The clinical and radiographic findings of lung cancer have been well established many journals. Even if the radiographic findings of lung cancer show a typical pattern, the specific cell type of lung cancer sometimes needs to be determined prior to a pathological diagnosis. For example, the usual finding of a squamous cell carcinoma is similar to other cancer types such as an adenocarcinoma or a small cell carcinoma but with a lower incidence. Therefore, it should not be used to make a diagnosis of the cell type prior to a pathological diagnosis. Many unusual findings of lung cancer, so called atypical pattern have been reported, but atypical findings are widely accepted. The more important thing is not to diagnose a specific cell type of cancer but to differentiate it from other benign conditions such as tuberculosis, fungal infections or organizing pneumonia. This paper presents typical information of the cell type of lung cancer along with the atypical radiographic findings.

During a disease survey conducted in April 2022, we observed severe gray mold symptoms on inflorescences of mango trees (Mangifera indica) grown in a vinyl greenhouse in Jeju, Korea. The symptoms occurred on the flowers and peduncles, on which a lot of gray molds were formed. The incidence of gray mold on the inflorescences in the vinyl greenhouse ranged from 10% to 40%. Three fungal isolates were obtained from the lesions and identified as Botrytis cinerea based on their morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. All isolates of B. cinerea were tested for their pathogenicity to inflorescences of mango trees through artificial inoculation. The pathogenicity of the isolates was confirmed on the flowers and peduncles. The symptoms induced by the isolates were similar to those on the inflorescences of mango trees observed in the disease survey. This is the first report of B. cinerea causing gray mold in mango in Korea.

In June 2021, foot rot symptoms were observed in wasabi (Eutrema japonicum) plants growing in vinyl greenhouses of the Alpine Agricultural Experiment Station, Wild Vegetable Research Institute, in Taebaek, Gangwon Province, Korea. Diseased plants displayed black soft rot of crowns and petioles at the soil line and wilted. The incidence of diseased plants was 2-10% in four out of five vinyl greenhouses investigated. Eight fungal isolates were obtained from diseased plants. All the isolates were identified as Phytophthora pseudocrytogea based on their morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. Three isolates of P. pseudocrytogea were used for pathogenicity test on wasabi plants via artificial inoculation. The pathogenicity of the isolates was confirmed in the inoculated wasabi plants. The symptoms shown by the inoculated plants were similar to those observed in plants from the investigated vinyl greenhouses. This is the first report of P. pseudocryptogea causing Phytophthora foot rot in wasabi.
During disease surveys of Angelica acutiloba plants in Korea, leaf spot symptoms were observed in a field in Andong in July 2019, and stem rot symptoms in vinyl greenhouses in Yangpyeong in April 2020. Incidence of leaf spot and stem rot of the plants ranged from 10 to 20% and 5 to 30%, respectively. Morphological and cultural characteristics of fungal isolates from the leaf spot and stem rot symptoms fitted into those of the genus Phoma. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of two single-spore isolates from the symptoms using concatenated sequences of LSU, ITS, TUB2, and RPB2 genes authenticated an independent cluster from other Didymella (anamorph: Phoma) species. Moreover, the isolates showed different morphological and cultural characteristics in comparison to closely related Didymella species. These discoveries confirmed the novelty of the isolates. Pathogenicity of the novel Didymella species isolates was substantiated on leaves and stems of A. acutiloba through artificial inoculation. Thus, this study reveals that Didymella acutilobae sp. nov. causes leaf spot and stem rot in Angelica acutiloba.

During crop disease surveys in 2019 and 2021, we observed gray mold symptoms on the leaves of wasabi (Eutrema japonicum) plants grown in vinyl greenhouses in Taebaek and Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, Korea. The symptoms appeared at the edges of the leaves, where the infected areas turned black and rotted, and many gray molds formed on the lesions. The incidence of gray mold on the leaves in the vinyl greenhouses at the two locations ranged from 1 to 30%. Four fungal isolates were obtained from leaf lesions and identified as Botrytis cinerea based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. Two isolates of B. cinerea were used for pathogenicity tests on the leaves of wasabi plants by artificial inoculation. The pathogenicity of the isolates was confirmed in leaves. The symptoms induced by the isolates were similar to those observed in wasabi leaves in the vinyl greenhouses investigated. This is the first report of B. cinerea causing gray mold in wasabi in Korea.

