  • This paper discusses the use of the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique for the displacement and strain measurements of a wet lay-up composite wing. As opposed to classical strain gages, DIC allows to conduct full field strain analysis of simple to complex structural parts. In this work, wing-up bending tests and measurements of the composite wing of the Dardo Aspect by CFM Air are carried out through an ad-hoc test rig and the Q-400 DIC system by Dantec Dynamics. Also, the results are used to validate a finite element model of the structure under investigation.

  • The applicability of the field-consistency paradigm, which was originally employed for analysis of locking due to constrained energy having the second power of a strain, is extended to the constrained energy having a quadratic form of strain. For the extension, nearly-incompressible plane strain problem is considered by introducing the concept of reduced minimization. The field-consistent analysis of the plane strain problem leads to a clear and systematic understanding on the relation amongst constraints imposed on element, spurious constraint -free optimal points, and integration order used.

  • When the important structures or components of agricultural machinery are designed, the full-filed methods of stress analysis can provide enough information in order to obtain lighter weight and prevent failure. The photoelasticity has been applicated to solve many practical engineering problems. The coating method provides full-field information, enabling the engineers to determine the complete distribution of surface strains and directly highlighting severely strained areas, especially for the welded frames of agricultural machinery. A combined method of model and prototype for strain analysis of excavator has been successfully applied to improve design. A measuring and recording system controlled by micro-computer and application software for dynamic event was studied. It can be widely used in structural failure analysis under cyclical loading . Typical application concerned stress field of crack tip and failure analysis of some mechanical structures are introduced are in roduced briefly in this paper.

  • In the present paper we report the results of a study into Friction Stir Welds (FSWs) made in 13 mm-thick 12%-Cr steel plates. Based on residual strains obtained by diffraction techniques, eigenstrain analysis was performed using the Eigenstrain Reconstruction Method (ERM), which is a novel methodology for the reconstruction of full-field residual strain and stress distributions within engineering components. Significant eigenstrain distributions were found at around Thermo-Mechanically Affected Zone (TMAZ) where the most severe plastic deformation was occurred. Microstructure analysis was used to elucidate this phenomenon showing that the grain structure in TMAZ was bent and not successfully recrystallised, resulting in severe deformation behaviour. The reconstructed residual strain distributions by the ERM agree well with the experimental results. It was found that the approach based on theory of eigenstrain is a powerful basis for reconstructing the full-field residual strain/stress distributions in engineering components and structures.

  • PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to analyze and evaluate the behavior of orthotropic steel bridge deck pavement using three-dimensional finite element analysis and full-scale wheel load testing. METHODS: Since the layer thickness and material properties used in the bridge deck pavement are different from its condition, it is very difficult to measure and access the behavior of bridge deck pavement in the field. To solve this problem, the full-scale wheel load testing was conducted on the PSMA/Mastic bridge deck pavement and the deflection of bridge deck and horizontal tensile strain on top of pavement were measured under the loading condition. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to predict the behavior of bridge deck pavement and the predicted deflection and tensile strain values are compared with measured values from the wheel loading testing. RESULTS: Test results showed that the predicted deflections are 10% lower than measured ones and the error between predicted and measured horizontal tensile strain values is less than 2% in the critical location. CONCLUSIONS: The fact indicates that the proposed the analysis is found to be accurate for estimating the behavior of bridge deck pavements.

