Doam Bay is an estuary where harmful algal blooms (HABs) such as red tides develop frequently in summer. The bay also is influenced by freshwater inflow from Tamjin River in upper regions as well as from an artificial lake in lower regions. Phytoplankton size and species composition were investigated at six stations located in the lower regions in April, June and July, 2007. Physical properties (temperature, salinity and SS) were intensively measured for 3 days (5 occasions) after the freshwater discharges from the dike. The freshwater discharge affected temperature, salinity and turbidity in the study sites adjacent to the freshwater lake. Phytoplankton biomass was larger in April than June and it increased more in July. An explicit shift of species composition was observed. Diatoms were dominant in April and June (>70%) whereas their abundances greatly decreased and chlorophytes increased in July. Pseudo-nitzschia sp. was dominant at all stations (except St. 2) and this change was also detected in ecological indices such as diversity and dominance index.

The transports of the seasonal freshwater and salt from surface to 500 m depth in the tropical Atlantic Ocean are derived from the equations of the continuity and saltconservation, respectively. The freshwater transport is obtained by southward integration of the divergence of surface freshwater flux, using climatological freshwater(i. e. precipitation, evaporation, and river discharge) data. The annual freshwater transport is northward, ranging from 0 Sv near the equator to 0.3 Sv at $12^{\circ}{\;}N{\;}and{\;}20^{\circ}{\;}S$. The seasonal meridional transport amounts of freshwater range from 1.35 Sv to-0.45 Sv. The strong northward freshwater transports prevail for the intraseasonal period summer to fall. This seasonal cycle is caused by the shifts of the ITCZ as well as the changes in the local freshwater storage. Annual and seasonal salt transports are calculated from objectively analyzed historical (1900-86) salinity observations. The annual salt flux in the ocean zero, showing that the salt flux by horizontal advection balances the flux by horizontal diffusion. The salt flux due to the diffusion is northward, and has a maximum of $5{\;}{\times}{\;}10^6kg/s$ at 15oN. Seasonal transport amounts of salt range from $30{\;}{\times}{\;}10^6kg/s{\;}to{\;}-35{\;}{\times}10^6kg/s$. The direction of the seasonal salt transports is northward except for the intraseasonal period summer to fall.

In this study, field measurements were conducted in the section about 7 km from sea dike to westward. The observations of along channel current were carried out, and water temperature and salinity were measured simultaneously at 10 stations during one tidal cycle, and sampling interval is 1 hour. The maximum ebb current is about 1.5 m/s at the surface layer but flood current is 0.4 m/s at the bottom layer during discharge period. Residual current during river discharge shows two layer structures which is typical characteristic of the estuary system. On the other hand, residual current during a period with no discharge has shown multi-layer structure different from general estuarine systems. The distribution of high salinity can be seen at the bottom layer as the effect of discharge does not reach down to the bottom layer during discharge. As a result, freshwater is not effected at the bottom layer during observation, and mixing of surface layer to bottom layer is reduced by stratification.

The results of radioecological monitoring of the cooling pond Beloyarsk NPP (Russia) have been presented. The influence of waste technological waters of thermal and fast NPP reactors on the content of artificial radionuclides in surface waters and bottom sediments of the Beloyarsk reservoir has been studied. The long-term dynamics of the specific activity of 60Co, 90Sr, 137Cs and 3H in the main components of the freshwater ecosystem at different distances from the source of radionuclide discharge has been estimated. Critical radionuclides (60Co and 137Cs), routes of their entry and periods of maximum discharge of radioisotopes into the cooling pond have been determined. It is shown that the technology of electricity generation at Beloyarsk NPP, based on fast reactors, has a much smaller effect on the flow of artificial radionuclides into the freshwater ecosystem of the reservoir. During the entire period of monitoring studies, the decrease in the specific activity of radionuclides from NPP origin in surface waters was 4.3-74.5 times, in bottom sediments 10-505 times. The maximum discharge of artificial radionuclides into the reservoir was noted during the period of restoration and decontamination work aimed at eliminating emergencies at the AMB thermal reactors of the first stage of the Beloyarsk NPP.
Behaviors of effulent are observed and discussed with reference to the tide and freshwater discharge in the estuary of Suyoung Bay. The esturine front is located at $0.5{\sim}1.3km$ seaward from of the Suyoung Bridge at the spring tide, and $0.8{\sim}1.0km$ at the neap tide. After the heavy precipitations, the front moved seaward and was located at $1.3{\sim}2.5km$ southeast of the Suyoung Bridge. Internal Froude numbers in the estuarine salinity front are estimated approximately to be 1 both at the spring and neap tide. Entrainment coefficient decreases down stream to the estuarine front, and then increases seaward from the estuarine front due to the tidal mixing.

