A magnetorheological (MR) fluid is a smart material whose rheological behavior can be controlled by varying the parameters of the applied magnetic field. Because the damping force and shear force of an MR fluid can be controlled using a magnetic field, it is widely employed in many industrial applications, such as in vehicle vibration control, powertrains, high-precision grinding processes, valves, and seals. However, the characteristics of friction caused by iron particles inside the MR fluid need to be understood and improved so that it can be used in practical applications. Surface process technologies such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coatings and diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings are widely used to improve the surface friction properties. This study examines the friction characteristics of an MR fluid with different surface process technologies such as PTFE coatings and DLC coatings, by using a reciprocating friction tester. The coefficients of friction are in the following descending order: MR fluid without any coating, MR fluid with a DLC coating, and MR fluid with a PTFE coating. Scanning electron microscopy is used to observe the worn surfaces before and after the experiment. In addition, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy is used to analyze the chemical composition of the worn surface. Through a comparison of the results, the friction characteristics of the MR fluid based on the different coating technologies are analyzed.
Carbon-based coatings, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and buckyball ($C_{60}$), receive much interest because of their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties for a wide range of electromechanical component-based applications. Previous experimental results demonstrate that these carbon-based coatings are promising solid lubricants because of their superior tribological properties, and thus help prolong the lifetime of silicon-based applications. In this study, CNT coatings are deposited on a bare silicon (100) substrate by electrodynamic spraying under different deposition conditions. During the coating deposition, the applied voltage, CNT concentration of the solution, distance between the injecting nozzle and the substrate and diameter of the injecting nozzle are optimized to control the thickness and surface roughness of the CNT coatings. The surface morphology and thickness of the coatings are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The friction and wear properties of the coatings are investigated by using a pin-on-reciprocating-type tribotester under various experimental conditions. The friction coefficient of the CNT coating is as low as 0.15 under high normal loads. The overall results reveal that CNT coatings deposited by electrodynamic spraying provide relatively uniform with superior lubrication performance.

Objective: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the changes in friction between orthodontic brackets and archwires coated with aluminum oxide (Al2O3), titanium nitride (TiN), or chromium nitride (CrN). In addition, the resistance of the coatings to intraoral conditions was evaluated. Methods: Stainless steel canine brackets, 0.016-inch round nickel-titanium archwires, and 0.019 × 0.025-inch stainless steel archwires were coated with Al2O3, TiN, and CrN using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The coated materials were examined using scanning electron microscopy, an X-ray diffractometer, atomic force microscopy, and surface profilometry. In addition, the samples were subjected to thermal cycling and in vitro brushing tests, and the effects of the simulated intraoral conditions on the coating structure were evaluated. Results: Coating of the metal bracket as well as nickel-titanium archwire with Al2O3 reduced the coefficients of friction (CoFs) for the bracket-archwire combination (p < 0.01). When the bracket and stainless steel archwire were coated with Al2O3 and TiN, the CoFs were significantly lower (0.207 and 0.372, respectively) than that recorded when this bracket-archwire combination was left uncoated (0.552; p < 0.01). The friction, thermal, and brushing tests did not deteriorate the overall quality of the Al2O3 coatings; however, some small areas of peeling were evident for the TiN coatings, whereas comparatively larger areas of peeling were observed for the CrN coatings. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the CoFs for metal bracket-archwire combinations used in orthodontic treatment can be decreased by coating with Al2O3 and TiN thin films.

Nanomechanical and electrical properties of vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films across thermal-driven phase transition are investigated with ultra-high vacuum atomic force microscopy. VO2 thin films have been deposited on the n-type heavily doped silicon wafer by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction reveals that it is textured polycrystalline with preferential orientation of (100) and (120) planes in monoclinic phase. As the temperature increases, the friction decreased at the temperature below the transition temperature, and then the friction increased as increasing temperature above the transition temperature. We attribute this observation to the combined effect of the thermal lubricity and electronic contribution in friction. Furthermore, the dependence of nanoscale conductance on the local pressure was indicated at the various temperatures, and the result was discussed in the view of pressure-induced metal-insulator transition.
There is an indispensable need for force calibration for quantitative nanoscale force measurement using atomic force microscopy. Calibrating the normal force is relatively straightforward, whereas doing so for the lateral force is often complicated because of the difficulty in determining the optical lever sensitivity. In particular, the lateral force calibration of a colloidal probe in a liquid environment often has a larger uncertainty as a result of the effects of the epoxy, the location of the colloidal particle on the cantilever, and a decrease in the quality factor. In this work, the lateral force of a colloidal probe using a reference cantilever with a known spring constant was calibrated in a liquid environment. By obtaining the spring constant and the lateral sensitivity at the equator of a spherical colloidal particle, the damage to the bottom surface of the colloidal particle could be eliminated. Further, it was shown that the effect of the contact stiffness on the determination of the lateral spring constant of the cantilever could be minimized. It was concluded that this method can be effectively used for the lateral force calibration of a colloidal probe in a liquid environment.
