  • Postharvest treatments such as polyethylene film wrapping, ethylene scrubber, and fruit coatings were compared to find a potential effect on the fruit quality in 'Fuji' apples during storage and simulated marketing. Polyethylene film wrapping appeared to be excellent in preventing weight loss during storage but fruits lost weight at a high rate when exposed to ambient temperature during simulated marketing. Also, surface cracking disorder was observed in parts of film-wrapped fruit under marketing condition after storage of 21 weeks. Ethylene scrubber effectively removed ethylene in polyetheylene bags but this effect reduced along with the increase of storage time. Although Prolong-treated fruits were good in appearance at 12-week storage, no beneficial effect was found on the inhibition of weight loss during storage as well as marketing. In addition, wax-like substances were accumulated on the surface after storage of 21 weeks, resulting in the reduction of marketability. Water soluble wax seemed highly effective on the inhibition of weight loss during storage and marketing. However, parts of fruit were severely injured probably due to the high concentration of wax. Undamaged fruit showed excellent appearance in shape and flesh quality even after 21 weeks of storage. Further study is required to find the proper concentration of wax.

  • The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of fruit skin spray of the lime fertilizer in 'Campbell Early' grapes. The T-N, P, K, Ca and Mg of fruit skin and cluster weight, berry weight, cluster length showed no difference between control and lime fertilizer. But soluble solids in fruit was reduced by fruit skin spray of liquid calcium fertilizer extracted from oyster shell after bagging(LCaB). The anthocyanin content of fruit skin was decreased by air-slaked lime(HCa) and LCaB treatment. Also, occurrence of fruit skin bloom was significantly reduced by HCa and oyster shell powder(OS-CaP) treatment. The berry firmness was significantly increased through liquid calcium fertilizer extracted from oyster shell(LCa) and HCa treatment. Conspicuously, berry elasticity was rather decreased by OS-CaP treatment. However, there was no difference of weight loss of fruit among treatments during room temperature storage.

  • Internal fruit rot of cucumber was observed in several locations in Korea. Incidence of the disease reached up to 21.5% and averaged 4.2% in the fields surveyed. The disease started at blossom ends of cucumber fruits. Internal tissues of infected fruit tips showed brown discoloration over 2 cm in length and 2 mm in diameter. Subsequently, the brown discoloration was extended into the carpels, and the surface of the infected fruit tips was rugged. Fungal isolates from the internal tissues of diseased fruits were identified as Didymella bryoniae based on mycological characteristics. Temperature for mycelial growth of isolates ranged $5{\sim}32^{\circ}C$ with optimal temperature between $26{\sim}28^{\circ}C$. Similar symptoms were developed in the internal part of the cucumber fruit when conidial suspensions of the isolates were inoculated to the flower of cucumber. Furthermore, Didymella bryoniae isolates from other plant parts of cucumber, watermelon, oriental melon, melon and pumpkin also showed the similar symptoms in the internal part of cucumber fruits by inoculation tests. Temperature range for occurrence of internal fruit rot of cucumber was $10{\sim}32^{\circ}C$ with optimal temperature of $25{\sim}28^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was carried out to predict fruit surface temperature (FST) causing sunburn symptoms and assess the correlation between solar radiation and FST in satusma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc. 'Iwasaki'). And to reduce sunburn when ambient temperature was at 31℃, sprinkler system was repeated spraying every at 5 minutes of 30 minutes intervals and 1% calcium carbonate and 4% kaolin solution applied on citrus tree three times to investigate quality and sunburn of fruits. It showed highly significant positive correlation between FST and solar radiation (R = 0.788, p < 0.01), The FST increased up to 16℃ than ambient temperature at daytime. To estimate FST, a linear model y = 0.099 × (air temperature) + 0.018 × (solar radiation) + 20.779 (R = 0.687, p < 0.01) was derived. The canopy temperature of citrus trees was 5.1℃ lower in sprinkler system than in control. The incidence of sunburn showed at 2.1% in sprinkler system twice lower than in control and there was different significance. Fruit quality was similar between treatments. In conclusion, sunburn can be reduced by reflecting sunlight or downing of FST through sprinkler system.

  • Tomato russet mite, Aculops lycopersici Massee (Acari. Eriophyidae) was recorded in Korea and their SEM observations, distribution, host range, development on different temperature, and chemical control method were studied. Tomato russet mite is a microscopic animal (134.9 $\mu\textrm{m}$) with 2 pairs of legs which had 4 rays of feathered craw. Infected leaf turn reddish brown, stem loss hair, become shiny or surface cross-cracked, and shoot wilted or shrunk. Surface of fruit around fruit stalk appeared rusted or cross-cracked. It was found in glass greenhouse at Buyeo and Yuseong in Chungnam Province, Pyeongchang in Gangwon Province, and Chilgok and Guryongpo in Gyeongbuk Province. Convolvulus, black nightshade, chinese lanternplant, eggp1ant, morning glory, petunia, potato, pepper, tobacco and tomato were confirmed as a host plant in inoculation test. It could develop at temperature around $15-30^{\circ}C$, it took 6-11 days from eggs to adult, higher temperature shorten its life cycle. Female lived longer than male and it lived as long as 12 days at 25-28"C. Among acaricides tested, fenazaquin and cypermethrin were most effective.tive.

