In order to evaluate the genotoxicity of airborne particulate matter extracted with dichloromethane (APE), the rat microsome mediated (S-9) or DNA repair enzyme treated Comet assays were performed using the single cell gel electrophoresis in A549 human lung carcinoma cells. It was found that the cells interacting with APE showed more DNA single-strand breaks relative to untreated cells. The genotoxicity of APE was increased with the treatment of S-9 mixture. Microsome mediated DNA damage was inhibited by CYP1Al inhibitor, quercetin. The APE also showed oxidative DNA damage evaluated by endonuclease III treatment. Oxidative DNA damage of APE was inhibited by antioxidants such as vita- min C and Trolox. We also found that the vegetables or fruits extract may reduce APE-induced genotoxicity by their anti- oxidant activity and CYP1A1 inhibition.

Diarrhoea is a major health care problem in developing countries. Elettaria cardamomum Maton fruits, commonly known as cardamom are widely used for flavoring purposes in food. In this study we evaluated the antidiarrhoeal activity of hot water extract of cardamom against experimental diarrhoeal models on mice. Cardamom extract showed significant antidiarrhoeal activity against castor oil and magnesium sulphate induced models. Whereas, the gastrointestinal motility was slightly increased.

Polyphenolic compounds widely occurring in the traditional medicine plants have been reported to possess strong antioxidant activity. The antioxidative substances of water soluble extract from leaves, stem bark, root bark and fruit powder of Cudrania tricuspidata were tested in three different in vitro experimental models. In oxidation models using DPPH( , ' diphenyl picrylhydrazyl) method, Fe2+ induced linoleic acid peroxidation, and autooxidation of hepatic microsomal membranes, the antioxidative activities of water soluble extract from stem bark were strong than that from leaves and root bark. Fruits of Cudrania tricuspidata contained the highest amounts of polyphenolic compounds among the parts of this plant. The changes in polyphenolic compound contents of fruit powder caused by heat treatment (20oC, 40oC, and 60oC) were also monitored. After water blanching, contents of phenolic compounds was increased slightly in the following order; 20oC(1454mg), 40oC(1487mg), and 60oC(1511mg). These results supports that water soluble extracts from Cudrania tricuspidata contain antioxidative compounds.
Mandarin orange fruits were artificially contaminated with an organophosphorus insecticide phenthoate by dipping and the residue level of phenthoate was investigated during the purification steps of dietary fiber or bioflavonoid. The removal rate of phenthoate at 8 and 0.5 ppm levels was 98% in the total dietary fiber, 99% in the insoluble dietary fiber and 99.8% in the soluble dietary fiber preparations. Kuring the preparation of biflavonoid from peels at a 5 ppm pesticide level, the removal rate was 90% in the intermediate extract and 99.9% in the final extract. In conclusion, phenthoate residues in the peels of mandarin orange were mostly removed during the preparation processes of dietary fiber of bioflavonoid and its residue level would not raise any problem in safety aspects of the purified products.
An analytical method was developed to determine abamectin and milbemectin residues in apple, pear, and citrus using HPLC with ultraviolet absorption detection. Abamectin and milbemectin were extracted with methanol from apple, pear, and citrus samples. The extract was diluted with saline water and dichloromethane partition was followed to recover the compounds from the aqueous phase. Florisil column chromatography and aminopropyl solid-phase extraction were employed as cleanup methods to remove most of co-extractives from the sample extract. Reverse-phase HPLC using an octadecylsilyl column was successfully applied to separate and quantitate abamectin and milbemectin residues in sample extracts at the wavelength of 245 nm. Recoveries of abamectin and milbemectin from fortified samples ranged 80.4~90.3% and 90.9~96.8%, respectively. Relative standard deviations of the analytical method were less than 10% for both acaricides. Detection limit of the analytical method was 0.003 mg/kg sample for all the analytes. The proposed method was reproducible and sensitive enough to evaluate terminal residues of abamectin and milbemectin in apple, pear, and citrus.

