Surface texturing of tribological applications is an attractive technology of engineered surface. Therefore, reduction of friction is considered to be necessary for improved efficiency of machines. The current study investigated the potential of textured micro-scale grooves on bearing steel flat mated with pin-on-disk. We discuss reducing friction due to the influence of sliding direction at surface pattern. We can indicate lubrication mechanism as a Stribeck curve, which has a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter for the lubrication condition. It was found that the friction coefficient was changed by the surface pattern and sliding direction, even when surface pattern was the same. It was thus verified that micro-scale grooves could affect the friction reduction considerably under mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication conditions. The lubrication regime influences the friction coefficient induced by the sliding direction of groove pattern. The friction coefficient depends on a combination of resistance force and hydrodynamic.
An internal friction model was developed to model the frictional behavior of automotive Constant Velocity (CV) joints by using the test data from an instrumented CV joint friction apparatus with actual driveshaft assemblies. Experiments were conduced under different realistic operating conditions of oscillatory speeds, CV joint articulation angles, lubrication, and torque. The experimental data were used to develop a physics-based semi-empirical CV joint internal friction coefficient model as a function of different CV Joint operating parameters. It was found that the proposed friction model captures the experimental results well not only the static behavior of friction coefficient, but also the dynamic friction terms, which is the main source of force that causes vehicle vibration problems.

This paper proposes a method for measuring friction forces and creating a friction model for a rotary motion control system as well as an autonomous vehicle testbed. The friction forces versus the velocity were measured, and the viscous friction, Coulomb friction, and stiction were identified. With a nominal PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller, we observed the adverse effects due to friction, such as excessive steady-state errors, oscillations, and limit-cycles. By adding an adequate friction model as part of the augmented nonlinear dynamics of a plant, we were able to conduct a simulation study of a motion control system that well matched experimental results. We have observed that the implementation of a model-based friction compensator improves the overall performance of both motion control systems, i.e., the rotary motion control system and the Altino testbed for autonomous vehicle development. By utilizing a better simulation tool with an embedded friction model, we expect that the overall development time and cost can be reduced.
This study is concerned with the production of carbon fiber reinforced carbon(C/C) with polyaromatic mesophase pitch as matrix precursor and with the investigation of friction-wear characteristics in ambient air using a constant speed type of friction tester. The main problem in using the polyaromatic mesophase as the matrix precursor is the high viscosity which may limit the complete impregnation of the fiber preform in the vacuum. To solve these problems two dimensional carbon fiber fabrics were infiltrated with meso-phase pitch in the pitch impregnator. After the impregnation and the heat treatment process. C/C com-posites were characterized by density porosity to monitor the influence of high pressure and temperature. It showed that the bulk density was increased and the apparent porosity and the density increasing rate was reduced as repeating the impregnation the carbonization and the heat treatment. The friction-wear charac-teristics of C/C composites were investigated by measuring the average friction coefficient and the specific wear rate as functions friction speed and friction pressure using a constant speed type of friction tester. C/C composite4s showed the average friction coefficient to be reduced as increasing the friction speed and the friction pressure.

