catalytic combustion is accomplished by the chemical reaction between fuel and oxidizer at the catalyst surface, different from conventional combustion. Therefore, it is important that the fuel and air stream are well mixed and supplied uniformly prior to the combustion region. If the flow is maldistributed, a hot spot may occur that can lead to subsequent catalyst and substrate damage. Therefore, in order to enhance the mixing and flow uniformity, in this study, the perforated plate is used. A numerical simulation is performed to investigate the variation of flow characteristics by changing various parameters. Under each condition, the uniformity of the flow stream at the entrance of the catalyst section is evaluated and compared. The results show that the uniformity can be effectively improved for most of the case by using the well-designed perforated plates.

In this study, computational simulation was performed to investigate the characteristics of air/fuel mixing according to the shape of the injector exit when the transverse jet was injected into a supersonic flow. Non-reacting flow simulation was conducted with fixed mass flow rate and the same cross-sectional area. To validate the results, free stream Mach number and jet-to-crossflow memetum ratio are set to 3.38 and 1.4, respectively, which is same as the experimental condition. Further, separation region, structure of the under-expended jet, jet penetration height, and flammable region of hydrogen for five different injectors compared.

An experimental study investigates the flame response characteristics of non-premixed flame and premixed flame. Air was used as the oxidant. Hydrogen($H_2$)/methane($CH_4$) was used as the fuel, and the mixing ratio of the fuel was 50/50%. Flame response characteristics for various velocity perturbations were experimented. The flame images was acquired using the OH fluorescence measurement and the images were digitized using MatLab code. The results of the premixed flame show that flame perturbation increases as the oscillation amplitude increases. As the amplitude increases, the gain value of the flame transfer function is observed to be a linear behavior. The flame length of a nonpremixed flame decreases as the oscillation amplitude increases. Also, it was confirmed that the gain value according to the amplitude behaves nonlinearly.

The PWR Nuclear Fuel assembly consists of more than 250 fuel rods that are supported by leaf springs in the cells of more than 10 Spacer Grids (SG) along the rod length. Since it is not easy to conduct mechanical tests on a full-scale model basis, the small-scaled rod bundle (5$\times$5) is generally used for various performance tests during the development stage. As one of the small-scaled tests, a flow test should be carried out in order to verify the performance of the spacer grid like the coolant mixing performance and to obtain the Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) characteristics of the rod bundle over the specified flow range. A vibration test should be also performed to obtain the modal parameters of the bundle prior to the flow test. In this study, we want to develop the estimation procedure of the damping ratio for the small scaled test bundle. For the damping factor of the rod bundle and the grid case at the first vibration mode, as one of the vibration tests, a so-called pluck testing has been performed in air as a preliminary test prior to in-flow damping measurement test. Logarithmic decrement method is used for calculation of the damping ratio. Estimated damping ratio of the rod bundle is about 0.7% with reasonable error of 2% for the previous results. Nonlinear behavior of the rod bundle might be stem mainly Iron the rod-grid support configuration.
Hydrogen-fueled gas turbines are a promising technology that can resolve the carbon dioxide emission issue as future aviation propulsion engines and carbon-free power generations. To achieve high efficiency and stability of gas turbines using 100% hydrogen as fuel, an innovative design of combustor systems is necessary to consider the characteristics of hydrogen, which are different from those of conventional hydrocarbon fuels. Micromix is a combustor design method, which aims to terminate the reaction quickly by intense mixing of fuel and air, consequently reducing NOx and increasing the stability. In this paper, we examine the principles and design process of micromix combustors as a pure-hydrogen combustion technology, and we introduce a design of a 30 kW micromix hydrogen combustor for research.
Computational flow dynamics(CFD) has been frequently applied to the waste incinerators to understand the flow performance for various design and operating parameters. Though it needs many simplifications and complicated flow models, the reasonability of its results is not fully evaluated. For example, the inlet condition is calculated from an arbitrarily assumed properties of combustion gas release from the waste bed, since the combustion in the bed is difficult to be predicted. In this study, the computational modeling and calculation procedures of CFD for the grate type waste incinerator were evaluated using comparative simulations. Though the assumption method on the generation of the combustion gas directly affected the temperature and gas species concentrations, the overall flow pattern was dominated by the secondary air jets. The gaseous reaction could be included by assuming the release of the products of incomplete combusion from the bed. However, the reaction effficiency cannot not be directly evaluated from the species concentration, since it is not possible to simulate the actual co-existence of fuel rich or oxygen rich puffs over the bed. In predicting the turbulence, the higher order model, such as Reynolds stress model, gave difference shape of local recirculation zones, but similar results was acquired from the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. Introducing radiation model was required for accurate temperature prediction, but it also caused heat imbalance due to the fixed temperature of the inlet, i.e. the waste bed. Thus, the computational modeling procedures on incinerators and the analysis of the predicted results should be progressed carefully. Though not validated experimentally, current simulation method is capable of comparative evaluation on the flow-related parameters such as the furnace shape and secondary air injection using identical inlet conditions. Quantitative analysis using measures of the residence time and mixing is essential to compare the flow performance efficiently.

