  • Roll-to-roll process is an emerging mass production method for printed and flexible electronics such as touch screen panel, RFID tag, thin film solar cell, and flexible display due to its high throughput. High precision in printing and coating is required to apply functional materials onto substrate. For such reason, every part of the roll-to-roll equipment needs to be precisely fabricated and to retain its precision under regular operation. In this article, the precision of cantilever type idler roller and a novel method to mitigate its deflection under web tension loading are discussed and the method is verified using both the numerical and the experimental works. The proposed method improves the structural rigidity of cantilever type roller whose advantages, such as low capital cost and high web path configurability, are maintained.

Effect of Edible Coatings Containing Soy Protein Isolate (SPI) on the Browning and Moisture Content of Cut Fruit and Vegetables

  • Effectiveness of edible coatings containing soy protein isolate (SPI), in reducing oxidative browning and moisture loss during storage ($4^{\circ}C$) of cut apples, potatoes, carrots, and onions was investigated. The SPI coatings were shown to have antioxidative activity. Furthermore, addition of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to the formulations significantly improved its antioxidative activity. Oxidative discoloration, as determined by Commission Internationale De I'Eclairage (CIE) lightness ($L^*$), redness ($a^*$), and yellowness ($b^*$) color scale, was significantly reduced (p <0.05) by SPI coating treatments over a storage time of 120 min. Loss of lightness was reduced by SPI coatings with and without CMC. These respectively showed 4.03 and 3.71% change of $L^*$ value compared to 8.56% for control. Browning of the control in cut potatoes was significantly increased by 106.6% in contrast to 34.3 and 35.2% for SPI coatings with and without CMC, respectively. The $b^*$ values also reflected effectiveness of SPI. Moisture barrier effect was significantly better for the treatments, compared to the control. SPI coatings reduced moisture loss in apples and potatoes, respectively, by 21.3 and 29.6% over the control. Cut onions did not show any treatment effect both in terms of browning and moisture loss. SPI coatings prove to be good moisture barrier and antioxidative property.

  • Mulching technique is used to control the temperature and moisture content of soil by covering the ground surface. Most kinds of mulching film are made of polyethylene which is non-biodegradable synthetic polymer. Utilizing these films has been one of the main sources in soil pollution. Thus residual films under the ground should be removed after a certain period of time. Therefore, an alternative mulching material made of biodegradable functional paper is considered instead of non-biodegradable films. The mulching sheet produced from paper basis has a functionality to be naturally degraded and then recycled to the bio-materials on soil. In this study, the paper based-mulching sheet coated with biodegradable polymer was specially produced using a laboratory bar coater. Coating colors prepared by dissolving PBS/PLA in chloroform were applied to kraft paper. The mechanical strength and aging properties of this mulching sheet were investigated. The burst strength of polymer-coated paper was decreased with the increase of the PBS ratio in PBS/PLA blends, and, in particular, 30/70 blending condition led to good stability in heat-aging atmosphere for 60 days.

TiO2 Nanotubes Fabricated by Atomic Layer Deposition for Solar Cells

  • Titanium (IV) dioxide (TiO2) is one of the most attractive d-block transition metal functional oxides. Many applications of TiO2 such as dye-sensitized solar cells and photocatalyst have been widely investigated. To utilize solar energy efficiently, TiO2 should be well-aligned with a high surface area and promote the charge separation as well as electron transport. Herein, the TiO2 nanotubes were successfully fabricated by a template-directed method. The electrospun PEO(Polyethylene oxide, Molecular weight, 400k)fibers were used as a soft template for coating with titanium dioxide using an atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. The deposition was conducted onto a template at 50$^{\circ}C$ by using titaniumisopropoxide [Ti(OCH(CH3)2)4; TTIP] as precursors of TiO2. While the as-deposited TiO2 layers onto PEO fibers were completely amorphous with atomic layer deposition, the TiO2 layers after calcination at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h were properly converted into polycrystalline nanostructured hallow TiO2 nanotube. The TiO2 nanotube with high surface area can be easily handled and reclaimed for use in future applications related to solar cell fabrications.

