  • Noncatalytic partial oxidation of methane for producing synthesis gas was studied in a lab-scale experimental apparatus. Partial oxidation developed for high-temperature, fuel-rich combustion and it is exothermic process. but Steam reforming and Caron reforming is highly endothermic process to need much energy. Noncatalytic partial oxidation of methane is affected by temperature and equivalent ratio, so we studied effect about composition of synthesis gas at lab scale reactor. We used electronic heater to control the temperature of reactor. The quality of synthesis gas is improved and reduced heat value to require at Noncatalytic partial oxidation because the reacting temperature is lower at oxy condition.

  • This work discusses the numerical analysis, the design and experimental test of the SMA actuator along with its capabilities and limitations. Convective heating and cooling using water actuate the SMA(Shape memory alloy) element of the actuator. The fuel such as propane, having a high energy density, is used as the energy source for the SMA actuator in order to increase power and energy density of the system, and thus in order to obviate the need for electrical power supplies such as batteries. The system is composed of a pump, valves, bellows, a heater(burner), control unit and a displacement amplification device. The experimental test of the SMA actuator system results in 150 MPa stress(force : 1560 N) with $3\%$ strain and 0.5 Hz. actuation frequency. The actuation frequency is compared with the prediction obtained from numerical analysis. For the designed SMA actuator system, the results of numerical analysis were utilized in determining design parameters and operating conditions.

보온터널 난방을 위한 온수난방용 코일튜브 열교환기의 열전달 특성 (Heat Transfer Characteristics of Coil Tube Heat Exchanger for Hot Water Heating of Greenhouse Thermal Tunnel)

  • Greenhouse horticulture in South Korea covered about 52,000 ha in 2005. Greenhouse area of about 12,000 ha has been heated during winter season with heating cost of $20{\sim}40%$ of total Production cost. Farmers engaged in greenhouse horticulture were changed into aged people. Therefore the laborsaving of working process and the saving of greenhouse heating cost should be accomplished simultaneously to increase income of greenhouse horticulture. The best method for saving of greenhouse heating cost is to install thermal tunnels into greenhouse. Then hot air heaters using fossil fuel should be changed into hot water heaters. In other words air heating using forced convection should be changed into natural convection system. In this research coil tube made of flexible PE pipe was designed as hot water heat exchanger and its heat exchanging characteristics were analyzed. This new heat exchanger has been adopted as a natural convection system for hot water heating of greenhouse horticulture.

  • Suddenly increasing numbers of automobiles result in making worse air pollution problems. In particular, the emissions from automobiles affect badly on atmosphere. Nowadays, research on catalyst converter and filter trap as a modem technology is very active because PM is designated as a major cancer material and stringent regulations on this are necessary and required. The ceramic filter is very efficient in reducing particular materials up to 80-90% and is evaluated as a very efficient after-treatment technology. However, it comes with decreased engine performance due to increased back-pressure occurred by thermal crack. In order to solve these problems, several methods are proposed such as fuel additive, electric heater and burner types. This experimental study has been conducted with equipped and unequipped a ceramic filter on a displacement 11,000cc diesel engine and compared in terms of engine performance and emission. To measure the emission, D-13 mode is applied and measured quantities of the exhaust gases, particularly in CO, HC, PM, and NOx. Therefore, this research is focused on the basic mechanism and characteristics on harmful materials generated by ceramic filter.

고온, 고속기류 중에 수직 분사되는 연료제트의 분무 및 연소특성 (Characteristics of the Spray and Combustion in the Liquid Jet)

  • In this paper, spray and combustion characteristics of a liquid-fueled ramjet engine were experimentally investigated. The spray penetrations were measured to clarify the spray characteristics of a liguid jet injected transversely into the subsonic vitiated airstream, which is maintained a high velocity and temperature. The spray penetrations are increased with decreasing airstream velocity, increasing airstream temperature, and increasing air-fuel momentum ratio. To compensate our results of penetrations, the new experimental equation were modified from Inamura's equation. In the case of insufficient penetration, the combustion phenomenon in ram-combustor were unstable. Therefore, the temperature distribution was slanted to the low wall of the ram-combustor. These trends gradually disappeared as the length and air temperature of the combustor became longer. Combustion efficiency increased when the length of the combustor was long and the air temperature was high. Especially, stable flame region is enlarged when the length of the combustor was long and the air temperature was high. Type Abstract here. Type Abstract here.

  • The circulating fluidized bed boiler has an advantage that can burn a variety of fuels from low-grade fuel to coal. In this study, for the design of a circulating fluidized bed boiler using wood pellets, a circulating fluidized bed combustion test device using no external heater was manufactured and used. According to the increase of co-combustion rate with wood pellet, combustion fraction and heat flux by combustor height were measured and pollutant emission characteristics were analyzed. In terms of combustibility, the effect on primary and secondary air ratio were also studied. In addition, as a result of analysis of the effect of corrosive nanoparticles on the combustion of coal with wood pellets, it was confirmed that coal is mostly composed of Ca and S, whereas wood pellets are mostly composed of K, Cl, and Na.

