  • This research deals with how to select connection positions of two substructures to be synthesized. The goal of this research is to find optimal connection positions in order to maximize the fundamental natural frequency of the synthesized structure. The natural frequencies of a connected structure are obtained by modal-force equations. Optimal connection positions can be selected through optimization process. In the optimization process, the natural frequencies of a connected structure are set to object function value and connection positions become design variables. The method described above is applied to synthesis problems of plates, which is initially conducted for FE models and verified through experiments. Especially in experiments. FRF(frequency response function) s are obtained by means of the Modal Testing technique to be used in modal-force equations for synthesizing. Once the substructures are synthesized. the Modal Testing technique is again applied to spot-welded structure using the result from the optimization procedure. It is found that the fundamental natural frequency of the synthesized structure with the optimized result gives higher value than those with the initially given connection positions.

  • In the current investigation, large amplitude free vibration behavior of shallow curved pipes (tubes) made of functionally graded materials is investigated. Properties of the tube are distributed across the radius of the tube and are obtained by means of a power law function. It is also assumed that all thermo-mechanical properties are temperature dependent. The governing equations of the tube are obtained using a higher order shear deformation tube theory, where the traction free boundary conditions are satisfied on the top and bottom surfaces of the tube. The von Kármán type of geometrical non-linearity is included into the formulation to consider the large displacements and small strains. Uniform temperature elevation of the tube is also included into the formulation. For the case of tubes which are simply supported in flexure and axially immovable, the governing equations are solved using the two-step perturbation technique. Closed form expressions are provided to obtain the small and large amplitude fundamental natural frequencies of the FGM shallow curved tubes in thermal environment. Numerical results are given to explore the effects of thermal environment, radius ratio, and length to thickness ratio of the tube on the fundamental linear and non-linear frequencies.

  • This paper attempts to extract the fundamental dynamic properties, i.e. natural frequencies, damping ratios of the 48 m-long, $20^{\circ}$ skewed real bridge with PSC girders wrapped by a steel plate. The forced vibration test is achieved by mounting 12 Hz-capacity of artificial oscillator on the top of bridge deck. The acceleration histories at the 9 different locations of deck surface are recorded using accelerometors. From this full-scaled vibration test, the two possible resonance frequencies are detected at 2.38 Hz and 9.86 Hz of the skewed bridge deck by sweeping a beating frequency up to 12 Hz. The absolute acceleration/energy exhibits much higher in case of higher-order twist mode, 9.86 Hz due to the skewness of bridge deck which leads asymmetric situation of vibration. This implies the test bridge is under swinging vertically in fundamental flexure mode while the bridge is also flickered up and down laterally at 9.86 Hz. This is probably by asymmetric geometry of skewed deck. A detailed 3D beam-shell bridge models using finite elements are performed under a series of train loads for modal dynamic analyses. Thereby, the effect of skewness is examined to clarify the lateral flickering caused by asymmetrical geometry of bridge deck.

  • The optimum design of structures with frequency constraints is of great importance in the aeronautical industry. In order to avoid severe vibration, it is necessary to shift the fundamental frequency of the structure away from the frequency range of the dynamic loading. This paper develops a novel topology optimisation method for optimising the fundamental frequencies of structures. The finite element dynamic eigenvalue problem is solved to derive the sensitivity function used for the optimisation criteria. An alternative material interpolation scheme is developed and applied to the optimisation problem. A novel level-set criteria and updating routine for the weighting factors is presented to determine the optimal topology. The optimisation algorithm is applied to a simple two-dimensional plane stress plate to verify the method. Optimisation for maximising a chosen frequency and maximising the gap between two frequencies are presented. This has the application of stiffness maximisation and flutter suppression. The results of the optimisation algorithm are compared with the state of the art in frequency topology optimisation. Test cases have shown that the algorithm produces similar topologies to the state of the art, verifying that the novel technique is suitable for frequency optimisation.

  • This study aimed to develop a high-order shear deformation theory to predict the free vibration of hybrid cross-ply laminated plates under different boundary conditions. The equations of motion for laminated hybrid rectangular plates are derived and obtained by using Hamilton's principle. The closed-form solutions of anti-symmetric cross-ply and angle-ply laminates are obtained by using Navier's solution. To assess the validity of our method, we used the finite element method. Firstly, the analytical and the numerical implementations were validated for an antisymmetric cross-ply square laminated with available results in the literature. Then, the effects of side-to-thickness ratio, aspect ratio, lamination schemes, and material properties on the fundamental frequencies for different combinations of boundary conditions of hybrid composite plates are investigated. The comparison of the analytical solutions with the corresponding finite element simulations shows the good accuracy of the proposed analytical closed form solution in predicting the fundamental frequencies of hybrid cross-ply laminated plates under different boundary conditions.

  • This paper presents unprecedented damped oscillation behaviours of a precast steel-concrete composite slab panel for track support. The steel-concrete composite slab track is an innovative slab track, a form of ballastless track which is becoming increasingly attractive to asset owners as they seek to reduce lifecycle costs and deal with increasing rail traffic speeds. The slender nature of the slab panel due to its reduced depth of construction makes it susceptible to vibration problems. The aim of the study is driven by the need to address the limited research available to date on the dynamic behaviour of steel-concrete composite slab panels for track support. Free vibration analysis of the track slab has been carried out using ABAQUS. Both undamped and damped eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes have been extracted using the Lancsoz method. The fundamental natural frequencies of the slab panel have been identified together with corresponding mode shapes. To investigate the sensitivity of the natural frequencies and mode shapes, parametric studies have been established, considering concrete strength and mass and steel's modulus of elasticity. This study is the world first to observe crossover phenomena that result in the inversion of the natural orders without interaction. It also reveals that replacement of the steel with aluminium or carbon fibre sheeting can only marginally reduce the natural frequencies of the slab panel.

  • Vibration analysis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is very essential field owing to their many promising applications in tiny instruments. In current study, the Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory with clamped-clamped and clamped-free end conditions is utilized for the vibration analysis of armchair and zigzag SWCNTs. The Fourier method is utilized to solve the ordinary differential equation. The motion equation for this system is developed using a novel wave propagation method. Complex exponential functions have been used and the axial model depends on BCs that has been described at the edges of CNTs. The behavior of different nonlocal parameters is considered to find the vibrational frequency of SWCNTs. It is exhibited that the effect of frequencies against aspect ratio by varying the bending rigidity. It has been investigated that by increasing the nonlocal parameter decreases the frequencies and on increasing the aspect ratio increases the frequencies for both the tubes. To generate the fundamental natural frequencies of SWCNTs, computer software MATLAB engaged. The numerical results are validated with existing open text. Since the percentage of error is negligible, the model has been concluded as valid.