To investigate temporal and spatial variations of hydrodynamics and environmental conditions in Gyeonggi Bay, including Han River estuary, numerical experiments were performed using 3-dimensional fine grid numerical ocean model. The model successfully reproduced the physical phenomena already known in Gyeonggi Bay where tide and fresh water discharge are dominant forcings. The calculated harmonic constants of tide and tidal current agreed well with those of observations at nine tide stations and two tidal current stations. Tidal asymmetries along the Yeomha Waterway, mainly caused by non-linear effect, were well reproduced and agreed well with observations. Time series of salinity at four stations(A, B, C and D) and horizontal distributions of monthly averaged salinity show that Gyodong and Seokmo Waterways play an important role in fresh water discharge into the Gyeonggi Bay rather than Yeomha Waterway.
Estuary is a transitional zone between river and ocean environment that receives the maritime and riverine influence simultaneously. Estuaries are the most productive habitats because their incoming water provides large quantities of nutrients. The Seomjin River estuary, located in the middle south of Korea, has no barrage and shows natural characteristic of estuary. However, due to dredging and reclamation the environment of the estuary has been changed significantly in the river mouth. In addition, increased freshwater intake in midstream of the Seomjin River results in salinity intrusion. In this paper salinity variation in downstream estuary of the Seomjin River has been simulated and tested using EFDC model. The results of simulation were compared with measured data collected at three points, Culture & Art Center, Sumjin Iron Bridge, and Mokdori, located at 9Km, 14Km, and 15.5Km respectively from downstream estuary. Based on the simulated results, the contribution of the flushing discharge has been evaluated in preventing the salinity intrusion by increasing the discharge flowrates released from the Juam dam.

Interest in effluent treatment is currently increasing and the use of polymetric coagulants is considered as a pretreatment of physical filtration prior to effluent discharge to increase solids recovery. A jar test evaluated effluent treatment efficiency of polymeric coagulants for semi-recirculating aquaculture systems. The particle coagulation efficiency and distribution were evaluated at different polymer dosages in freshwater and seawater effluents. The polymer was added at 0.005-0.08 mL/g of total suspended solids (TSS) in the effluents. TSS in the supernatant after coagulation decreased with increasing polymer dose in the freshwater, while showing no corresponding changes with dose in the seawater. However, in all treatments for both effluents, the removal efficiency was above 90%, regardless of the dose in the tested range. Both the De Brouckere Mean Diameter (DBMD) and volumetric median diameter (VMD) were all above 100 ㎛ in the freshwater effluent. In the seawater effluent, the particle size appeared to be larger than that in freshwater, ranging from 400-1,000 ㎛ for both DBMD and VMD. Considering that the typical pore size of physical filtration in aquaculture is between 60 and 200 ㎛, the use of polymers is expected to improve the practicality of physical filtration for efficient treatment.

Nakdong River Estuary is affected by the dam, barrage construction and dredge and reclaim worked artificially. So, we have studied the area input both freshwater and sea water to understand marine environment of Nakdong River estuary related to the effect of artificial work from 2013 to 2015. As a result, The discharge flow to the estuary remarkably decreased before barrage construction and the average of salinity at the estuary increased. So, the brackish water zone reduced under the influence of decreased discharge flow. The major sources of nitrate and silicate were freshwater, phosphate supplied from bottom and the open sea water. The concentration of phosphate and dissolved oxygen (DO) decreased remarkably in spring and summer. we investigated that phosphate in freshwater was removed under the influence of the estuary dam and phosphate in sea water was removed under the influence of phytoplankton. The low concentration of DO was due to decomposition of the organic compound by microorganism after phytoplankton blooms. Generally, the concentrations of chlorophyll-a in summer was higher than spring and fall. Therefore, the change of ecosystem in Nakdong river estuary was due to decrease of freshwater influx, the other change is facing because of the barrage.
The Nakdong Estuary Barrage is a tidal river environment where freshwater and seawater meet. This requires systematic monitoring of both surface water discharged from the estuary barrage and submarine groundwater discharge. In this study, upstream hydrograph and water balance analysis were used to calculate the change in water storage and discharge of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage. Submarine groundwater discharge was also calculated based on remote sensing-based digital elevation model data and hydrological modeling data, and compared with the estimated surface water discharge for analysis. Our proposed method can be efficiently applied to water resource management by utilizing remote sensing-based altimeter data other than field measurement. Because submarine groundwater discharge plays a significant role on the coastal environment as well as surface water discharge from an estuary barrage, studies on groundwatersurface water interactions in a river estuary should be sufficiently considered in monitoring the ecosystem of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage.