Nano/micro-scale studies on friction properties were conducted on Si (100) and three self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) (PFOTC, DMDM, DPDM) coated on Si-wafer by chemical vapor deposition technique. Experiments were conducted at ambient temperature $(24{\pm}1^{\circ}C)$ and humidity $(45{\pm}5\%)$. Nano-friction was evaluated using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in the range of 0-40nN normal loads. In both Si-wafer and SAMs, friction increased linearly as a function of applied normal load. Results showed that friction was affected by the inherent adhesion in Si-wafer, and in the case of SAMs the physical/chemical structures had a major influence. Coefficient of friction of these test samples was also evaluated at the micro-scale using a micro-tribotester. It was observed that SAMs had superior frictional property due to their low interfacial energies. In order to study of the effect of contact area on friction coefficient at the micro-scale, friction was measured for Si-wafer and DPDM against Soda Lime balls (Duke Scientific Corporation) of different radii 0.25 mm, 0.5 mm and 1 mm at different applied normal loads $(1500,\;3000\;and\;4800{\mu}N)$. Results showed that Si-wafer had higher friction coefficient than DPDM. Furthermore, unlike that in the case of DPDM, friction was severely influenced by wear in the case of Si-wafer. SEM evidences showed that solid-solid adhesion to be the wear mechanism in Si-wafer.
Abstract : Nano/micro-scale friction properties were investigated on Si (100) and three self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) (PFOTC, DMDM, DPDM) coated on Si-wafer by chemical vapor deposition technique. Experiments were conducted at ambient temperature(24$pm$1$circ$C) and humidity(45$pm$5%). Friction at nano-scale was measured using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in the range of 0-40nN normal loads. In both Si-wafer and SAMs, friction increased linearly as a function of applied normal load. Results showed that friction was affected by the inherent adhesion in Ssi-wafer, and in the case of SAMs the physical/chemical structures had a major influence. Coefficient of friction of these test samples at the micro-scale was also energies. In order to study the effect of contact area on coefficient of friction at the micro-scale, friction was measured for Si-wafer and DPDM against Soda Lime balls (Duke Scientiffic Corporation) of different radii (0.25 mm, 0.5 mm and 1 mm) at different applied normal loads (1500, 3000 and 4800 mN). Results showed that Si-wafer had higher coefficient of friction than DPDM. Further, unlike that in the case of DPDM, friction in Si-wafer was severely influenced by its wear. We investigated the application of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) coatings to fabricate a glass lens manufactured using a glass molding process (GMP). In this work, ta-C coatings with different thickness (50, 100, 150 and 200 nm) were deposited on a tungsten carbide (WC-Co) mold using the X-bend filter of a filtered cathode vacuum arc. The effects of thickness on mechanical and tribological properties of the coating were studied. These ta-C coatings were characterized by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, nano-indentation measurements, Raman spectrometry, Rockwell-C tests, scratch tests and ball on disc tribometer tests. The nano-indentation measurements showed that hardness increased with an increase in coating thickness. In addition, the G-peak position in the Raman spectra analysis was right shifted from 1520 to $1586cm^{-1}$, indicating that the $sp^3$ content increased with increasing thickness of ta-C coatings. The scratch test showed that, compared to other coatings, the 100-nm-thick ta-C coating displayed excellent adhesion strength without delamination. The friction test was carried out in a nitrogen environment using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The 100-nm-thick ta-C coating showed a low friction coefficient of 0.078. When this coating was applied to a GMP, the life time, i.e., shot counts, dramatically increased up to 2,500 counts, in comparison with Ir-Re coating.
Nanotechnology is an important challenge, for which nanoparticle manipulation plays an important role in the assembly of nano elements. In this study, the dynamic equation of system plant is established by van der Waals force, friction, capillary forces etc. To push nanoparticles, strain gauges are used as sensors to actuate an X-Y stage in an atomic force microscopy system. A strategy of pushing nanoparticles is developed based on sliding mode control. Moreover, afuzzy controller is responsible for compensating tip-particle contact loss according to feedback signals of a laser-detector system. According to position control result, experimental results of gold nanoparticle manipulation are presented.