Recently, PTFE-polymide composites are being used self-lubricating parts for industrial field. Thus, this study is mainly concerned with friction and wear properties for the piston ring of non-lubricating air compressor which made of PTFE-polymide composites. The friction and wear test was carried out for the different composition ratio under the atomsphere room temperature and constant load of 7.69N and their friction and wear properties were compared with each other at various sliding speed. notable results are summarized as follows. PTFE 100% showed that friction coefficient was almost same values at 0.94 and 1.88m/s but the value was decreased at 2.83m/s because the friction temperature is higher than low speed. PTFE 80%-PI 20% showed the lowest mean friction coefficient at 2.83m/s. PTFE 20-PI 80% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94m/s and the value was decreased at high speed but the value is higher than other materials except PTFE 100 %. PI 100% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94 and 1.88m/s becuase adhesive wear mainly occurred that speed. PTFE 100% showed highest specific wear rate on the whole. Specific wear rate of PTFE 80%-PI 20% was almost the same value with PTFE 20%-PI80%. PI 100%showed the lowest value at high sliding speed because the friction surface was thicken and carbonated by high friction temperature.
The need for developing a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in tilting pad proceeding bearings has been well-recognized, since previous experimental work about the performances of the bearings hypothesized that the friction in the bearings is closely related to their performances. Especially, the sliding friction between pad and pivot in the ball and socket type of the bearings can influence the performance of the bearing. We propose a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in the ball and socket type, which considers the geometrics of the pad and pivot of the bearings, by assuming the sliding friction in the ball and socket bearing as Coulomb friction. By utilizing the proposed model for pad-pivot friction, we show the analysis of Reynolds equation and energy equation, which explain the thermo-hydrodynamic characteristics of tilting pad proceeding bearings, by taking into account the turbulence and inlet pressure building as well. The results of the study show that the performance of titling-pad proceeding bearings can be greatly influenced by the pad-pivot friction. In particular, we have shown that the analysis of the pad-pivot friction is useful to explain the static proceeding loci and the dynamic characteristics of the ball and socket type of the bearings. Furthermore, for a given operating condition, we can obtain various equilibrium states which satisfy the static equilibrium conditions, by considering the pad-pivot friction.

The present study examined the mechanical properties of the friction welding zone of solid and hollow shafts made with SM20C according to the depth of the notch. Friction welding was conducted at welding conditions of 2,000 rpm, friction pressure of 60MPa, friction time of 1.4 seconds, upset pressure of 100MPa, and upset time of 2.0 seconds. In the tensile strength test, the tensile strength decreased as the depth of the notch increased. Tensile strength was moderately high when the depth of the notch was 2mm. The tensile strength of the welding zone increased as the friction revolution radius increased, because the latter led to the generation of adequate friction heat. According to the hardness test, hardness likewise increased as e friction revolution radius increased. In the bending test, the bend strength of the solid shaft decreased when the depth of the notch was 0-2mm but increased when the latter was 3-5mm. With regard to the hollow shaft, the bend strength drastically decreased when the depth of the notch was 3-4mm. Upon examination it was found that the microstructure became finer when the friction revolution radius increased.

This study deals with the friction welding of SM25C and SCNCrM-2B; The friction time was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution 2,000rpm, friction pressure of 100MPa, upset pressure of l50MPa, and upset time of 4.0 seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests were studied, and so the results were as follows. 1. When the friction time is 2.0 seconds, the tensile strength of friction welds was 874MPa, which is around as much as 117% of the tensile strength of base metal(SM25C), the bending strength of friction welds was 1,354MPa, which is around as much as 108.9% of the bending strength of base metal(SM25C). 2. At the same condition, the maximum vickers hardness was Hv443 at SCNCrM-2B nearby weld interface, which is higher Hv20 than condition of the friction time 0.5 seconds. 3. The results of microstructure analysis show that the structures of two base materials have fractionated and rearranged along a column due to heating and axial force during friction, which has affected in raising hardness and tensile strength.

The sliding friction and wear properties of mineral fiber reinforced composite(MF) and glass fiber reinforced composites(GF) are investigated to clarify their field of use and the role of each fiber in friction material. Friction and wear test reveals that GF composite has better wear resistance even though with low friction coefficient, comparing with MF composite. Glass fiber strengthen effectively the matrix and may absorb friction energy to convert it into the fracture energy of them, as well as its lubricative role. However, mineral fiber in MF composite is too small to strengthen the matrix. Then MF composite are easily plowed and worn out by asperity on counter material. Friction coefficient of MF composite is higher friction coefficient than that of GF composite and varied widely with test.

In Korea, there has been a traditional post and beam wood construction with large roof load. Because a large friction is generated in wooden joint or members, it is important to evaluate the friction between wood members according to wood direction. Because most of studies have been concerned with friction between wood and steel, excluding effect of real area of contact, there are a few studies on the friction between wood members. The object of this study was to evaluate friction or coefficient of friction according to normal force and real area of contact of wood. With Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) test specimens, five steps of normal force and combinations of test were prepared. Results indicated that normal force had almost no affection on the friction, however there was difference about friction or coefficient of friction according to real contact conditions of wood grain and contact area.
