In this study we investigated the regeneration methods for the lean $NO_x$ trap (LNT) catalyst in a 2.2L direct injection diesel engine. The regeneration methods were 1) in-cylinder post fuel injection and 2) external fuel injection strategy. The in-cylinder post fuel injection method uses in-cylinder injectors with the addition of the post fuel injection to supply enough reductants such as CO, $H_2$, THC. The external fuel injection method was enabled by installing a fuel injector with a wide spray angle before the LNT catalyst. Through the engine experiment, the $NO_x$ conversion efficiency, the amount of reductant exhaust gases, fuel consumption, and temperature behavior in the LNT catalyst were evaluated and compared for the two regeneration methods.

Using Diesel-Water Emulsion fuel in commercial diesel engine can reduce NOx and soot when it is injected through the injector. Because water in Diesel-Water Emulsion fuel is vaporized ahead of diesel particle and it cause decrease of combustion temperature. Furthermore, research about the possibility of applicating Diesel-Water Emulsion fuels to commercial diesel engine is demanded in order to prove that Diesel-Water Emulsion fuel is able to apply commercial diesel engine without any replacement of equipments. This research analyzed applicable possibility of Diesel-Water Emulsion fuels to commercial diesel engine's fuel injection system refering injection and spray characteristics. In this research, there are 3 experiments, that is injection quantity, spray visualization, and injection rate. Diesel-Water Emulsion fuel has less injection quantities compared to diesel fuel, and spray penetration length is more longer than diesel. Furthermore, emulsion fuels have less dispersed than diesel fuel. In conclusion, comparing with diesel fuel with only spray characteristics, Diesel-Water Emulsion fuel has bad effects about dispersion and vaporization.

The PFI dual injection engine using one injector per an intake port was developed for solving the DISI engine cost problem. Excellent fuel atomization and targeting of the PFI dual injection engine made enhancement on the fuel efficiency and engine power. In order to develop a PFI dual injection engine, characteristics of the in-cylinder flow and fuel behavior with respect to fuel injection angle and cone angle of the PFI dual injection engine was investigated. Numerical calculation was conducted to analyze 3D unsteady in-cylinder flow and fuel behavior using STAR-CD. The engine operating condition was 2,000rpm at WOT. As a result, the amount of intake air, evaporated fuel and fuel film according to injection angle and cone angle were presented. The results were influenced by interaction between injected fuel and intake port wall.

Combustion and fuel distribution characteristics of heavy duty engine with the liquid phase LPG injection(LPLI) were studied in a single cylinder engine, Swirl ratio were varied between 1.2, 2.3, and 3.4 following Ricardo swirl number(Rs) definition, Rs=2.3 showed the best results with lower cycle-by-cycle variation and shorter burning duration in the lean region while strong swirl(Rs=3.4) made these worse for combustion enhancement. Excessive swirl resulted in reverse effects due to high heat transfer and initial flame kernel quenching. Fuel injection timings were categorized with open valve injection(OVI) and closed valve injection(CVI). Open valve injection showed shorter combustion duration and extended lean limit. The formation of rich mixture in the spark plug vicinity was achieved by open valve injection. With higher swirl strength(Rs=3.4) and open valve injection, the cloud of fuel followed the flow direction and the radial air/fuel mixing was limited by strong swirl flow. It was expected that axial stratification was maintained with open-valve injection if the radial component of the swirling motion was stronger than the axial components. The axial fuel stratification and concentration were sensitive to fuel injection timing in case of Rs=3.4 while those were relatively independent of the injection timing in case of Rs=2.3.

The effects of fuel injection nozzle hole on the NOx emission and fuel oil consumption of medium speed diesel engine HYUNDAI HiMSEN 6H21/32 engine are investigated by engine performance simulation. The results of performance simulation are verified by experimental results of NOx omission fuel oil consumption, cylinder pressure, and heat release rate according to the variation of the number of fuel injection nozzle hole and engine load. The performance simulations are also carried out to optimize the fuel injection nozzle of 6H21/32 engine in respect to the NOx emission and fuel oil consumption. The engine performance measurements are performed to verify the results of performance simulation and to investigate the effects of fuel injection nozzle on engine performance. The results of measurement indicate that significant NOx reduction can be achieved with minimum deterioration in fuel oil consumption by optimizing the geometry of fuel injection nozzle on 6H21/32 engine.
The characteristics of engine performance with fuel injection system in D.I. diesel engine were studied in this paper. A fuel injection system has an important role in the performance and emission gas in a diesel engine. In this paper, an experimental study has been performed to verify the effect of the performance and the emission gas with the factors such as diameters of an injection nozzle hole, diameters of an injection pipe and injection timing in the fuel injection system. The authors have obtained the results that optimizing the factors of fuel injection system is significant to enhance the performance of the engine system and consumption ratio of fuel, smoke, and NOx.

This paper describes the engine performance and combustion characteristics of a CRDI diesel engine, operated by electronically controlled diesel fuel injector with variable injection timing. This experiment focused on fuel injection timing and pressure about combustion characteristics of CRDI diesel engine. EGR was excepted because it would be furtherly analyzed with additional experiments. The experiment was conducted under the circumstance of engine torque for 4, 8, 12 and 16 kgf-m and fuel injection timing for $15^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$ and $5^{\circ}$ BTDC, at the engine speed of 1100, 1400, 1700 and 2000 rpm. Fuel injection was controlled to retard or advance initiation of the injection event by electronically controlled fuel injection unit injector on the personal computer. When fuel was injected into the cylinders of a CRDI diesel engine it would go through ignition delay before starting of combustion. Therefore, fuel injection timing of CRDI diesel engine had a significant effect upon performance and combustion characteristics. Depending on the injection timing the fuel consumption rate following the rotational speed and torque was 3~78 g/psh (1.7~30.6%). The range of fuel injection timing that resulted in low fuel consumption overall was BTDC 15-10 degrees.

The stability of diffusion flame formed behind a bluff body with fuel injection slits was experimentally investigated in various fuel injection angles, fuel injection ratios, grids and extension ducts. The flame stability limits, temperature distributions and length of recirculation zones, direct photographs of flames were measured in order to discuss the stabilization mechanism of the diffusion flame. The results from this study are as follows. The fuel injection angle is an important factor in determining the flame stability. Stability limits can be improved by variety of the fuel injection ratio. When the grid and extension duct are set, stability characteristics are varied with the blockage ratios, grid intervals, and grid numbers. The recirculation zone not only serves as a steady ignition source of combustion stream but also governs the stabilization mechanism.

This study was carried out to improve the design of fuel injection pump for marine medium diesel engine. For this purpose, all parts of fuel injection pump were modeled and simulated using CATIA V5R19, FLUENT & MSC Nastran. Flow analysis for plunger cylinder and structural analysis for plunger, roller and spring, which were considered as essential parts of fuel injection pump, were performed to find the optimal design of fuel injection pump. As the results, flow of fluid in plunger cylinder was showed good results in case of 7.7~8.0m/s of plunger velocity. Furthermore, it was confirmed that plunger, roller and spring could be operated safely under 1,800bar pressure.
The aim of this study was to compare the spray characteristics of a typical fuel (100% diesel, DME) and diesel-DME blended fuel in a constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC). The typical fuel (100% diesel, DME) and diesel-DME blended fuel spray characteristics were investigated at various ambient pressures (pressurized nitrogen) and fuel injection pressures using a common rail fuel injection system when the fuel mixture ratio was varied. The fuel injection quantity and spray characteristics were measured including spray shape, penetration length, and spray angle. Common types of injectors were used.