  • The cinnamoyl esters of polyresorcinol-formaldehyde glycidyl ether (RGEFC) with photosensitive functional group were prepared. Photosensitivity of RGEFC were investigated by the change of solubility before and after exposure to light. Various samples coated on glass plates were exposed to light under various conditions and steeped in the same solvent as used for coating, and then the yield of residual film was calculated. The yield of the residual film which was closely related to the sensitivity of the film, was affected by the degree of polymerization of the backbone resin, sensitizers and their concentration. The sensitivity was depended upon the degree of polymerization. Most effective sensititizer for RGEFC among the sensitizers used was 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline.

  • Electroplating of Ag and Au on the functional area of lead frames are required for good bonding ability in IC packaging. As the patterns of the lead frame become finer, development of new deposition technology has been required for solving problems associated with process control for uniform thickness on selected area. Sputtering was employed to investigate the adhesion between substrate Alloy42 and Ag film as a new candidate process alternative to conventional electroplating. Coating thickness of Ag film was controlled to 3.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ at room temperature as a reference. The deposition of film was optimized to ensure the adhesion by process parameters of substrate heating temperature at $100~300^{\circ}C$, sputter etching time at -300V for 10~30min, bias voltage of -100~-500V, and existence of Cr interlayer film of $500\AA$. The critical $load L_{c}$ /, defined as the minimum load at which initial damage occurs, was the highest up to 29N at bias voltage of -500V by scratch test. AFM surface image and AES depth profile were investigated to analyze the interface. The effect of bias voltage in sputtering was to improve the surface roughness and remove the oxide on Alloy42.

Study on the Improvement of Light Transmittance of Polyester Film (폴리에스터 필름의 광투과도 향상에 대한 연구)

  • Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) base films with high light transmittance have been used for the substrate of various functional films in the flat panel display. The effects of the reflective index of coated films, the roughness of the film surface and the content of inorganic silica particles on the light transmittance were studied in this article. Light transmittance was increased by coating a water soluble resin with a low reflective index at an optimum thickness. The roughness of the film did not affect light transmittance when the Ra of the film surface was less than a quarter of the wavelength of incident light. Inorganic silica particles decreased light transmittance due to their absorbance and scattering of the incident light.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of the use of the western building system with the change of the architectural design in the Japanese colonial period focused on the facility built by Joseon Government-General in 1910s. Through the 131 cases of governmental building, the tendency of the use of western building system. After 1910, Japanese Imperialism adopted the western wooden building system which main structure was made with combination of small pieces of timber for building the modern governmental facility because of the political and financial intention. So, all facilities were designed similarly by the structural module and the facade was finished by the feather boarding in the same with the 'sitamitakei-giyohu' in Japan. the functional requirements of each facility was not revealed. Such an western wooden building system was used until 1920s with the change of the facade by the mortar coating. But, in 1920s-1930s, the building system have begun to change. The use of the brick system caused some changes although the planing concept was still lasted. On the other hand, the use of the reinforced concrete led to more changes on the overall scheme.

Synthesis and Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2/BiVO4 Layered Films under Visible Light Irradiation

  • $TiO_2/BiVO_4$ layered films were prepared by sol-gel and spin coating methods. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Uv-vis spectroscopy were used to investigate the crystal structure, morphology and ultraviolet-visible absorption of the $TiO_2/BiVO_4$ films. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared films was inspected according to the degradation of methylene blue. The results show that the prepared films present a net chain structure; the absorption band edge had obvious red shift. The degradation of the methylene blue solution was about 80% after 300 mins using $TiO_2/BiVO_4$ layered films under visible light, which was stronger than when using only pure $TiO_2$ film and $BiVO_4$ film.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the properties of the functional gradient thermal barrier coatings by plasma spray process. The evaluations of mechanical and thermal properties such as fatigue, oxidation and wear-resistance at high temperatures have been conducted. Furthermore, residual stress and bond strength have been evaluated. The range of thickness of coated layers was 550~600$\mu\textrm{m}$. The range of hardness of layers was 800~900 Hv and the porosity range of coatings was about 7 to 14%. The top coating layer of $ZrO_2$ in thermal barrier was composed of tetragonal structure after spraying. The coated layers of $ZrO_2$ on the Inconel substrate is the best resistance for thermal fatigue. Those coatings had the least compressive stress in comparison with other coatings. In high temperature oxidation test, the coatings on Inconel substrate was better than the coatings on SUS substrate. The bond strength of the concave type was greater than that of linear types and convex types coatings.
