PURPOSE: Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) has been shown to improve body function and activity/participation in people with functional dysfunctions. This study evaluates if active exercise using theraband in PNF pattern may induce similar benefits as exercise using manual PNF pattern performed by physiotherapists on promoting mobility, balance and fear of fall in community-dwelling elderly. METHODS: Twenty-three community-dwelling elderly with independent activities of daily living were recruited and randomly allocated into either PNF group - exercise in PNF pattern by trained physiotherapists or Theraband-PNF (T-PNF) group - exercise using theraband in PNF pattern, for an hour, twice weekly for 4 weeks. Functional outcomes such as Timed Up and Go test, Elderly Mobility Scale, Berg balance scale, functional reach and subjective measures including fear of fall (FOF) scale, bodily pain in visual analogue scale were measured pre and post-program. RESULTS: Twenty-one participants completed the program. PNF group demonstrated significant within-group improvements in all subjective measures and objective measures. Similar within-group improvements were demonstrated in all outcome measures except FOFS in T-PNF group. However, no between-group differences were found in any of the outcome measures. CONCLUSION: Comparable improvements in functional outcomes in community dwelling elderly were demonstrated in both groups. As manual PNF exercise traditionally need clinicians' contact and feedback on patient which limit the training to be carried out extensively in community setting. The current findings suggest that exercise using theraband in PNF pattern is feasible to be adopted as self-practice exercise for community-dwelling elderly to induce beneficial effects on functional outcomes.
For screening of the compounds exhibiting antimicrobial activities against the D-alanyl-D-alanine of Gram positive bacteria, approximately 2,500 actinomycetes isolated from soil were examined far antimicrobial activity. In consequence, we recently isolated the Streptomyces sp. G91353 strain produced an active compound, A91353, that inhibits the growth of Gram positive bacteria. A91353 was identified as N-acetyl-phenylalanine by various spectroscopic methods. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of N-acetyl-phenylalanine on Gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes 308A, Streptococcus pyogenes 77A were determined as $50{\mu}g/ml$, respectively, but did not effect on Gram negative strains. These results indicate that N-acetyl-phenylalanine have an antimicrobial activity, which may be caused by the disturbance of D-alanyl-D-alanine synthesis.
The waterborne acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive in the basis of butylacylate (BA) and 2-Ethylhexylacrylate (2-EHA) was synthesized and the methyl methacrylate (MMA) have been used to give the rigidity perfroamce. The polymreric latex was synthesized using butyl acrylate (BA), 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and each 1, 2, 3% of various functional monomers. The dimethyl-2-imidazlidon acrylate and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate was used in order to increase the wetting properties of acrylic emulsion. To study of properties of functional monomer, The polymreric latex was synthesized various functional monomers each 1, 2, 3%. The 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate showed the best properties. Latex with acrylic acid and dimethyl-2-imidazlidon acrylate had good peel strength, holding power, but it showed that they didn't separate from adhered cleanly by weak cohesion strength. The adhesion performance was increased by increasing amount of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate however latexes with upper 7% 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate showed that the properties of PSA decreased.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of light spectrum using red (660 nm), blue (460 nm), red and blue mixed (Red : Blue = 6 : 4) LED (light-emitting diode), and fluorescent lamp on antioxidant activities and functional components of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). Total polyphenol contents in dandelion irradiated with the red and blue mixed or the red LED were 121.77 mg/100 g or 115.36 mg/100 g, respectively, which were greater than those in dandelion treated with blue LED and fluorescent lamp. Asparagine showed the highest content among amino acids in leaves and roots regardless of treatments. Total amino acid was the highest when illuminated with the red LED. DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging activity and SOD (super oxide dismutase) activity of ethanol extracts were increased under all of the LED treatments compared with fluorescent lamp, and the antioxidant activities were increased by the red and the mixed LED illumination. The results indicate that application of the red and the mixed LED illumination promote antioxidant activity and increase functional components during cultivation of dandelion.
Purpose: The purpose of study was to investigate the effects of combination patterns exercise of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) on unstable surfaces on pain, functional disability, and fear avoidance belief in patients with chronic low back pain. Methods: Twenty four patients were assigned to either the experimental group (n=12) or the control group (n=12). Patients in the experimental group performed combination patterns exercise of PNF on unstable surfaces. Patients in the control group performed combination patterns exercise of PNF on stable surfaces. Both exercises were performed for five days per week, for a period of six weeks. Pain was measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Functional disability was measured using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ). Fear avoidance belief was measured using the Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ). A paired t-test was used for determination of differences before and after treatment, and an independent t-test was used for determination of differences between treatment groups. Results: In within group comparison, the experimental group showed statistically significant difference for all variables (p<0.05). In comparison between two groups, the experimental group showed relatively greater significant difference for all variables (p<0.05). Conclusion: Based on such results, it can be said that combination patterns exercise of PNF on unstable surfaces has an effect on pain, functional disability, and fear avoidance belief in patients with chronic low back pain.
