Role of environment in the origin of early-type dwarf galaxies

  • Role of environments is one of today's most widely discussed and debated topic in the field of extra-galactic astronomy. Extreme morphology-density relations found in low-mass galaxies are considered to be the result of an effective role played by environment in the evolution of these galaxies. I will present the results from our dedicated study of early-type dwarf galaxies (dEs) in different environments using imaging and spectroscopic data. We find that Virgo cluster dEs have a variety of structural and kinematic properties. A significant fraction of dEs possesses disk features, such as spiral arm and bar, while a central nucleus seems to be universal in these low mass galaxies. We also find that a majority of dEs are fast rotator and their rotation curves are much steeper than that of spiral galaxies of similar mass. Finally I will discuss how the different environmental mechanisms, i.e., gas-stripping or tidal interaction, can contribute to form heterogeneous dEs in Virgo cluster.

The environment dependences of quasar properties in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

  • We study the environmental dependences of various quasar properties using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). For an environmental indicator, we construct the galaxy number density field from the latest data (Data Release 12) of Constant MASS (CMASS) galaxies of SDSS in the redshift range 0.46<=z<=0.59. The galaxy number density field is determined by searching the 20 nearest galaxies from each grid point. For quasars, we use the fifth edition of the SDSS Quasar Catalog made by Schneider et al. (2010) and the catalog of properties for the quasars by Shen et al. (2011). We find environmental dependences of quasar properties as a function of the galaxy number density. This will help us to understand the evolution of quasars with their environment, which will be useful to improve modeling Active Galactic Nuclei feedback in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations.

A FULLY EMPIRICAL APPROACH TO GALAXY EVOLUTION

  • Observations of large samples of galaxies from low to high redshifts are composing a picture of remarkable simplicity: (1) The star formation rate (SFR) of starforming galaxies scales almost linearly with mass, strongly decline with cosmic time, and exhibits very small scatter around the average relation. (2) Due to the high observed SFRs the mass of galaxies at high redshifts must increase very rapidly, and yet the mass function of star forming galaxies evolves only very slightly with redshift. (3) At all redshifts the fraction of quenched (passively evolving) galaxies increases with galactic stellar mass and with local overdensity, with the remarkable property that the relative efficiency of "mass quenching" is independent of environment, and that of "environment quenching" is independent of mass. In a recent paper by the zCOSMOS collaboration, Peng et al. (2010) demonstrate that these three empirical facts suffice to account for the observed evolution of the galaxy mass function and naturally generate the "double-Schechter" mass function for quenched galaxies.

Statistical Properties of Flyby Encounters of Galaxies in Cosmological N-body Simulations

  • Using cosmological N-body simulations we investigate statistical properties of flyby encounters between halos in comparison with mergers. We classify halo pairs into two groups based on the total energy (E12); flybys (E12 > 0) and mergers (E12 < 0). By measuring the flyby and merger fractions, we assess their dependencies on redshift (0 < z < 4), halo mass (10.8 < log Mhalo/Msun < 13.0), and large-scale environment (from field to cluster). We find that the flyby and merger fractions similarly increase with redshift until z = 1, and that the flyby fraction at higher redshift (1 < z < 4) slightly decreases in contrast to the continuously increasing merger fraction. While the merger fraction has little or no dependence on the mass and environment, the flyby fraction correlates negatively with mass and positively with environment. The flyby fraction exceeds the merger fraction in filaments and clusters; even 10 times greater in the densest environment. Our results suggest that the flyby makes a substantial contribution to the observed pair fraction, thus heavily influencing galactic evolution across the cosmic time.

  • 우주시스템 연구실에서 개발 중인 HAUSAT-2의 우주방사능 환경은 포획된 양자와 전자, 태양양성자이다. 본 논문에서는 우주방사능 환경에 대해 임무기간동안의 총 피폭량을 계산하였고, 총 피폭량에 대해 HAUSAT-2에서 사용하는 부품들의 부품의 우주방사능 허용레벨 분류과정을 통해 사용가능성을 검증하였다. 또한 단일사건 발생확률을 계산하여 단일사건 발생에 대비하는 시스템을 설계에 반영하였다.