  • A new solution for the dynamic analysis of as asphalt concrete pavements under moving loads has been developed. The asphalt concrete pavement can be modeled in elastic or viscoelastic medium of multi-layered structure. The subgrade can be modeled as either a rigid base or a semi-infinite halfspace. The loads may be constant or arbitrary circular loads into one direction. The method utilizes the Complex Response Method of transient analysis with a continuum solution in the horizontal direction and a finite-element solution in the vertical direction. This proposed method incorporates such important factors as wave propagation, inertia and damping effects of the medium as well as frequency-dependent asphalt concrete properties. The proposed method has been validted with the full-scale field truck test, which was conducted on instrumented asphalt concrete section on a test track at PACCAR Technical Center in Mount Vernon, Washington. Comparison with field strain data from full-scale pavement tests has shown excellent agreement. Theoretical results have shown that the effect of vehicle speed is significant and that it is in part due to the frequency-dependent

  • In this paper, identification of isotropic and orthotropic linear elastic material constitutive parameters has been demonstrated by a FEA-free energy-based inverse analysis method. An important feature of the proposed method is that it requires no finite element (FE) simulation of the tested material. Full-field displacements calculated using digital image correlation (DIC) are used to compute DIC stress fields enforcing the equilibrium condition and DIC strain fields using interpolation functions. Boundary tractions and displacements are implicitly recast into an objective function that measures the energy residual of external work and internal elastic strain energy. The energy conservation principle states that the residual should be zero, and so minimizing this objective function inversely identifies the constitutive parameters. Synthetic data from simulated testing of isotropic materials and orthotropic composite materials under 2D plane stress conditions are used for verification of the proposed method. When identifying the constitutive parameters, it is beneficial to apply loadings in multiple directions, and in ways that create non-uniform stress distributions. The sensitivity of the parameter identification method to noise in both the measured full-field DIC displacements and loadings has been investigated.

  • This paper describes the feasibility of compacting subgrade layer in thicker lifts than currently permitted as 20 cm. This project involved constructing and testing a full scale test section in highway. Soil stiffness in field was evaluated by a nondestructive testing method, called Geogage. Quality control tests and FE Analysis were also conducted. Typical dynamic compaction roller of 11ton weight is applied for full scale test and a Mohr-Coulomb model and Plane strain condition are used for FE Analysis. The results showed that compaction-induced stress and dissipated energy are mainly depend on depth of soil and it could be possible to increase thickness of a lift.

  • Structural design of the vertical displacements and shear strains in the earth fill (EF) dams has great importance in the structural engineering problems. Moreover, far fault earthquakes have significant seismic effects on seismic damage performance of EF dams like the near fault earthquakes. For this reason, three dimensional (3D) earthquake damage performance of Oroville dam is assessed considering different far-fault ground motions in this study. Oroville Dam was built in United States of America-California and its height is 234.7 m (770 ft.). 3D model of Oroville dam is modelled using FLAC3D software based on finite difference approach. In order to represent interaction condition between discrete surfaces, special interface elements are used between dam body and foundation. Non-reflecting seismic boundary conditions (free field and quiet) are defined to the main surfaces of the dam for the nonlinear seismic analyses. 6 different far-fault ground motions are taken into account for the full reservoir condition of Oroville dam. According to nonlinear seismic analysis results, the effects of far-fault ground motions on the nonlinear seismic settlement and shear strain behaviour of Oroville EF dam are determined and evaluated in detail. It is clearly seen that far-fault earthquakes have very significant seismic effects on the settlement-shear strain behaviour of EF dams and these earthquakes create vital important seismic damages on the swelling behaviour of dam body surface. Moreover, it is proposed that far-fault ground motions should not be ignored while modelling EF dams.

  • This paper presents a method for the nonlinear analysis of beam elements subjected to the cyclical combined actions of torsion, biaxial flexure and axial forces based on an extension of the disturbed compression field (DSFM). The theoretical model is based on a hybrid formulation between the full rotation of the cracks model and the fixed direction of the cracking model. The described formulation, which treats cracked concrete as an orthotropic material, includes a new approach for the evaluation of the re-orientation of both the compression field and the deformation field by removing the restriction of their coincidence. A new equation of congruence permits evaluating the deformation of the middle line. The problem consists in the solution of coupled nonlinear simultaneous equations expressing equilibrium, congruence and the constitutive laws. The proposed method makes it possible to determine the deformations of the beam element according to the external stresses applied.