Purpose : To evaluate the effect of global scaling analysis on brain activation for sensory and motor functional MR imaging study. Materials and methods : Four normal subjects without abnormal neurological history were included. Arm extension-flexion movement was used for motor function and 1KHz pure tone stimulation was used for auditory function. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed at 3T MRI (GE, Milwaukee, USA) using BOLD-EPI technique and SPM2 was employed for data analysis. On data analysis, the brain activation images were obtained with and without global scaling by fixing other parameters such as motion correction and realignment. Results : The difference in brain activation between no scaling and global scaling was not large in case of right upper extremity movement (p<0.000001). For auditory test, brain activation with global scaling showed larger activation than that of without global scaling (p<0.05). Conclusion : A caution must be taken into account when analyzing functional imaging data with global scaling especially for functional study of small local BOLD signal change.
The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of drive swing on multiple functional wear wearing in golf. The subjects were 6 men ($22.67{\pm}0.82$ yrs, $175.42{\pm}3.42cm$, $78.75{\pm}4.78kg$), who had career each with at least 8 yers golf experience with right-hander. For kinemetical analysis, this study used equipments with 7 motion capture cameras (300Hz) and analysis program (Nexus1.5). The total time of the club head, displacement magnitude of the COM and swing plane were compared of according to functional wear wearing and non-weraing during golf drive swing. The results of the study are as follows. The total time of the club on wearing ($2.18{\pm}0.06sec$) was faster than non-wearing ($2.52{\pm}0.15sec$). Displacement magnitude of the COM on wearing ($4.06{\pm}0.67cm$) was shorter than non-wearing ($5.79{\pm}0.72cm$). Also, swing plane was found to be significantly different of 3 phase excepted BST-DS (back swing top-down swing) phase. AD-BST (address-back swing top) phase on wearing ($13.86{\pm}3.08cm$) decrease more than non-wearing ($20.82{\pm}3.99cm$), DS-IP (down swing-impact) phase on wearing ($6.25{\pm}1.35cm$) decrease more than non-wearing ($7.18{\pm}1.52cm$) and IP-FT (impact-follow though) phase on wearing ($7.93{\pm}2.09cm$) decrease more than non-wearing($9.68{\pm}2.02cm$). The multiple functional wear wearing was contribution to come close for one-plane, a long with consistency and accuracy on golf drive swing.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of functional herbal foods on the growth of intestinal lactic acid bacteria. When Bifidobacterium breve and human intestinal microflora were inoculated in the general anaerobic medium which contained each functional food water extract, most of functional herbal foods induced the growth of lactic acid bacteria by decreasing pH of the broth. The pH decreasing effects of Liriipe platyphylla and Platycodon grandiflorum were excellent. The growth of lactic acid bacteria effectively inhibited the bacterial enzymes, $\beta$-glucosidase and $\beta$ -glucuronidase. Eugenia caryophyllata and Liriipe platyphylla potently inhibited the productivity of P -glucosidase of B. breve and human intestinal bacteria. Cinnamomum cassia, Gardenia jasminoides and Platycodon grandiflorum potently inhibited the productivity of $\beta$-glucuronidase of human intestinal bacteria. The growth component isolated from Platycodon grandiflorum was sucrose (compound B).

The interaction of cytochrome c with binary phospholipid mixtures was investigated by solid-state $^2H$- and $^{31}P$-NMR. To examine the effect of the interaction on the glycerol backbones, the glycerol moieties of phosphatidylcholine (PC), and cardioliph (CL) were specifically deuterated. On the binding of cytochrome c to the binary mixed bilayers, no changes in the quadrupole splittings of each of the components were observed for the PC/PG, PE/CL and PE/PG liposomes. In contrast, the splittings of CL decreased on binging of protein to the PC/CL liposomes, although those of PC did not change at all. This showed that cytochrome c specifically interacts with CL in PC/CL bilayers, and penetrates into the lipid bilayer to some extent so as to perturb the dynamic structure of the glycerol backbone. This is distinctly different from the mode of interaction of cytochrome c with other binary mixed bilayers. In the $^{31}P$-NMR spectra, line broadening and a decrease of the chemical shift anisotropy were observed on the binding of cytochrome c for all binary mixed bilayers that were examined. These changes were more significant for the PC/CL bilayers. Furthermore, the line broadening is more significant for PC than for CL in PC/CL bilayers. Therefore, it can be concluded that with the polar head groups, not only CL but also PC are involved in the interaction with cytochrome c.
Purpose - This study is to investigate the effects of consumption motives of restaurant customers on the perception of the importance of restaurant attributes, and to determine the influence of the consumption motives on the empirical and functional attributes between Vietnam and Korea. Research design, data, and methodology - Questionnaire items from previous studies were revised to fit the research purpose of the present study. From August 1 to August 25, 2017, questionnaires were simultaneously administered in Korea and Vietnam using both on-line and off-line survey methods (including SNS and e-mail). With 381 surveyed questionnaires in Vietnam(219) and Korea(162), this study was conducted by using SPSS 22.0 to verify the reliability and validity of the measured variables. Structural equation model (SEM) was employed as a statistical method for the hypotheses test of this study. Results - The results showed that hedonic eating-out motive has more influence on the importance of empirical attribute than that of functional attribute in restaurant. In addition, utilitarian eating-out motive has more influence on functional attributes than empirical attributes. However, these relationships showed the difference between countries in Vietnam and Korea. As for in Korea, consumers' hedonic and utilitarian motives of eating-out were more influential on experimental and functional attributes. Conclusions - This study analyzed the influence on the importance of the eating-out motives of restaurant attributes and how this differed between Vietnamese and Korean.
