Surirella atomus Hustedt 1955, surirelloid diatom, were obtained from Hampyeong Bay, Mu-an, in the west coast of Korea. We describe the first record of S. atomus in Korea and report its ultrastructure and molecular characteristics for the first time. For molecular analysis, rbcL gene and cob gene were sequenced. This species is very small in size, making it difficult to observe its morphological features under a light microscope. Even with a scanning electron microscope, it has no unique structure in the valve. It is morphologically very simple. This rare species was known as a marine benthic species. However, it appears to be widely distributed in marine, freshwater, and brackish environments according to the literature documenting this species. In terms of phylogeny, S. atomus has been tentatively linked to Petrodictyon gemma, but the phylogenetic placement of S. atomus seems to be still uncertain, in a manner that is similar to S. febigeri. However, morphological observations derived from this study suggest that this species belongs to the genus Surirella.
A indigenous freshwater bivalve Unio douglasiae was introduced to compare the differences in the efficacy of algal bloom control and the appearances of mussel-mediated adverse effects between two different reservoirs such as mesotrophic (Shingu r.) and hypertrophic (Seokmun r.). We constructed the study mesocosm in the shore of each reservoir, stocked the mussel at density of $30indiv./m^3$ for 7 days, and measured daily the phytoplankton density and water quality. In mesotrophic reservoir, even though approximately 38% of suspended solids and chlorophyll-a was reduced by stocked bivalves for the first 3 days, algal density, ammonia and soluble reactive phosphorus gradually increased with increasing mussel death. In hypertrophic reservoir, mussels strongly inhibited suspended solids and chlorophyll-a by the termination of study with no increase of mussel death and nutrient, especially ammonia concentration. In both reservoirs, a strong selectivity showed mussels preferred to diatom rather than cyanobacteria and green algae without algal density and nutrient level. Our results indicate that an introduction of freshwater bivalve U. douglasiae is more strategic to improve water quality of hypertrophic than mesotrophic reservoir, but many preliminary studies on the treatment method and the selection of target water system are required.

Biomass and species composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton along the salinity gradients in the Seomjin River estuary were investigated in March, July, September and November, 1999. The locations of sampling sites were set based on the surface salinity during each cruise rather than geographic locations. A total of 96 phytoplankton species were identified with 60 diatom species in the study area. The species number of green algae was relatively high in low salinity region while the number of dinoflagellates increased in high salinity areas. Monthly mean of phytoplankton biomass ranged from 183 cells/ml to 833 cells/ml. There was a diatom bloom of Skeletonema costatum in November at the 5-15 psu salinity region and sharp decrease of biomass in very low salinity region occurred in March. During the rainy season in July with the salinity less than 8.1 psu, the green algae dominated in most of the study areas. Chroomonas spp. were highly dominant in March and September and the biomass increased towards the high salinity regions. A total of 83 zooplankton taxa were identified with 72 marine and 11 freshwater taxa. Major group of marine form was copepods with34 taxonomic groups. Most freshwater taxa were aquatic insects. Threshold salinities of freshwater zooplankton appearance were 8.1 psu in July, 4.7 psu in September, and 0.2 psu in November. The number of taxa appeared and abundances of zooplanktons were minimal in the middle of salinity gradients in this estuary.
