Experimental Study on Fretting Wear of Inconel 690 Under High Temperatures and Pressures (고온 고압 환경에서 인코넬 690 재료의 프레팅 마모 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In a nuclear power plant, fretting wear due to impact motion between U-tubes and support structures located in steam generators can cause serious problems. In order to guarantee the reliability of the steam generator, the damage due to fretting wear should be thoroughly investigated. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the fretting wear mechanism qualitatively and quantitatively. Hence, fretting wear simulation is performed for the environments to which the actual steam generators in nuclear power plants are exposed. Initial experimental results are obtained for various experimental parameters, and the effect of the work rate and temperature on fretting wear is evaluated. In water, the wear coefficients for $90^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, and $340^{\circ}C$ are found to be $9.051{\times}10^{-16}\;Pa^{-1}$, $3.009{\times}10^{-15}\;Pa^{-1}$, and $2.235{\times}10^{-15}\;Pa^{-1}$, respectively. It is also found that the wear coefficient at room temperature is larger than that at low temperature in water because of the dynamic viscosity of water.

  • This study investigates the safety assessment of the potential for fretting-wear damages caused by foreign object in operating nuclear power plants. To get the natural frequency, corresponding mode shape and participation factor, modal analyses are performed for the helical type tubes with various conditions. The wear rate of helical type tube caused by foreign object is calculated using the Archard formula and the remaining life of the tube is predicted, and discussed in this study is the effect of the vibration of the tube on the remaining life of the tube. In addition, addressed is the effect of the external pressure on the vibration and fretting-wear characteristics of the tube.

  • Fretting wear test in room temperature water was performed to evaluate the wear coefficient of Inconel 600,690 (Pressurized Water Reactor, PWR) and Alloy 800 (CANadian DeuteriumUranium, CANDU) steam generator (SG) tubes against ferritic and martensitic stainless steels. The main focus is to compare the wear behaviors between Alloy 800 and Inconel alloys. Test conditions are $10{\sim}30N$ of normal load, $200{\sim}450{\mu}m$ of sliding amplitude and 30Hz of frequency. The result indicated that the wear rate of Alloy 800 was higher than those of Inconel 690 at various test condition such as normal loads, sliding amplitudes etc. From the results of SEM observation, there was little evidence of plastic deformation layer that were dominantly formed on the worn surfaces of Inconel 690. Also, wear particles in Alloy 800 were released from contacting asperities deformed by severe plastic flow during fretting wear. Main cause of wear rate between Alloy 800 and Inconel 690 may be due to the difference of hardness between martensitic and ferritic stainless steel. The wear rate and wear mechanism of two tubes in room temperature water are discussed.

Crack Analysis under Fretting Condition by Rounded Punch (라운딩 펀치에 의한 프레팅 상태에서의 균열 해석)

  • Surface edge crack subjected to contact stresses is analysed. A punch with corner radii is considered to press the semi-infinite plane. Partial slip problem is solved when a shear force is applied to the punch. Dislocation density function method is used to solve the present mixed mode crack problem. The crack length of positive K1 is examined, which is affected by the ratio of the flat portion to the total width of the punch. Surface traction during one cycle of the shear force is evaluated to simulate the fretting condition. The compliance change of the contact surface is also investigated during the shear cycle. It is found that the crack grows during only a part of the cycle, which may be termed as effective period of crack growing. A design method for restraining the fretting failure is discussed, from which recommendable geometry of the punch is suggested.

Wear Mechanism of Tube Fretting Affected by Support Shapes

  • A fretting wear experiment in roam temperature air was performed to evaluate the wear mechanism of fuel rod using a fretting wear tester, which has been developed for experimental study, The main focus was to compare the wear behaviors of fuel rod against support springs with different contact contours (i.e. concave and convex). Wear volume, degree or surface hardening and adhesion tendency of wear particle were examined by the surface roughness tester. The result indicated that with a change of contact condition from contact force of 5 N to 0.1 mm gap, the wear volume of tube increased in the condition of concave spring, but slowly decreased in convex spring. From the results of SEM observation, wear mechanism of each test condition was also dependent on the spring shapes. The wear mechanism of each test condition in room temperature air is discussed.

  • The failure mode of steel road wheels in a vehicle is cracks from ventilation hole through to contact plane on steel wheel's disc plate. But a number of cracks of Cornering Fatigue Limit Test is on contact plane near to wheel nut mounting area, even though it's satisfied with specified cycles. So this paper searches out causes to improve durability and reliability of C.F.T by uni-axial bending moment test. The verified cause is a "fretting" on contact area of steel wheel. In result, this paper suggests a solution to prevent a fretting by inserting a damping shim, 0.7mm between steel wheel contact areas. Therefore this paper makes it possible to move crack position of C.F.T in steel wheel from contact plane to vehicle's failure mode.

  • Fluid-elastic instability is believed to be a cause of the large-amplitude vibration and resulting rapid wear of heat exchanger tubes when the flow velocity exceeds a critical value. For sub-critical flow velocities, the random turbulence excitation is the main mechanism to be considered in predicting the long-term wear of steam generator tubes. Since flow-induced interactions of the tubes with tube supports in the sub-critical flow velocity can cause a localized tube wear, tube movement in the clearance between the tube and tube support as well as the normal contact force on the tubes by fluid should be maintained as low as possible. A simplified method is used for predicting fretting-wear damage of the double $90^{\circ}$U-bend tubes. The approach employed is based on the straight single-span tube analytical model proposed by Connors, the linear structural dynamic theory of Appendix N-1300 to ASME Section III and the Archard's equation for adhesive wear. Results from the presented method show a similar trend compared with the field data. This method can be utilized to predict the fretting-wear of the double $90^{\circ}$U-bend tubes in steam generators.

  • Tubes in nuclear steam generators are held up by supports because the tubes are long and slender. Fluid flows of high-pressure and high-temperature in the tubes cause oscillating motions between tubes and supports. This is called as FIV (flow induced vibration), which causes fretting wear in contact parts of tube-support. The fretting wear of tube-support can threaten the safety of nuclear power plant. The tube and support materials were Inconel 690 and STS 409. The wear tests were conducted in various environments, which are in water without flow, in flowing water and in flowing water with air. The results showed that the flow of water influenced on the wear-life of tube. The wear-life of tube decreased in water flow as compared with wear-life in stationary water.

A Study on the Characteristics of the Tube-to-Support Dynamic Impact Force Measurement Facility (튜브와 지지대 사이의 동적상호 충격력 측정장치 특성규명에 관한 연구)

  • Flow-induced vibration in heat exchanger (or fuel rod) in nuclar power plant can cause dynamic interactions between tubes and tube supports resulting in fretting-wear. To increase the reliability and design life of heat exchanger components, design criteria that establish acceptable limits of vibration and minimize fretting wear are necessary. The fretting-wear rate is dependent upon material combination, contact configuration, environmental conditions and tube-to tube support dynamic interaction. It is demostrated that the fretting -wear rate correlates well with tube-to-support contact force or work rate. The tube-to-support dynamic interaction, which consists of dynamic contact forces and tube motion, is used to relate single-span wear data to real heat exchanger configurations consisting of multi-span tube bundles. This paper describes the test facility to measure tube-to-support dynamic impact force and reports its dynamic characteristics through the four impact tests - a force transduces independent and external impact tests, central ring inside impact test and additional cylinder impact test. Through the tests the impact parameter change dependent upon the material difference of impacting ball is studied, and the impact parameters of Force Transducer Assembly components are measured. And also the dynamic behavior of Force Transducer Assembly is analyzed. The force measurement technique herein is shown to provide a reasonable measure of dynamic contact forces.
