The NISS (Near-infrared Imaging Spectrometer for Star formation history) onboard NEXTSat-1 is being developed by KASI. The NISS will perform the imaging low-resolution spectroscopic observation in the near-infrared range for nearby galaxies, low background regions, starforming regions and so on. The off-axis reflecting telescope with a wide field of view (2 deg. ${\times}$ 2 deg.) will be operated in the wavelength range from 0.95 to $3.8{\mu}m$. In order to reduce thermal noise, a telescope and a HgCdTe infrared sensor will be cooled down to 200K and 80K, respectively. To evade a stray light outside a field of view and use limited space efficiently, the NISS adopted the off-axis reflective optical system. The primary and secondary mirrors, optomechanical part and mechanical structure were designed to use the same material. It will lessen the degradation of optical performance due to a thermal variation. The purpose of NISS is the observation of cosmic near-infrared background in the wide wavelength range as well as the detection of near-infrared spectral lines in nearby galaxies, cluster of galaxies and star forming regions. It will give us less biased information on the star formation history. In addition, we will demonstrate the space technologies related to the development of the Korea's leading near-infrared instrument for the future large infrared telescope, SPICA.
Tidal disruption events (TDEs) provide evidence for quiescent supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the centers of inactive galaxies. TDEs occur when a star on a parabolic orbit approaches close enough to a SMBH to be disrupted by the tidal force of the SMBH. The subsequent super-Eddington accretion of stellar debris falling back to the SMBH produces a characteristic flare lasting several months. It is theoretically expected that the bolometric light curve decays with time as proportional to $t^{-5/3}$. However, some of the observed X-ray light curves deviate from the $t^{-5/3}$ decay rate, while some of them are overall in good agreement with the $t^{-5/3}$ law. Therefore, it is required to construct the theoretical model for explaining these light curve variations consistently. In this paper, we revisit the mass fallback rates semi-analytically by taking account of the stellar internal structure, orbital eccentricity and penetration factor. We find that the mass fallback rate is shallower than the standard $t^{-5/3}$ decay rate independently of the polytropic index, and the orbital eccentricity only changes the magnitude of the mass fallback rate. Furthermore, the penetration factor significantly can modify the magnitude and variation of mass fallback rate. We confirm these results by performing the computational hydrodynamic simulations. We also discuss the relevance of our model by comparing these results with the observed light curves.

We present two large cosmological N-body simulations, called Horizon Run 2 (HR2) and Horizon Run 3 (HR3), made using $6000^3$ = 216 billions and $7210^3$ = 374 billion particles, spanning a volume of $(7.200\;h^{-1}Gpc)^3$ and $(10.815\;h^{-1}Gpc)^3$, respectively. These simulations improve on our previous Horizon Run 1 (HR1) up to a factor of 4.4 in volume, and range from 2600 to over 8800 times the volume of the Millennium Run. In addition, they achieve a considerably finer mass resolution, down to $1.25{\times}10^{11}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$, allowing to resolve galaxy-size halos with mean particle separations of $1.2h^{-1}$Mpc and $1.5h^{-1}$Mpc, respectively. We have measured the power spectrum, correlation function, mass function and basic halo properties with percent level accuracy, and verified that they correctly reproduce the CDM theoretical expectations, in excellent agreement with linear perturbation theory. Our unprecedentedly large-volume N-body simulations can be used for a variety of studies in cosmology and astrophysics, ranging from large-scale structure topology, baryon acoustic oscillations, dark energy and the characterization of the expansion history of the Universe, till galaxy formation science - in connection with the new SDSS-III. To this end, we made a total of 35 all-sky mock surveys along the past light cone out to z = 0.7 (8 from the HR2 and 27 from the HR3), to simulate the BOSS geometry. The simulations and mock surveys are already publicly available at http://astro.kias.re.kr/Horizon-Run23/.
The theoretically expected bolometric light curve decays with time as proportional to $t^{-5/3}$. However, the light curves observed in most of the optical-UV TDEs deviate from the $t^{-5/3}$ decay rate especially at early time, while the light curves of some soft-X-ray TDEs are overall in good agreement with the $t^{-5/3}$ law. Therefore, it is required to construct the theoretical model for explaining these light curve variations consistently. In this paper, we revisit the mass fallback rates analytically and semi-analytically by taking account of the structure of the star, which is simply modeled by the polytrope. We find the relation between a polytropic index and the power law index of the mass fallback rate. We also discuss whether and how the decay curves, which we derived, fit the observed ones.
The Sausage radio relic is the arc-like radio structure in the cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301, whose observed properties can be best understood by synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons accelerated at a merger-driven shock. However, there remain a few puzzles that cannot be explained by the shock acceleration model with only in-situ injection. In particular, the Mach number inferred from the observed radio spectral index, Mradio ≈ 4.6, while the Mach number estimated from X-ray observations, MX−ray ≈ 2.7. In an attempt to resolve such a discrepancy, here we consider the re-acceleration model in which a shock of Ms ≈ 3 sweeps through the intracluster gas with a pre-existing population of relativistic electrons. We find that observed brightness profiles at multi frequencies provide strong constraints on the spectral shape of pre-existing electrons. The models with a power-law momentum spectrum with the slope, s ≈ 4.1, and the cutoff Lorentz factor, γe,c ≈ 3−5×104, can reproduce reasonably well the observed spatial profiles of radio fluxes and integrated radio spectrum of the Sausage relic. The possible origins of such relativistic electrons in the intracluster medium remain to be investigated further.
We develop a parallel cosmological hydrodynamic simulation code designed for the study of formation and evolution of cosmological structures. The gravitational force is calculated using the TreePM method and the hydrodynamics is implemented based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics. The initial displacement and velocity of simulation particles are calculated according to second-order Lagrangian perturbation theory using the power spectra of dark matter and baryonic matter. The initial background temperature is given by Recfast and the temperature uctuations at the initial particle position are assigned according to the adiabatic model. We use a time-limiter scheme over the individual time steps to capture shock-fronts and to ease the time-step tension between the shock and preshock particles. We also include the astrophysical gas processes of radiative heating/cooling, star formation, metal enrichment, and supernova feedback. We test the code in several standard cases such as one-dimensional Riemann problems, Kelvin-Helmholtz, and Sedov blast wave instability. Star formation on the galactic disk is investigated to check whether the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation is properly recovered. We also study global star formation history at different simulation resolutions and compare them with observations.
The Milky Way (MW) and other systems including M31 and Cen A have flattened structures of their satellites (Disk of Satellites, DoS). Such structures are rare in simulations under the ΛCDM paradigm. DoS is known to depend mainly on 1) the alignment of satellite orbits and 2) the degree of central concentration of satellites. In this work, we examine quantitatively how these two parameters affect the flatness of a system. We find that the MW-like DoS is rare in IllustrisTNG100 simulation because its two parameters are out of the 1-s range and furthermore the MW has a structure more flattened than the other systems having similar parameters. Besides, we propose a new criterion for the MW-like systems superseding the conventional ones such as major-minor axis ratio of the MW's DoS with a value of 0.183. Each satellite system has a specific orbital combination and thus has a particular distribution of its parameters (and thus flatness). The median of the distribution is set as the representative value of each system. And the representative value of the MW can be used as a new criterion for classifying the MW-like DoS. We reconstruct the orbital combination of the observed MW satellites using GAIA DR2 data and find the systems in the simulation that have representative values similar to the new criterion from the reconstructed MW system. This allows us a new interpretation on the rarity of MW-like DoS in cosmological simulations.