Myrionecta rubra, a mixotrophic ciliate, is a cosmopolitan red tide species which is commonly found in neritic and estuarine waters. M. rubra had long been listed as an “nculturable protist”until 2 different laboratory strains were finally established in 2 research groups at the beginning of this century, enabling us to perform initiative investigation into various aspect of the live M. rubra strains (Gustafson et al. 2000; Yih et al. 2004b; Johnson and Stoecker 2005). Field sampling was carried out on high tide at 2 fixed stations around Kunsan Inner Harbor (St.1 near the Estuarine Weir and St.2 off Kunsan Ferry Station) every other day for 4 months from mid-February 2004 to understand detailed figure of the recurrent spring blooms of M. rubra following the onset of the water gates operation of the Keum River Estuarine Weir on August 1994. With its maximum abundance of 272 cells mL$^{-1}$ in St.1, fluctuation pattern of the M. rubra population at the 2 stations was strikingly similar. Notable growth of M. rubra population started on late April, to cause M. rubra red tides during one month from mid-May in which “xceptionally low salinity days”without its red tide were intermittently inserted. High abundance of M. rubra over 50 cells mL$^{-1}$ was recorded at samples with their water temperature and salinity higher than 15${^{\circ}C}$ and 4.0 psu, respectively. During pre-bloom period when salinity fluctuation is moderate and the water temperature is cooler than 15°C, Skeletonema costatum, a chain-forming centric diatom, was most dominant. Cyanobacterial species such as Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Phormidium sp. replaced other dominant phytoplankters on the days with “xceptionally low salinity”even during the main blooming period of M. rubra. To summarize, M. rubra could form spring blooms in Keum River Estuary when the level of salinity fluctuation was more severe than that for the dominant diatom Skeletonema costatum and milder than that for the predominance by freshwater cyanobacteria. Therefore, optimal control of the scale and frequency of freshwater discharges might lead us to partially modify the fluctuation pattern of M. rubra populations as well as the period of spring blooms by M. rubra in Keum River Estuary. Sampling time interval of 2 days for the present study or daily sampling was concluded to be minimally required for the detailed exploration into the spring blooms by M. rubra populations in estuaries with weirs like Keum River Estuary.

The construction of river mouth dam has prevented seawater from backwarding to upstream in Kum river estuary since 1990. Field observation on environmental factors, and zooplankton and phytoplankton dynamics have been carried out three times with two month interval in the summer and autumn in 2000 at three selected stations in Kum river estuary. Blockade of seawater flowing backward to upstream caused sharp contrast of zooplankton fauna and phytoplankton flora between upstream and downstream of the river mouth dam. Freshwater cladocerans i.e., Bosmina longisrostris and Daphnia galeata dominated in the upstream, and marine copepods of Acartia omorii and Paracalanus crassirostris occurred abundantly in downstream of the dam. Freshwater diatoms did not distributed in the downstream of the dam except Melosira varians, while marine diatom of Cylidrotheca closterium occurred in benthic waters bath in upstream and downstream of the dam. The construction of the river mouth dam seems to play an ecological role to blockade the input of marine organism into the upstream in Kum river estuary.
After the completion of the Nakdong River estuary barrage, environmental characteristics and phytoplankton communities in the estuary were investigated from April to December, 1989. dissolved oxygen seems to have decreased in the just lower region of the barrage off Janglim, while ammonia and phosphate concentration increased, probably due to the waste discharge from the Janglim stream and stagnation of water after the barrage construction. Concentrations of nitrate and dissolved silicate were negatively correlated with salinity, suggesting that major source is the Nakdong River discharge. In April, there was a diatom (Asterinella sp.) bloom in the upper region of the barrage, while in July, a diatom (Skeletonema costatum) bloom in the estuary mouth. The green and blue-green algae in species composition seem to have increased after the barrage construction. The relatively high concentration of chlorophyll b in the upper region of the barrage probably result from the high density of freshwater green-algae there. Among the species occurred in the study area, many were indicative of water pollution. It seems that environmental characters and phytoplankton communities are changing after the barrage construction.
The abnomal responseses on growth and morphology of attached diatoms by various heavy metals were studied. Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Compère was employed as experimental species and exposed to the five heavy metals such as Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, and As with four concentrations (0, 0.01, 0.1, and 2 mg L-1), respectively. The samples of Ulnaria ulna were examined on the changes of cell growth and teratological forms on the 7th, 14th, 21th, and 28th day, respectively, after exposure to the heavy metals. The samples exposed to the highest concentration, 2.0 mg L-1, of all the heavy metals showed the most obvious decreases of growth. The samples exposed to Cd (μ=0.049day-1) and As (μ=0.048day-1) showed the highest decreasing rate of growth (p=0.021(Cd), p=0.002(As)) and the highest morphological changes of diatom valves were also samples exposed to Cd (10.41%) and As (10.13%) (p=0.009 (Cd), p=0.005(As)). In contrast, Pb induced the lowest decreasing rate (μ=0.090 day-1) and the least change in valve morphology (3.31%). The Cd and As showed relatively stronger effects on growth rates compared to Cu, Zn, and Pb. For the percentage of emergence of morphological species by the type, the highest percentage were observed in sampled exposed to type 1 (43.4%) and followed by type 2 (29.1%). The type 2 and 4 were most abundant in samples exposed to Zn and Pb while the type 3 was most abundant in Cd and As. The Cu induced only type 1, suggesting that the frequency of emergence of each type varied among hevay metals. This research suggests that the degrees of abnomal changes on growth rate and valve morphology of Ulnaria ulna can be used as a bioindicater species for heavy metal contamination in freshwater.
