to the detailed working principle behind ram pressure stripping seem to be still lacking. As one of the ways to gain more theoretical insights into the conditions for ram pressure stripping process, we have been comparing the gas truncation radius which is predicted based on the simple Gunn & Gott's prescription with what is actually observed in a sample of carefully selected Virgo galaxies. In this work, we present the results of our comparisons between the theoretically predicted truncation radius and the observationally measured truncation radius for individual galaxies in the sample and discuss which additional conditions are needed in order to fully understand the observations.
We study the environmental dependences of various quasar properties using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). For an environmental indicator, we construct the galaxy number density field from the latest data (Data Release 12) of Constant MASS (CMASS) galaxies of SDSS in the redshift range 0.46<=z<=0.59. The galaxy number density field is determined by searching the 20 nearest galaxies from each grid point. For quasars, we use the fifth edition of the SDSS Quasar Catalog made by Schneider et al. (2010) and the catalog of properties for the quasars by Shen et al. (2011). We find environmental dependences of quasar properties as a function of the galaxy number density. This will help us to understand the evolution of quasars with their environment, which will be useful to improve modeling Active Galactic Nuclei feedback in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations.

We identify a strong lensing galaxy in the cluster IRC 0218 that is spectroscopically confirmed to be at z = 1.62, making it the highest-redshift strong lens galaxy known. The lens is one of the two brightest cluster galaxies and lenses a background source galaxy into an arc and a counterimage. With Hubble Space Telescope (HST) grism and Keck/LRIS spectroscopy, we measure the source redshift to be $z_S=2.26$. Using HST imaging, we model the lens mass distribution with an elliptical power-law profile and account for the effects of the cluster halo and nearby galaxies. The Einstein radius is $^{\theta}E=0.38^{+0.02{\prime}{\prime}}_{-0.01}$ ($3.2^{+0.2}_{-0.1}kpc$) and the total enclosed mass is $M_{tot}(<^{\theta}_E)=1.8^{+0.2}_{-0.1}{\times}10^{11}M_{\odot}$. We estimate that the cluster environment contributes ~ 10% of this total mass. Assuming a Chabrier IMF, the dark matter fraction within $^{\theta}E$ is $f^{Chab}_{DM}=0.3^{+0.1}_{-0.3}$, while a Salpeter IMF is marginally inconsistent with the enclosed mass ($f^{Salp}_{DM}=-0.3^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$).

Although the link between activity in the nuclei of galaxy and galactic mergers has been under scrutiny for several years, it is still unclear to what extent and for which populations of active galaxies merger-triggered activity is relevant. The environment of AGN allows an indirect probe of the past merger history and future merger probability of these systems, suffering less from sensitivity issues while extending to higher redshifts, compared to traditional morphological studies of AGN host galaxies. Here we present results from our investigation of the environment of radio selected sources out to redshift z=2. We employ the first data release J-band catalog from the new near-IR Infrared Medium-Deep Survey (IMS) and 1.4 GHz radio data from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST) survey and a deep dedicated VLA survey of the VIMOS field, covering a combined total of ~20 sq. degrees. Given the flux limit of the combined radio catalog (0.1 mJy), we probe a radio luminosity range of 10^36-10^44 erg/s. Using the second and fifth closest neighbor density parameters, we test whether active galaxies inhabit denser environments and study these overdensities in terms of both distance to the AGN and its luminosity. We find evidence for a sub-population of radio-selected AGN that resides in significantly overdense environments at small scales, although we do not find significant overdensities for the bulk of our sample. We do not recover any dependence between the AGN radio-luminosity and overdensities. We show that radio-AGN inhabiting the most underdense environments in the field have vigorous ongoing star formation. We interpret these results in terms of the triggering and fuelling mechanism of radio-AGN.
Galaxies in the cluster environment interact with the intracluster medium (ICM), losing the interstellar medium (ISM) and alternating their evolution. Observational evidences of the extraplanar ISM stripped by the ICM's ram pressure are prevalent in HI imaging studies of cluster galaxies. However, current theoretical understanding of the ram pressure stripping (or ICM-ISM interaction in general) is still limited mainly due to the lack of numerical resolution at ISM scales in large-scale simulations. Especially, self-consistent modeling of the turbulent, multiphase ISM is critical to understand star formation in galaxies interacting with the ICM. To achieve this goal, we utilize the TIGRESS simulation suite, simulating a local patch of galactic disks with high resolution to resolve key physical processes in the ISM, including cooling/heating, self-gravity, MHD, star formation, and supernova feedback. We then expose the ISM disk to ICM flows and investigate the evolution of star formation rate and the properties of the ISM. By exploring ICM parameter space, we discuss an implication of the simple ram pressure stripping condition (so called the Gunn-Gott condition) to the realistic ISM.
