With the recent development of super-precision optical instruments, camera modules for devices, such as portable terminals and digital camera lenses, are increasingly being used. Since an optical lens is usually produced by high-temperature compression molding methods using tungsten carbide (WC) alloy molding cores, it is necessary to develop and study technology for super-precision processing of molding cores and coatings for the core surface. In this study, Rhenium-Iridium (Re-Ir) thin films were deposited onto a WC molding core using a sputtering system. The Re-Ir thin films were prepared by a multi-target sputtering technique, using iridium, rhenium, and chromium as the sources. Argon and nitrogen were introduced through an inlet into the chamber to be the plasma and reactive gases. The Re-Ir thin films were prepared with targets having a composition ratio of 30 : 70, and the Re-Ir thin films were formed with a 240 nm thickness. Re-Ir thin films on WC molding core were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and Ra (the arithmetical average surface roughness). Also, adhesion strength and coefficient friction of Re-Ir thin films were examined. The Re-Ir coating technique has received intensive attention in the coating processes field because of promising features, such as hardness, high elasticity, abrasion resistance and mechanical stability that result from the process. Re-Ir coating technique has also been applied widely in industrial and biomedical applications. In this study, WC molding core was manufactured, using high-performance precision machining and the effects of the Re-Ir coating on the surface roughness.
This study analyzes the thermal effects on the performance of an air foil thrust bearing (AFTB) using COMSOL Multiphysics to approximate actual bearing behavior under real conditions. An AFTB is a sliding-thrust bearing that uses air as a lubricant to support the axial load. The AFTB consists of top and bump foils and supports the rotating disk through the hydrodynamic pressure generated by the wedge effect from the inclined surface of the top foil and the elastic deformation of the bump foils, similar to a spring. The use of air as a lubricant has some advantages such as low friction loss and less heat generation, enabling air bearings to be widely used in high-speed rotating systems. However, even in AFTB, the effects of energy loss due to viscosity at high speeds, interface frictional heat, and thermal deformation of the foil caused by temperature increase cannot be ignored. Foil deformation derived from the thermal effect influences the minimum decay in film thickness and enhances the film pressure. For these reasons, performance analyses of isothermal AFTBs have shown few discrepancies with real bearing behavior. To account for this phenomenon, a thermal-fluid-structure analysis is conducted to describe the combined mechanics. Results show that the load capacity under the thermal effect is slightly higher than that obtained from isothermal analysis. In addition, the push and pull effects on the top foil and bump foil-free edges can be simulated. The differences between the isothermal and thermal behaviors are discussed.
a-C:H films were coated on windows of mobile telephone by RF plasma chemical vapor deposition equipment made in our company. Thickness of the coatings is about 0.7 micrometers and they have high hardness, low friction coefficient, good adhesion, high optical transparency and chemical inertness. Knoop hardness of the diamond-like carbon films on glass substrate is 2328 kg/mm$^2$. The adherence between films and substrate is good and shows to be 69 N by scratching test. The optical performance is improved obviously owing to coat the film on it. The index of the coated windows is 2.5, transmission of visible light is larger than 90%, and transmission of ultraviolet light decreases by 30% and the ultraviolet light can be obstructed obviously. The coated glass also has self-clean effect and decontamination ability. The films have hydrophobic character and the soakage angle of water drop is larger than 90 degrees. The windows have fog-proof ability owing to eliminate the capillary phenomena in the inner surface. The physics and chemical properties of the coated windows are steady. Study indicates that the performance of a-C:H coated mobile phone windows are improved notably on wear-resistance, corrosion-proof and optical properties and it is excellent mobile windows protective coatings.

Boron nitride (BN) is a highly attractive material for wear resistant applications of mechanical components. BN is super hard and it is the second hardest of all known materials. It also has a high thermal stability, high abrasive wear resistance, and in contrast to diamond, BN does not react with ferrous materials. The motivation of this work is to investigate the tribological properties of BN for potential applications in ultra-precision components for data storage, printing, and other precision devices. In this work, the wear characteristics of BN thin films deposited on DLC or Ti buffer layer with silicon substrate using RF-magnetron sputtering technique were analyzed. Wear tests were conducted by using a pin-on-disk type tester and the wear tracks were measured with a surface profiler. Experimental results showed that wear characteristics were dependent on the sputtering conditions and buffer layer. Particularly, BN coated on DLC layer showed better wear resistant behavior. The range of the wear rates for the BN films tested in this work was about 20 to $100{\mu}m^3$/cycle.

The Diamond Like Carbon(DLC) films for the Electro Optical Tracking System(EOTS) by using Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition(PECVD) method is presented. We achieve that the DLC films can reduce the surface delamination of thermal observation sensor front window due to the high hardness, low friction and chemical inertness which is comparable to a Si film. According to our experiment results, DLC films can be used for various electro optical systems to eliminate surface delamination.