Grazing effects of a freshwater bivalve, Unio douglasiae, on both the phytoplankton communities of cold- and warm eutrophic lakes were examined in aquarium with sediment. The animal U. douglasiae used in the study was collected from the Gunsan (Jeonbuk), acclimatized in laboratory aquaria with washed sand from the mussel collection stream, and starved for $2{\sim}3$ days by the experiment. Grazing experiments were performed with the surface waters collected from Lake Ilgam (Seoul) in the cold period (March 31, 2008), and the warm period (June 19, 2008), respectively. Results clearly showed that the concentration of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and algal abundance were decreased with the increase of mussel-treated density and treated-time. At the same animal density, U. douglasiae effectively decreased the chl-a of cold-lake water (CW), compared to warm-lake water (WW). Increasing the mussel density, the filtering rate (or algal abundance) of the mussel on the CW gradually decreased, while those of WW did not increase or decrease. Major phytoplankton species Synedra ulna and Stephanodiscus hantzschii, and Scenedesmus ecornis in CW, and those of Tetraedron regulare and Pediastrum simplex in WW, were quickly decreased after the mussel stocking. Interestingly, cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in WW, not dominant species, were less removed. These results suggest that a freshwater bivalve U. douglasiae have a strategic potential to control dense hibernal diatom or green algae, rather than the cyanobacterial bloom in eutrophic water.
This study was conducted to elucidate the structure of river ecosystem in the watershed of the Seom River and Hoengseong Reservoir located in Hoengseong of Kangwon Province from February to October 2007. Topics of the survey were mainly rainfall, discharge, water quality in abiotic factors and attached algae, benthic macroinvertebrates, fish, birds and mammals of flora and fauna in a biotic factors, respectively. Specifically, the Seom River could be seen as a typical flow rate of the stream is controlled to the effect of the dam. Basic water qualities were great to seasonal effects, it was relatively clean. Diatom Achnanthes, Cymbella, Gomphonema, and Navicula were distributed predominantly in the periphytic algae. Benthic macroinvertebrates were mostly aquatic insects and freshwater shellfish, the aquatic insects were abundant Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera. Freshwater fish was the dominant Zacco platypus, fish species varied toward the downstream. Birds were mainly observed in four species, and species Egretta garzetta, which was distributed in a wide area of the Seom River. In mammals, Lutra lutra of Mustelidae was identified that the number of inhabit widely. In aspects of the ecological trophic level, the Seom River was maintained at a relatively stable state in the producer and the consumer relationship. The results of this study will expected to be utilized as a useful data for understanding the structure and function of the lotic and lentic ecosystems.
To collect the diatom species belonging to the genus Hantzschia, bottom sediments were collected from 32 sampling sites in 23 sand-flat areas in the intertidal zone and river reaches of Nakdong River estuary, Korea. The sand sediments contained a total of 19 species of genus Hantzschia, Hantzschia amphioxys (Ehrenberg) Grunow, H. amphioxys f. capitata O. Muller, H. baltica Simonsen, H. distinctepunctata (Hustedt) Hustedt, H. elegantula (Østrup) Witkowski et al., H. longiareolata Garcia-Baptista, H. marina (Donkin) Grunow, H. pseudomarina Hustedt, H. virgata (Roper) Grunow, H. virgata var. gracilis Hustedt, H. virgata var. kariana Grunow, H. virgata var. leptocephala Østrup and H. weyprechtii Grunow, including six unconfirmed species. Eleven Hantzschia species are reported as new to Korea. Hantzschia virgata, its infraspecies, and neighboring speceis showed large morphological variations within a single species or among the closely related species. Hantzschia amphioxys, H. distinctepunctata, and H. virgata var. leptocephala prefer freshwater habitats in the upper reaches of the river, while others occurred mainly in the sand flats composed of coarse sand in the intertidal area. In the estuarine sediments, the Hantzschia taxa are classified to be typical sand-attached forms.
