  • This study is concerned with an effect of frictional condition in a forward/backward combined extrusion process. Generally, the material flow of the billet is influenced by the corners of the die cavity, the ratio in reduction in area, and thickness ratio of backward can thickness to forward can thickness. In addition, the frictional condition in contact area between the billet and the punch/die also affect the material flow. This paper investigated the effect of frictional condition for variable friction factors. The FEM simulation has been carried out in order to examine the effect of frictional condition. Deformation patterns and flow characteristics were examined in terms of design parameters such as extruded length ratio etc. Die pressure exerted on the die-workpiece interface is calculated by the simulation results and analyzed for safe tooling. Therefore the numerical simulation works provide a combined extrusion process of stable cold forging process planning to avoid the severe damage on the tool.

  • The average frictional coefficient was used generally to analyze the working process of the lubricated machine parts. But it is difficult of taking the correct frictional coefficient because the average frictional coefficient of it is progressed always unstably with a large amplitude on working condition. If the correct analysis of frictional coefficient on working condition for the lubricated machine parts can be possible, it can be effect on condition diagnosis of lubricated machine system. This study was carried out to get the optimum working condition of the hydraulic actuator parts using statistical techniques. From this result, it has the lowest friction coefficient in case of applied load of 3 kg and sliding speed of 120 mm/sec.

  • To estimate the possibility in the application of TiN ion-plating to the orthodontic appliance, this study investigated frictional force and frictional coefficient between non-ionplated and TiN ion-plated to the orthodontic appliance. The obtained results were as follows : 1. For each group, the frictional force between metal bracket and arch wire in the wet condition was exhibited lower than that in the dry condition. 2. In the dry condition, the frictional force was lowest with fourth group, and it increased in the order of the 3rd, 1st, and 2nd group. Same situation happened in the wet condition. 3. Experimental results using ceramic & plastic bracket showed that group B was lower than group A, and group D was similar to group C. 4. The surface texture after experiment showed that the scratch due to a friction with bracket was observed in an arch wire of dry contition. Also the surface of bracket was rougher than before. 5. We observed that a specimen surface processed with the TiN ion plating was smoother than that of without the TiN ion plating. 6. The surface texture of a metal bracket and an arch wire in the wet condition was observed smoother than that in the dry condition. 7. In the dry condition, the friction coefficient of each specimen was very similar to each other, but in the wet condition, the friction coefficient of specimen processed with the TiN ion plating showed lower values.

  • The friction of orthodontic appliances is recogonized to be detrimental to tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude of frictional force changes between bracket$(018'\times025'\;solt)$ and orthodontic wires(stainless steel, cobalt-chromium, and $\beta-titanium$, $017'\times0.25'$ rectangular) with time. The wire was secured in the bracket slot with a elastomeric ligature. Frictional forces were measured by universal testing machine. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The frictional forces under dry condition were greater than those in saliva. 2. The frictional forces produced by cobalt-chromium wire were less than those generated by stainless steel and $\beta-titanium$ wire. 3. The frictional forces increased progressively with time, and the amount of increase on first two weeks was greater than on last two weeks. 4. The change of frictional force under dry condition was greater than in artificial saliva.

  • The fault of an automobile transmission gear occurs whenever moving tooth surfaces interact. Such a failure condition has an effect on the frictional factors such as applied load, sliding speed, frictional time and gear oil. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors. In this study, the friction and wear tests were carried out to get the friction characteristics with carburized SCM420 and nitrocarburized NT100 have being used as automobile transmission gear materials. And it was undertaken to analyze the frictional factors that have effect on frictional characteristics by using design of experiment. From this study, the result showed that the applied load in frictional factors was the most important, next to frictional time, sliding speed. And the friction characteristics of nitrocarburized NT100 was more excellent than carburized SCM420.

  • Tooth movement would be impeded by frictional force arised between archwire and tube, bracket or elastics in the fixed orthodontic appliances, which could be changed variably by such several factors as the contact area, normal (perpendicular) force and the condition of contact surface. There were many literatures about frictional force in the orthodontic region, but different results were obtained from little controlled research so that was very difficult in clinical application. Therefore we have reviewed comprehensively previous literatures about frictional force and thus several results were obtained as follows: 1. For use species of the orthodontic wire, frictional force was influenced mainly by surface roughness of wire in the absence of binding, while that was influenced mainly by normal force in high binding angulation. 2. For the cross-section and diameter of the wire, the contact area influenced mainly on frictional force in the absence of binding, while wire stiffness influenced mainly on frictional force in high binding angulation. 3. The greater the bracket width, the greater frictional force, and frictional force of the plastic bracket was larger than that of the metal bracket. 4. For ligation type, frictional force of the stainless steel ligation was larger than that of the elastic ligation, and frictional force was directly proportional to ligation force. 5. Variable frictional force were occured from the saliva combined with such another factors as normal force and mode of surface oxide et al.

  • Translational movement along an arch wire requires sufficient force to overcome frictional forces between bracket and arch wire. The orthodontist must appreciate the importance of friction in this process, and study out the influencing factors on the level of friction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of artificial saliva on frictional resistances generated between the bracket and arch wire. Independent variables of this study were arch wire material, angulation and environment. Static frictional forces of cobalt-chromium, heat-treated cobalt-chromium, beta-titanium, stainless steel wires were measured under non-angulated dry, angulated dry, non-angulated saliva, angulated saliva conditions. The results were as follows: 1. Stainless steel wires showed lower friction values in non-angulated dry condition, and heat-treated cobalt-chromium wires showed higher friction values in angulated dry condition. Higher friction values were showed in order of cobalt-chromium. stainless steel, heat-treated cobalt-chromium and beta-titanium wires in non-angulated saliva condition. and were showed in order of stainless steel, cobalt-chromium, heat-treated cobalt-chromium, beta-titanium wires in angulated saliva condition. 2. Angulation increased friction for stainless steel wires under dry condition. 3. Artificial saliva decreased friction for cobalt-chromium wires and increased friction for stainless steel wires under non-angulated condition. 4. Artificial saliva decreased friction for all wires except beta-titanium wires under angulated condition. 5. Regardless of angulation or environment. heat-treated cobalt-chromium and beta-titanium wires showed higher friction values, and stainless steel wires showed lower friction values.

  • To secure structures from strong earthquakes occurred recently and design economically seismic isolation design is spread rapidly. Specially, frictional isolator has superiority in application to bridge because it has many advantages. however, because isolator lies between pier and girder, responses of pier and superstructure contradict each other and we need to control the two responses to minimize the bridge's failure probability. In this study, frictional coefficient and horizontal stiffness is defined as design parameters of frictional isolator. the optimal design parameters of frictional isolator to minimize the bridge's failure probability are presented according to strength of earthquake and soil conditions. The result says that optimal friction coefficient is higher as the strength of earthquake is increased. And it is also higher as the soils are more flexible. But, optimal horizontal stiffness of rubber spring is insensitive to strength of earthquake and soil condition.

  • This paper presents the estimation of the frictional coefficient of the wheel-legged robot with hip joint actuation producing maximum tractive force. Slip behavior for wheel-legged robot is analytically explored and physically understood by identification of the non-slip condition and derivation of the torque limits satisfying it. Utilizing results of the analysis of slip behavior, the frictional coefficients of the wheel-legged robot during stance phase are numerically estimated and finally this paper suggests the pseudo-algorithm which can not only estimate the frictional coefficients of the wheel-legged robot, but also produce the candidate of the touch down angle for the next stance.