The Ti-Si-N coating layers were synthesized on SKD 11 steel substrate by a DC reactive magnetron co-sputtering technique with separate Ti and Si targets. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses for the coating layers revealed that microstructure of Ti-Si-N layer was nanocomposite, consisting of nano-sized TiN crystallites surrounded by amorphous $Si_3$$N_4$ phase. The highest hardness value of about 39 GPa was obtained at the Si content of ~11at.%, where the microstructure had fine TiN crystallites (about 5nm in size) dispersed uniformly in amorphous matrix. As the Si content in Ti-Si-N films increased, the TiN crystallites became from aligned to randomly oriented microstructure, finer, and fully penetrated by amorphous phase. Free Si appeared in the layers due to the deficit of nitrogen source at higher Si content. Friction coefficient and wear rate of the Ti-Si-N coating layer significantly decreased with increase of relative humidity. The self-lubricating tribe-layers such as $SiO_2$ or (OH)$Si_2$ seemed to play an important role in the wear behavior of Ti-Si-N film against steel.

SMF9060 material is a Fe-based powder sintered alloy that is used for several automobile components such as Synchronize Hub, oil pump and transmission. These components are required excellent wear resistance and durability. In this study, we have performed a dry wear test at the ambient air and Ar gas conditions in the room temperature, and a lubricant wear test at the room temperature and engine oil temperature of $100^{\circ}C$. The amount of wear volume and coefficient friction are measured by a Profilometer and a Ball on disk type wear tester. The wear volume in Ar gas condition was a little higher than that in the ambient air condition. However the wear volume in the lubricant wear condition was much lower than in the dry wear condition. XRD analysis of the debris in Ar gas condition showed that the oxide film was not formed.

This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a HDD spindle system due to the imperfect roundness of a rotating shaft. The shaft of a spindle motor rotates with eccentricity by the unbalanced mass of the rotating part. The eccentricity generates the run-out of a spindle motor which results in the eccentric motion of a rotating part. Roundness of a shaft affects this motion which limits the memory capacity of a HDD. This research proposes a modified Reynolds equation for the coupled journal and thrust FDBs to include the variable film thickness due to the roundness. Finite element method is used to solve the Reynolds equation for the pressure distribution. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress, respectively. The dynamic behavior is determined by solving the equations of a motion of a HDD spindle system in six degrees of freedom with the Runge-Kutta method to characterize the motion of a rotating part. This research shows that the roundness of a rotating shaft causes the excitation frequency with integer multiple of a rotating frequency.

Surface modified carbon nanotubes were applied into the epoxy composites to investigate its tribological property. Carbon nanotubes reinforced epoxy composites were fabricated by casting. Effects to the tribological property of loading concentrations and types of surface modification of carbon nanotubes were investigated under sliding condition using linear reciprocal sliding wear tester. The results show that the small amount of carbon nanotubes into the epoxy exhibited lower weight loss than the pure epoxy. It is concluded that the effect of an enormous aspect ratio of carbon nanotubes surface area which wider than conventional fillers that react as interface for stress transfer. As increased the contents of carbon nanotubes, the weight loss from the wear test was reduced. And the surface modified carbon nanotubes show better tribological property than as produced carbon nanotubes. It is due that a surface modification of carbon nanotubes increases the interfacial bonding between carbon nanotubes and epoxy matrix through chemical bonding. Changes in worn surface morphology are also observed by optical microscope and SEM for investigating wear behaviors. Carbon nanotubes in the epoxy matrix near the surface are exposed, because it becomes the lubricating working film on the worn surface. It reduces the friction and results in the lower surface roughness morphology in the epoxy matrix as increasing the contents of the carbon nanotubes.
The incidence of pulmonary leiomyosarcoma is very rare as a primary lung tumor. Usually, pulmonary leiomyosarcoma arise from the smooth muscle present in the bronchi or blood vessles. We had experienced two cases of primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma. The first case was 28-year old male patient who had been in good health until admission, when he experienced an episode of dyspnea and sudden hemoptysis. The chest X-ray film revealed a large round tumor mass in left lower lobe measuring 6.5x9.5x5.3cm in dimension. On physical examination, the patient was friction rub and rales on the left lower chest and postoperative course was smooth and non-eventful. Emergency left lower lobectomy was performed due to repeated hemoptysis. Chemotheraphy was done postoperatively as an adjuvant therapy. The second case was 52-year-old man who had been well prior to admission, when recently he noticed a abrupt growing tendency of old pulmonary coin lesion in right lower lobe on routine physical examination. Since 1968, small round mass was gradually enlarged very slowly, during recent one year interval, the tumor mass was enlarged abruptly as twice in size on chest X-ray. Bronchoscopic examination revealed no specipic findings. Right lower lobectomy was performed and pathologic examination was answered as primary leiomyosarcoma without lymph node metastasis. Postoperative course was smooth, except local wound infection.