We analyze the clustering of large scale structure in the Universe in a model independent method, accounting for anisotropic effects along and transverse to the line of sight. A large sample of 690,000 galaxies from The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopy Survey Data Release 11 are used to determine the Hubble expansion H, angular distance D_A, and growth rate GT at an effective redshift of z=0.57. After careful bias and convergence studies of the effects from small scale clustering, we find that cutting transverse separations below 40 Mpc/h delivers robust results while smaller scale data leads to a bias due to unmodelled nonlinear and velocity effects. The converged results are in agreement with concordance LCDM cosmology, general relativity, and minimal neutrino mass, all within the $68{\backslash}%$ confidence level. We also present results separately for the northern and southern hemisphere sky, finding a slight tension in the growth rate -- potentially a signature of anisotropic stress, or just covariance with small scale velocities -- but within $68{\backslash}%$ CL.
To probe the star formation in local and early Universe, the NISS with a capability of imaging spectroscopy in the near-infrared is being developed by KASI. The main scientific targets are nearby galaxies, galaxy clusters, star-forming regions and low background regions. The off-axis optical design of the NISS with 15cm aperture was optimized to obtain a wide field of view (FoV) of $2deg.{\times}2deg.$ as well as a wide spectral coverage from 0.9 to $3.8{\mu}m$. The opto-mechanical structure was designed to be safe enough to endure in both the launching condition and the space environment. The dewar will operate $1k{\times}1k$ infrared sensor at 80K stage. The NISS will be launched in 2017 and explore the large areal near-infrared sky up to $200deg.^2$ in order to get both spatial and spectral information for astronomical objects. As an extension of the NISS, KASI is planning to participate in a new small space mission together with NASA. The promising candidate, SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) is an all-sky survey satellite designed to reveal the origin of the Universe and water in the planetary systems and to explore the evolution of galaxies. Though the survey concept is similar to that of the NISS, the SPHEREx will perform the first near-infrared all-sky imaging spectroscopic survey with the wider spectral range from 0.7 to $5{\mu}m$ and the wider FoV of $3.5deg.{\times}7deg.$ Here, we report the current status of the NISS and introduce new mission for the near-infrared imaging spectroscopic survey.

We present a set of high-resolution 3D MHD simulations exploring the evolution of light, supersonic jets in cluster environments. We model sets of high- and low-Mach jets entering both uniform surroundings and King-type atmospheres and propagating distances more than 100 times the initial jet radius. Through complimentary analyses of synthetic observations and energy flow, we explore the detailed interactions between these jets and their environments. We find that jet cocoon morphology is strongly influenced by the structure of the ambient medium. Jets moving into uniform atmospheres have more pronounced backflow than their non-uniform counterparts, and this difference is clearly reflected by morphological differences in the synthetic observations. Additionally, synthetic observations illustrate differences in the appearances of terminal hotspots and the x-ray and radio correlations between the high- and low-Mach runs. Exploration of energy flow in these systems illustrates the general conversion of kinetic to thermal and magnetic energy in all of our simulations. Specifically, we examine conversion of energy type and the spatial transport of energy to the ambient medium. Determination of the evolution of the energy distribution in these objects will enhance our understanding of the role of AGN feedback in cluster environments.