LIFECYCLE OF THE INTERSTELLAR DUST GRAINS IN OUR GALAXY VIEWED WITH AKARI/MIR ALL-SKY SURVEY

  • The interstellar dust grains are formed and supplied to interstellar space from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars or supernova remnants, and become constituents of the star- and planet-formation processes that lead to the next generation of stars. Both a qualitative, and a compositional study of this cycle are essential to understanding the origin of the pre-solar grains, the missing sources of the interstellar material, and the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. The AKARI/MIR all-sky survey was performed with two mid-infrared photometric bands centered at 9 and $18{\mu}m$. These data have advantages in detecting carbonaceous and silicate circumstellar dust of AGB stars, and the interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons separately from large grains of amorphous silicate. By using the AKARI/MIR All-Sky point source catalogue, we surveyed C-rich and O-rich AGB stars in our Galaxy, which are the dominant suppliers of carbonaceous and silicate grains, respectively. The C-rich stars are uniformly distributed across the Galactic disk, whereas O-rich stars are concentrated toward the Galactic center, following the metallicity gradient of the interstellar medium, and are presumably affected by the environment of their birth place. We will compare the distributions of the dust suppliers with the distributions of the interstellar grains themselves by using the AKARI/MIR All-Sky diffuse maps. To enable discussions on the faint diffuse interstellar radiation, we are developing an accurate AKARI/MIR All-Sky diffuse map by correcting artifacts such as the ionising radiation effects, scattered light from the moon, and stray light from bright sources.

Core formation in different environments: Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) in the λ Orionis cloud, Orion A and Orion B clouds

  • Based on the $850{\mu}m$ dust continuum data from James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT)/SCUBA-2, we compare overall properties of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud with PGCCs in other molecular clouds, Orion A and Orion B. The Orion A and Orion B clouds are well known active star-forming region, while, ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud has a different environment associating with prominent OB associations and a giant H II region. PGCCs in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud have higher dust temperatures (Td~16.08 K) and lower values of dust emissivity (${\beta}{\sim}1.65$) than Orion A and Orion B clouds. In addition, we found the lowest detection rate (16 %, 8 out of 50) of PGCCs at $850{\mu}m$ in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud while among three regions; Orion A and Orion B clouds show much higher detection rates of ~ 76 % (23 out of 30) and 56 % (9 out of 16), respectively. The detected 8 PGCCs in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud have substructures and we identified 15 cores. The cores also show much lower median values of size (~0.08 pc), column density (~ ), number density (~ ), and mass (~ ) compared with other cores in the Orion A and Orion B clouds. These core properties in the ${\lambda}$ Orionis cloud can be attributed to the compression and external heating by the nearby H II region, which may prevent the PGCCs from forming gravitationally bound structures and eventually disperse them. These results well present the negative stellar feedback to core formation.

Statistical Analysis of Fly-by interactions between Galaxies via Cosmological Simulations

  • Galactic fly-by interactions are believed to be far more frequent than direct mergers, acting as hidden drivers of galaxy evolution. We perform a tree-particle-mesh code GOTPM, and investigate the statistical properties of the fly-by interactions as functions of halo masses and ambient environments. Based on the total energy of the two halos of interest, impulsive fly-by pairs are identified from eventual merger candidates. We find three obvious results as follows: (1) Halos in the high-dense environment experience more frequent mergers and fly-by encounters than those in the low-dense region; (2) In the massive halos, both merger and fly-by fractions evolve more dramatically with time than those in dwarfs; and (3) The fly-by fraction decreases as approaching the present epoch, in contrast to the increase of the merger fraction.

Improved dynamical modeling of the Arches cluster

  • The Arches cluster is one of the compact, young, massive star clusters near the center of our galaxy. Since it is located only ~30 pc away in projection from the galactic center (GC), the cluster is an excellent target for studying the effects of star forming environment on, for example, the initial mass function under the extreme condition of GC. To estimate the initial condition of the Arches cluster, we compare our calculation results from the anisotropic Fokker-Planck method with the most recent observational data sets for the surface density and velocity dispersion profiles and the present-day mass function.

Extragalactic Research Highlights of AKARI - From Nearby Galaxies to Quasars in the Early Universe -

  • I summarize highlights from extragalactic research activities performed with AKARI infrared space telescope. The main emphasis will be given to the works carried out by Korean astronomers. The activities span a wide range of topics, such as MIR properties of nearby galaxies in cluster environment, MIR diagnosis of star-forming galaxies at z=0 through z=2 in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) survey field, the Extended Groth Strip (EGS), and the First Look Survey (FLS) field, and the NIR spectroscopy of Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) and Active Galactic Nuclei/Super-massive Black Holes at low redshift as well as near the re-ionization epoch of z~6. I describe FIR and MIR all sky data which can be used as a precious resource for extragalactic research, and other future and ongoing works with AKARI. These AKARI results will form a strong basis for future studies using other facilities, such as infrared surveys with UKIRT, FIR study of dusty universe with Herschel, and the SPICA mission.
