원주방향 윤활홈을 갖는 엔진 주베어링의 연속 마찰 해석 (Analysis of instantaneous friction in full-circumferentially grooved engine main bearings)

  • The instantaneous friction in main bearings of a single cylinder diesel engine was determined by measuring the instantaneous angular velocity, calculating the resulting forces acting on the bearings, and solving the unsteady Reynolds equation in combination with the mobility method. The considered system consists of only the crankshaft with flywheel and oil pump. The thermal effects were not considered because of the short testing time. The tests were conducted using an electric start motor. The results indicated that when the bearing is not near equilibrium for very small speeds, simple film lubrication theories are not accurate. The details of grooves and unsteady terms in the Reynolds equation cannot be ignored for increasing efficiency of instantaneous friction calculation of the engine bearings. The effects of speed on instantaneous friction and energy lost in friction were determined.

  • A friction force measurement system using the floating liner method was developed to study the frictional behavior of piston rings. The measurement system was carefully designed to control the effect of the piston secondary motion and the temperature of cylinder wall and oil. The friction force between the barrel shaped piston ring and the cylinder liner, was measured under the condition of flooded oil supply. The measured friction forces were classified into five frictional modes with regard to the combination of predominant lubrication regimes(boundary, mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication) and stroke regions(midstroke and dead centers). The modes could be identified on the Stribeck diagram of the friction coefficients and the dimensionless number of ㎼/p, where the friction coefficients are evaluated at near the midstroke and dead centers.

자동차 브레이크 패드의 기계적 특성 연구 (Mechanical Characteristics of Automobile Brake Pads)

  • Brake pads are a component of disc brake system of automobile and consist of steel backing plates and friction material facing the disk brake rotor. Due to the repeated sliding forces and torque in vehicle braking, friction performance of brake pads are ensured. Futhermore, the brake pad is one of major tuning components in aftermarket, mechanical characteristics of the brake pad are necessary to evaluate for establishing the certification standards of tuning components. This study had performed the five specimen tests for friction coefficients and wear loss rates according to the SAE test specification. Using the instrumented indentation method, yield strength and tensile strength were measured. Friction coefficients, 0.386 - 0.489, and wear loss rates, 1.0% - 3.7% are obtained. The range of yield strength and tensile strength are 21.4 MPa - 105.3 MPa and 39.5 MPa - 176.4 MPa respectively.

  • Direct numerical simulations are peformed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow suddenly subjected to spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces in the near-wall region. The Reynolds number based on the inlet momentum thickness and free-stream velocity is $Re_\theta=300$. A fully-implicit fractional step method is employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses are obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin-friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electro-magnetic forces. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques are used to observe the response of streamwise vortices to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are clearly affected by spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces.

  • In micro/nano-scale contacts in MEMS and NEMS, capillary and van der Waals forces generated around contacting micro-asperities significantly influence the performance of concerning device as they are closely related to adhesion and stiction of interacting surfaces. In this regard, it is of prime importance to accurately estimate the magnitude of surface forces so that an optimal solution for reducing friction and adhesion of micro/nano-surfaces may be obtained We introduced an effective method to calculate these surface forces based on topography information obtained from an atomic force microscope. This method was used to calculate surface forces generated in the contact interface formed between diamond-like carbon coating and $Si_3N_4$ ball. This method is shown to effectively demonstrate the influence of capillary force in the contact area, especially in humid atmosphere.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis f3r the piston secondary dynamics and lubrication characteristics of small refrigeration reciprocating compressors is presented. In general, the length of cylinder in this class of compressors is shortened to diminish the frictional losses of the piston-cylinder system. So, the contacting length between piston and cylinder wall is in variable with the rotating crank angle around the BDC of the reciprocating piston. In the problem formulation of the piston dynamics, the change in bearing length of the piston and all corresponding forces and moments are considered in order to determine the piston trajectory, velocity and acceleration at each step. A Newton-Raphson procedure was employed in solving the secondary dynamic equations of the piston. The developed computer program can be used to calculate the entire piston trajectory and the hydrodynamic forces and moments as functions of crank angle under compressor running conditions. The results explored the effects of the radial clearance, lubricant viscosity, and pin location on the stability of the piston, the oil leakage, and friction losses.

세라믹 재료의 미끄럼 환경 변화에 따른 마찰 및 마멸 거동 (Friction and Wear Behavior of Ceramics under Various Sliding Environments)

  • The friction and wear behavior of $Al_{2}O_{3}$, SiC, and $Si_{3}N_{4}$ under the different sliding conditions were investigated. The cylinder-on-disc wear tester was used for a wear test method. Using the servo-motor, the sliding speed did not alternate due to the frictional forces. Three kinds of loads were selected to watch the variation of the wear rates and the frictional forces under a constant speed. Three kinds of sliding conditions were used to see the effects of the oxidation and the abrasion. The dominant wear mechanisms of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ were the abrasion and the formation of transfer layers. The abrasion has a great effect on the wear of SiC. The wear of $Si_{3}N_{4}$ was due to the asperity-failure and the oxidation. Also, the wear rate of each ceramic is shown to be related to the frictional power provided to the tribological system.

인간의 손의 능력을 응용한 로봇 핸드의 힘 제어 (Control of Grasp Forces for Robotic Hands Based on Human Capabilities)

  • This paper discusses a physiological approach motivated by the study of human hands for robot hand force control. It begins with an analysis of the human's grasping behavior to see how humans determine the grasp forces. The human controls the grasp force by sensing the friction force, that is, the weight of the object which is felt on his hand, but when slip is detected by sensing skin acceleration, the grasp force becomes much greater than the minimum force required for grasping by adding the force which is proportional to the acceleration. And two methods that can predict when and how fingers will slip upon a grasped object are considered. To emulate the human's capabilities, we propose a method for determination of as grasp force, which uses the change in the friction force. Experimental results show that the proposed method can be applied to control of robot hands to grasp objects of arbitrary weight stably without skin-like slip sensors.

  • During torsional fatigue of externally cracked cylindrical specimen, crack face rubbing may occur. At this time, normal contact forces arise when shear displacements cause the crack faces to be wedged open due to mismatch of the fracture surface asperities. These normal forces, in turn, generate friction force which act in opposition to the applied shear stresses and reduce the effective stress intensity factor. The premise of the proposed work is that friction and wedging can be studied by measuring the shear and normal displacement across the crack mouth. We have measured the crack mouth compliance using the new biaxial extensometer.

  • 본 연구에서는 면직 및 고무 평벨트에 대하여 베트와 풀리간의 수직 및 접선 마찰력 분포를 측정하고 이들의 마찰특성을 비교하고자 하였다. 마찰접촉면적을 직 접 측정하는 대신, 표면모델에 의한 이론식을 제시하고 이론식과 실험에 의한 수직 및 접선력을 비교하여 마찰면의 표면모델과 마찰계수를 연구하였다.