Background: Posaconazole is a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal agent and the most recommended prophylactic antifungal agent for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) undergoing induction chemotherapy. In this study, we evaluated the status and effectiveness of posaconazole as a prophylactic antifungal agent in pediatric patients receiving induction chemotherapy for AML. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 36 pediatric patients with AML (between January 2013 and September 2017) at the Yonsei University Health System. Invasive fungal disease (IFD) was assessed as the primary endpoint of prophylactic antifungal effect. The secondary endpoints were incidence of fever, persistent fever despite the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics for 72 h, alteration of antifungal agent, intensive care unit admission, and death within 100 days. Results: Among the 36 patients, 18 patients used posaconazole, 12 were treated with suspension formula, and 6 of them were treated with tablets. Eighteen patients did not use antifungal agents prophylactically. The mean number of days of posaconazole administration was $26.8{\pm}16days$. IFD occurred in 2/18 (11.1%) patients in the no prophylaxis group and in 1/18 (5.6%) patients in the posaconazole group (p=0.49). Conclusion: Posaconazole is expected to be useful for the prevention of IFD in pediatric patients with AML undergoing induction chemotherapy. Prospective studies of the effectiveness of posaconazole prophylaxis should be conducted in more pediatric patients in the future.
Guinea pigs were cutaneously inoculated with Trichophyton verrucosum var album, that is a common causative fungus of dermatophytosis in cattle. The developmental process of lesions, clinical and histopathological changes and reisolations of the fungi were studied to evaluate the pathogenicity of Trichophyton verrucosum var album in guinea pigs. Results obtained through the experiments were summarized as follows : 1. The incidence of infection of the clipping group was 13(86%) of 15 animals, and that of the plucking group was 14(93%) of 15 animals. In both of the clipping and plucking groups, visible cutaneoas lesions were developed between 4 and 7 days post inoculation(p.i.). The spreading and the climax stages persisted for 4 to 11 and 6 to 12 days, respectively. 2. In macroscopic observations, formation of various degree of erythemas and scales over the inoculated skin sites were observed in the spreading stage. In the climax stage, exudative changes and dark red crusts were formed as typical circular lesions. In the healing stage, the lesions revealed shedding of crust, alopecia and hair regrowth. 3. In histopathological observations, infiltration of inflammatory cells, hyperplasia, microabscesses and keratinous-hyaloid materials of epidermis were observed in the spreading stage. Hyphal invasion was primarily observed at the level of epidermis and pilosebaceous ducts. In the climax stage, the infected epidermis was thick with severe hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis and acanthosis. The microabscesses with fungal hyphae, folliculitis and hyperplasia of external root sheath were observed in the dermis. The fungal hyphae were observed only in the tissues of hair follicles, that were internal root sheath, cuticle, the keratinized portions of cortex and medulla 4. In reisolation of the inoculated fungus, all trials for ten animals showed positive cultures until 25 days p.i.. Afterward, the reisolation rates were gradually decreased, showing all negative after 40 days p.i..
In this study, we aimed to characterize fungal samples from necrotic lesions on collar regions observed in different sweetpotato growing regions during 2015 and 2016 in Korea. Sclerotia appeared on the root zone soil surface, and white dense mycelia were observed. At the later stages of infection, mother roots quickly rotted, and large areas of the plants were destroyed. The disease occurrence was monitored at 45 and 84 farms, and 11.8% and 6.8% of the land areas were found to be infected in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Fungi were isolated from disease samples, and 36 strains were preserved. Based on the cultural and morphological characteristics of colonies, the isolates resembled the reference strain of Sclerotium rolfsii. Representative strains were identified as S. rolfsii (teleomorph: Athelia rolfsii) based on phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer and large subunit genes along with morphological observations. To test the pathogenicity, sweetpotato storage roots were inoculated with different S. rolfsii strains. 'Yulmi' variety displayed the highest disease incidence, whereas 'Pungwonmi' resulted in the least. These findings suggested that morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analysis were useful for identification of S. rolfsii.
Indigenous fungus-feeding nematodes may adversely affect the growth and activity of introduced biocontrol fungi. Alginate pellets of the biocontrol fungus Trichoderma harzianum ThzID1-M3 and sclerotia of the fungal plant pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum were added to nonsterile soil at a soil water potential of -50 or -1,000 kPa. The biomass of ThzID1-M3, nematode populations, and extent of colonization of sclerotia by ThzID1-M3 were monitored over time. The presence of ThzID1-M3 increased the nematode population under both moisture regimes (p < 0.05), and fungivores comprised 69-75% of the nematode population. By day 5, the biomass of ThzID1-M3b and its colonization of sclerotia increased and were strongly correlated (R2 = 0.98), followed by a rapid reduction, under both regimes. At -50 kPa (the wetter of the two environments), fungal biomass and colonization by ThzID1-M3 were less, in the period from 5 to 20 days, while fungivores were more abundant. These results indicate that ThzID1-M3 stimulated the population growth of fungivorous nematodes, which in turn, reduced the biocontrol ability of the fungus to mycoparasitize sclerotia. However, colonization incidence reached 100% by day 5 and remained so for the experimental period under both regimes, although hyphal fragments disappeared by day 20. Our results suggest that indigenous fungivores are an important constraint for the biocontrol activity of introduced fungi, and sclerotia can provide spatial refuge for biocontrol fungi from the feeding activity of fungivorous nematodes.
In 2020 and 2021, we surveyed diseases of three-leaf ladybell (Adenophora triphylla) plants grown in fields at two locations in Korea. During the disease surveys, severe leaf rot symptoms were observed on the young plants in Hongseong, and stem rot symptoms on the adult plants in Cheolwon. The incidence of leaf rot was 5-60%, and that of stem rot 1-10%. We obtained 6 fungal isolates each from the leaf rot lesions and the stem rot lesions. All the isolates were morphologically identified as Rhizoctonia solani. Anastomosis test and investigation of cultural features of the fungal isolates revealed that the isolates from the leaf rot lesions corresponded to R. solani AG-1(IB), and those from the stem rot lesions to R. solani AG-2-2(IIIB). Two isolates each of R. solani AG-1(IB) and AG-2-2(IIIB) were used for DNA sequence analysis and pathogenicity test to three-leaf ladybell plants through artificial inoculation. The anastomosis groups and cultural types of the R. solani isolates were confirmed by the sequence analysis. The pathogenicity tests revealed that the isolates of R. solani AG-1(IB) caused only leaf rot symptoms on the inoculated plants, and those of R. solani AG-2-2(IIIB) leaf rot and stem rot symptoms. The induced symptoms were similar to those observed in the fields investigated. Leaf and stem rot of three-leaf ladybell caused by the two anastomosis groups and cultural types of R. solani is first reported in this study.