  • The manuscript reports synthesis of exceptionally stable gold nanoparticles (GNPs) using Momordica charantia fruit extract. The synthesis approach was optimized by refining three experimental variables including source of the fruit extract (peel, seed, and seed coat), pH of the solution, and temperature of the reaction medium. As synthesized GNPs showed excellent stability against various thiolated compounds (e.g., thioglycolic acid, thiourea, ${\text\tiny{L}}-cystine$, 1-dodecanethiol, and cysteamine hydrochloride). Moreover, these nanoparticles showed distinctive colorimetric responses against $Cd^{2+}$ and thiophenol (TP) from their potential interferences. The limit of detection (LOD) values for $Cd^{2+}$ and TP were determined as 0.186 and $0.154{\mu}M$, respectively.

  • Hierarchically porous, chemically activated carbon materials are readily derived from biomass using hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and chemical activation processes. In this study, empty fruit bunches (EFB) were chosen as the carbon source due to their sustainability, high lignin-content, abundance, and low cost. The lignin content in the EFB was condensed and carbonized into a bulk non-porous solid via the HTC process, and then transformed into a hierarchical porous structure consisting of macro- and micropores by chemical activation. As confirmed by various characterization results, the optimum activation temperature for supercapacitor applications was determined to be $700^{\circ}C$. The enhanced capacitive performance is attributed to the textural property of the extremely high specific surface area of $2861.4m^2\;g^{-1}$. The prepared material exhibited hierarchical porosity and surface features with oxygen functionalities, such as carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, suitable for pseudocapacitance. Finally, the as-optimized nanoporous carbons exhibited remarkable capacitive performance, with a specific capacitance of $402.3F\;g^{-1}$ at $0.5A\;g^{-1}$, a good rate capability of 79.8% at current densities from $0.5A\;g^{-1}$ to $10A\;g^{-1}$, and excellent life cycle behavior of 10,000 cycles with 96.5% capacitance retention at $20A\;g^{-1}$.

  • The fruit rot of pumpkin caused by Sclerotium rolfsii occurred sporadically at Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Korea in 2004 and 2005. The typical symptom of the disease included water-soaking, fruit rotting and wilting. White mycelial mats were spread over infected fruits and then sclerotia were formed on the lesions and near soil surface. The sclerotia were globoid in shape, 1$\sim$3 mm in size and white to brown in color. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation was at $30^{\circ}C$ on PDA and the hyphal width ranged from 4 to 8 ${\mu}m$. The typical clamp connections were observed in the hyphae of the fungus grown on PDA. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to host plants, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii Saccardo. This is the first report on the fruit rot of Cucurbita spp. caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.

  • Mulberry fruits were semi-dried using hot air ($60-100^{\circ}C$) or cool air ($20-40^{\circ}C$), and the effects of the drying temperature and processing time on the quality of the final dried mulberry fruits were investigated. Response surface methodology was employed to establish a statistical model and predict the conditions resulting in minimal loss of the total phenolic content (TPC) and ascorbic acid. Thus, using overlapped contour plots, the optimal conditions for producing semi-dried mulberry fruits, which reduced the moisture residue to 45% and minimized the nutrient losses of TPC and ascorbic acid, were determined for the hot-air process ($60.7^{\circ}C$ for 5.4 h) and cool-air process ($34.8^{\circ}C$ for 23.3 h). Plus, a higher drying temperature was found to lead to a faster loss of moisture and ascorbic acid, while the TPC was significantly decreased in the cool-air dried mulberry fruits due to the higher activity of polyphenol oxidase between 30 and $40^{\circ}C$.

  • There was no difference in total light transmissivity of covering materials. But the light transmittance of J-2 in greenhouse was by 78.25 which was higher than any other film. The high light transmittance of J-2 was come from low water condensation and dust attached in film surface. The ultraviolet light of J-3 was completely intercepted. The ultraviolet transmittance rate of others was from 62 to 76%. In no heating oriental melon cultivation, the air temperature in tunnel was 15 to $21^{\circ}C$ higher than outer, and the soil temperature in tunnel was 20 to $25^{\circ}C$ higher than outer. Air temperature and soil temperature of J-2 were higher than any other film.
