Whole Stand Survival Prediction Model in Slash Pine Plantations Infected with Fusiform Rust (수병(銹病)에 감염(感染)된 슬래쉬소나무 조림지(造林地)에 대한 임분단위(林分單位)의 생존 (生存) 예측모형(豫測模型))

  • Repeated measurement of 472 permanent subplots in slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) plantations were used to develop survival prediction equations for predicting future number of planted slash pine trees. On the average, about 40 percent of the slash pines in the experimental sites had a stem cankers due to fusiform rust (Cronartium quercuum [Berk.] Miyabe ex Shirai f. sp. fusiforme) incidence. A stand level survival prediction model was developed that incorporated the incidence of fusiform rust and allowed the transition paths of trees from an uninfected stage to an infected stage. Predicted total surviving number of trees is obtained by adding together the predicted number of infected and uninfected trees. The influence of natural hardwood density and site quality on slash pine survivals tended to show a negative effects on future survivals.

Rust of Lysimachia clethroides Caused by Puccinia dieteliana (Puccinia dieteliana에 의한 큰까치수영녹병)

  • A rust disease occurred on Lysimachia clethroides in Deogyusan National Park, Jeollabukdo. The typical symptoms of the disease appeared as small, yellowish spots on leaves at first. The spots then turned yellowish brown and powdery mass of blackish brown spores appeared on the lesions. Severely infected leaves blighted and eventually shriveled. Teliospores were yellowish brown in color, clavate or fusiform in shape and $38{\sim}62\;{\times}\;14{\sim}22\;{\mu}m$ in size, the apex rounded or obtuse, the base attenuated. Pedicels hyaline, persistence, up to $75{\mu}m$ long. The causal fungus was identified as Puccinia dieteliana based on mycological characteristics and host specificity.

  • rust fungus, Uromyces truncicola, infected stems, branches and leaves of Sophora japonica trees, and 78% of planted host depending on investigated sites. Teliospores of this fungus were reddish brown, global to oval and $29-37{\times}24-27\;{\mu}m$. The urediniospores were yellowish brown, elliptical to oval with spiny surface and $28-39{\times}19-22\;{\mu}m$. In the infected branches cork layers were thickened, ray parenchymatous cells were distorted, branched or combined and increased in numbers. While ray parenchymatous cells in healthy branches were one or two layers, the cells in the infected branches were three or more layers to shape fusiform. In the infected branches xylem tissues also distorted and yellowish pigments formed in the intercellular space. In the less infected trees the hairs on the branches were dense and long, and the thickness of upper epidermal cell walls were ca 23.3 ${\mu}m$, while in the highly infected trees the hairs were less dense and short, and the thickness of upper epidermal cell walls was ca 17.4 ${\mu}m$. We think individual host trees resistant to this fungus are present.