Assessments of RELAP5/MOD3.2 and RELAP5/CANDU in a Reactor Inlet Header Break Experiment B9401 of RD-14M

  • A reactor inlet header break experiment, B9401, performed in the RD-14M multi channel test facility was analyzed using RELAP5/MOD3.2 and RELAP5/CANDU[1]. The RELAP5 has been developed for the use in the analysis of the transient behavior of the pressurized water reactor. A recent study showed that the RELAP5 could be feasible even for the simulation of the thermal hydraulic behavior of CANDU reactors. However, some deficiencies in the prediction of fuel sheath temperature and transient behavior in athe headers were identified in the RELAP5 assessments. The RELAP5/CANDU has been developing to resolve the deficiencies in the RELAP5 and to improve the predictability of the thermal-hydraulic behaviors of the CANDU reactors. In the RELAP5/CANDU, critical heat flux model, horizontal flow regime map, heat transfer model in horizontal channel, etc. were modified or added to the RELAP5/MOD3.2. This study aims to identify the applicability of both codes, in particular, in the multi-channel simulation of the CANDU reactors. The RELAP5/MOD3.2 and the RELAP5/CANDU analyses demonstrate the code's capability to predict reasonably the major phenomena occurred during the transient. The thermal-hydraulic behaviors of both codes are almost identical, however, the RELAP5/CANDU predicts better the heater sheath temperature than the RELAP5/MOD3.2. Pressure differences between headers govern the flow characteristics through the heated sections, particularly after the ECI. In determining header pressure, there are many uncertainties arisen from the complicated effects including steady state pressure distribution. Therefore, it would be concluded that further works are required to reduce these uncertainties, and consequently predict appropriately thermal-hydraulic behaviors in the reactor coolant system during LOCA analyses.

실험계획법을 이용한 고효율 소형 열병합 시스템 성능 해석 (Performance Analysis of High Efficiency Co-generation System Using the Experimental Design Method)

  • As a kind of distributed energy system, the co-generation system based Diesel engine using after-treatment device was devised for its environmental friendly and economic qualities. It is utilized in that the electric power is produced by the generator connected to the Diesel engine, and waste heat is recovered from both the exhaust gases and the engine itself by the finned tube and shell & tube heat exchangers. An after-treatment device composed ceramic heater and DOC(Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) is installed at the engine outlet in order to completely reignite the unburned fuel from the Diesel engine. In this study, mutual relation of each experimental condition was derived through minimum number of experiment using Taguchi Design and ANOVA recently used in the various fields. It is found that the total efficiency (thermal efficiency plus electric power generation efficiency) of this system reaches maximum 94.4% which is approximately higher than that of the typical diesel engine exhaust heat recovery system.

정상 및 비정상상태의 화재조건에서 판형 열유속계의 적용성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Applicability of Plate Thermometer in Steady and Unsteady-State Fire Conditions)

  • 정상 및 비정상상태의 화재조건에서 설치가 용이하고 저가형인 판형 열유속계(PT)의 적용성에 대한 실험적 연구가 수행되었다. 열원으로서 적외선 복사 히터와 C3H8이 적용된 정사각형 버너가 사용되었다. PT의 상대적 측정 정확도는 Gardon-type 열유속 미터를 이용한 측정결과와의 비교를 통해 평가되었다. 정상 및 비정상상태의 화재조건에서 PT의 최적 크기 및 두께는 측정 정확도와 실용적 관점에서 각각 100 mm와 0.6 mm로 확인되었다. 이 결과들은 PT의 크기 및 두께의 변화에 따른 전도 열손실과 열관성에 의해 설명되었다. 또한 Slow보다 빠른 화재 성장속도의 조건에서 PT를 이용한 열유속 측정에는 상당한 주의가 요구됨을 확인하였다.

Effects of Hydrogen Sulfide and Siloxane on Landfill Gas Utility Facilities

  • This study examined the emission characteristics of impure gas-like hydrogen sulfide and siloxane contained in landfill gas (LFG) and investigated the effect of impure gas on LFG utility facilities. As a result of an LFG component analysis from eight landfills in the same environment, hydrogen sulfide averaged 436 ppmv (22-1,211 ppmv), and the concentration of total siloxane averaged 7.95 mg/$m^3$ (1.85-21.18 mg/$m^3$). In case of siloxane concentration by component, the ratio of D4 (average 3.79 mg/$m^3$) and D5 (average 2.64 mg/$m^3$) indicated the highest level. Different kinds of scales were found on the gas air heater (GAH) and inside the boiler. The major component of scale from the GAH was $Fe_2O_3$ of 38.5%, and it was caused by hydrogen sulfide. Other scale was found on the bottom and the wall of the boiler and the scale was silicon dioxide of 92.8% and 98.9%. The silicon dioxide scale was caused by combustion of siloxane. As a result of a scanning electron microscopy analysis, the structure of the silicon dioxide scale from the boiler was an immediate filamentous type. Consequently, as silicon dioxide scale is bulky, such bad effects were worsening, as an interruption in heat conduction, increase in fuel consumption, damage to the boiler by overheating, and clogged emission pipeline could occur in LFG utility facilities.