This study relates to a composition for improvement of memory or prevention and treatment of cognitive impairment using waste resources rich in beneficial substances. This study makes good effects to inhibit the activity of acetylcholinesterase in brain tissue and to improve the cognitive functions in a simulation model of cognitive impairment induced by scopolamine, so it can be available in the promotion of memory and the prevention and treatment of cognitive impairment. The composition uses the extract of fruit peels, which have long been used without causing toxicity in a wide range of food applications; therefore, it can be used safely without a risk of side effects, even in the case of a long-term administration for the preventive purpose. Furthermore, this research is a very beneficial invention in the environment-friendly aspect in association with the recycling of resources, as it is based on the novel efficacies of fruit peels, which have been conventionally disposed as a refuse of fruits due to their poor sensory qualities despite the content of beneficial substances.
The present study includes macro and microscopical details, powder study, physico-chemical study and HPTLC fingerprinting of the Piper longum fruits. Microscopic studies revealed the presence of stone cells, starch grains and thin walled fragments of parenchymatous cells. Physico-chemical studies showed alcohol and ether soluble extract 24.53 and 6.7, sugar 0.35, starch 21.33 and tannin 0.83% respectively. Successive soxhlet extract showed maximum percentage of hexane soluble fraction i.e. 22.52. The HPTLC profile has also been performed against the reference marker pipeline, which was identified at R$_f$ 0.42. In the present paper a detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of fruit has been undertaken.
As an attempt to search for bioactive natural constituents exerting antinociceptive and antiinflammatory activities, we examined the potency of the extract of R. coreanus fruits by the activity-guided fractionation. The EtOAc- and BuOH fraction and those alkaline hydrolysates showed significant antinociceptive effects as assessed by writhing-, hot plate- and tail flicks tests in mice and rats as well as antiinflammatory effect in rats with carrageenan-induced edema. BuOH extract was subjected to column chromatography to obtain a large amount of niga-ichigoside F$_1$ (1, 23-hydroxytormentic acid 28-O-glc), which was again hydrolyzed in NaOH solution to yield an aglycone 23-hydroxytormentic acid (1a). This study was aimed at investigating hepatic toxicity and immunomodulating effects of defatted methanol extracts of two kinds of medicinal plants, Rubus coreanus Miq. and Atractylodes japonica Koidz. in mice. Defatted methanol extracts of fruits of Rubus coreanus Miq. and rhizome of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. were added at the level of 0.5% or 5%(w/w) to cholesterol-supplemented AIN-76 diet. Each diet was fed to 8 ICR male mice for 30 days. Weight gain and food efficiency ratio of the mice fed 5.0% extract of Rubus coreanus Miq. were significantly lower than those of the mice fed 0.5% extract Relative liver weight and activity of plasma alanine aminotransfernse were significantly increased only in the mice fed 5% extract of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. compared with the others. Splenocyte proliferation was not significantly different between the groups fed 0.5% or 5.0% extract of Rubus coreanus Miq. However, splenocyte proliferation was significantly decreased in the mice fed 5.0% extract of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. compared with that in the mice fed 0.5% Production of interleukin-2 by splenocytes from the mice fed 0.5% extract of Atractylodes japonica Miq. was significantly higher than the control value and it became lower with 5.0% dietary level. Secretion of $interferon-\gamma$ was not significantly different among groups. In conclusion, the defatted methanol extract of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. was likely to exert immunomodulating effect at the level of 0.5% but it may exert adverse effects on immune and liver functions at the level of 5.0%.

The seeds from two mulberry fruits [Morus alba (MA) and Cudrania tricuspidata (CT)] were examined for their oil content, and fatty acid, phytosterol and tocopherol compositions and contents. Moreover, polyphenolic compounds and biological activity of the two defatted seed residue extracts were also evaluated. Oil contents of MA and CT seeds were 29.36% and 16.69%, respectively, while MeOH extracts of the defatted MA and CT seed residues were 5.10% and 6.22%, respectively. The two seed oils were composed of 81.4 and 74.37% linoleic, 5.75 and 11.39% oleic, 8.40 and 10.18% palmitic acid, and 3.52 and 3.0% stearic acids, and two other minor fatty acids, such as linolenic and arachidic acids. MA seed had higher contents of phytosterols (507.59 mg/100 g of oil), tocopherols (99.64 mg/100 g of oil), and total flavonoid (106.50 mg/100 g of seed) than CT seed, whereas CT seed had higher levels of total polyphenol than MA seed. The MeOH extract of MA seed residue showed higher antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-melanogenic activity than that of CT seed residue. trans-Resveratrol (9.62 mg/100 g), quercetin (54.83 mg/100 g), and 4-prenylmoracin (48.70 mg/100 g), were found to be the main polyphenolic components in the MeOH extract of MA seed residue. These results indicate that MA seeds are good sources of essential dietary phytochemicals with antioxidant, anti-diabetic and anti-melanogenic activity.