This paper studies the aerodynamic performance that the vent mixer-new conceptual supersonic mixer-showed with its geometric characteristics. The hole is 2 mm with 2 mm's distance from the wall in case 1 and with no distance in case 2. In case 3 die hole is 1 mm. Case 1 and case 2 showed the same total pressure recovery ratio, of which the case 3 was lower than that. While cases 1-3 had the same reattachment length, the shear layer was thicker in cases 1 and 2 than in case 3. Within the recirculation zone, cases 1 and 2 had lower pressure loss and higher velocity gradient difference than case 3-they enhance mixing between air and fuel. Separation bubble which is developed by the inflow into the recirculation zone has a significant effect on the total pressure recovery ratio in the combustor. Also separation bubble influences pressure distributions and recirculation flows in the recirculation zone. Therefore, inflow rate of air into the recirculation zone mainly affects the performance of vent mixer.

Recently, an air-lift bio-reactor operated by micro bubbles has been utilized to product hydrogen fuel. To enhance the performance, characteristics of hydrodynamics inside the bio-reactor were analyzed using a numerical simulation for two-phase flow. An Eulerian model was employed for both of liquid and gas phases. The standard k-ε model was used for turbulence induced by micro bubbles. A Population Balance Model was employed to consider size distribution of bubbles. A hollow cylinder was introduced at the center of the reactor to reduce a dead area which disturbs circulation of CO bubbles. An appropriate diameter of the draft tube and hollow cylinder were optimized for better performance of the bio-reactor. The optimum model could be obtained when the cross-sectional area ratio of the hollow cylinder to the reactor, and the width ratio of the riser to the downcomer approached 0.4 and 3.5, respectively. Consequently, it is expected that the optimum model could enhance the performance of the bio-reactor with the homogeneous distribution and higher density of CO, and more effective mixing.
To investigate numerically the effects of geometry and location of vertical opening on the thermal and chemical fire characteristics in full-scale under-ventilated compartment fires, the ventilation factor ($A\sqrt{h}$) to estimate a theoretical maximum inflow of ambient air and the mass loss rate in a heptane pool fire were fixed for all cases. It was shown that variations in door geometry affected significantly the change in thermal and chemical characteristics inside the compartment. Variations in window location resulted in the complex change in additional fire characteristics including the fire duration time and recirculating flow structure. These results were analyzed in details by the multi-dimensional flow and fire characteristics including the vent flow and fuel/air mixing phenomena.

This paper studies the effects of intake port configuration on the swirl that is key parameter in the flow field of direct injection diesel engines. In-cylinder flow characteristics is known to have significant effects on fuel air mixing, combustion and emissions. To investigate the swirl flow generated by various intake ports, steady state flow tests were conducted to evaluate the swirl. Helical port geometry, SCV shape and bypass were selected as the design parameters to increase the swirl flow and parametric study was performed to choose the optimal port shape that would generate a high swirl ratio efficiently. The results revealed that a key factor in generating a high swirl ratio was to suitably control the direction of the intake air flow passing through the valve seat. For these purposes, we changed the distance of helical and tangential port as well as installed bypass near the valve seat and the effects of intake port geometry on in-cylinder flow field were visualized by a laser sheet visualization method. From the experimental results, we found that the swirl ratio and mass flow rate had a trade off relation. In addition, the result indicates that the bypass is a effective method to increase the swirl ratio without sacrificing mass flow rate.
