  • In order to determine the influence of nitrogen on agronomic characters, forage yield and quality, a Kenaf was cultured on the volcanic ash soil at the Experimental Farm of Cheju national University under the seven levels of nitrogen rates(0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250kg/ha) from April 25 to Dec. 25, 1999. The plant height increased by increase of nitrogen rate, showing longest 250kg/ha with 286.6cm and shortest at no application plot with 255.7cm. The difference on leaf number, leaf withering number, stem diameter and branches number by nitrogen rate showed a similar tendency to the plant height. Increasing N rate from 0 to 250kg/ha fresh forage yield form 55.8 to 99.8MT/ha, dry matter (DM) yield from 8.8 to 15.8MT/ha, crude protein(CP) yield form 1.2 to 3.1MT/ha, total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield from 3.8 to 8.6MT/ha. However, no significant differences in these yields were found between 200 and 250kg N/ha. Nitrogen uptake increased form 192.9 to 496.2 kg/ha but N use efficiency decreased form 95.0 to 66.6 kg DM$^{a}$ /kg N with increasing from 0 to 250 kg/ha. As N rate increased from 0 to 250kg/ha, leaf and stem out of CP, crude fat (CF), nitrogen free extract (NFE), TDN contents increased from 20.1% to 25.8% and from 9.7% to 12.4%, from 5.6% to 8.1% and from 3.3% to 4.4%, from 36.1% to 40.2% and from 21.9% to 32.4%, from 59.3% to 75.0% and from 32.2% to 38.2%, respectively, while leaf and stem out of crude fiber decreased from 18.5% to 16.7% and from 51.5% to 39.3%. Based on the these findings, the optimum N rate for forage production of kenaf seems to be about 200 kg/ha in atmospheric phenomena and volcanic ash soils of jeju island.

  • In order to identify the growth characterization, the yield and chemical composition of Jeju barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli var. fiurnentacea(Roxb) Wight) based on seeding date in Jeju region, seeding carried out the 10-day intervals from March 27 to September 30 in 2000, respectively. Plant height was 143.2 cm, showing the highest on seeding date, April 6 among that of any other seeding date. On the other hand, those of early and late seeding gradually decrease. Plant height was 119.2 an in May 16 seeding. The results of stem diameter, number of withering leaves, number of leaves and fresh weight per plant were similar to those of the plant heights. The yield of fresh, dry matter forage, crude protein and TDN found the highest on April 6 seeding, 63.5 MT/ha, 13.9 MTha, 1.1 MT/ha, and 7.6 MT/ha, respectively. In early and late seeding, the yield was gradually decreased. In seeding May 16, the yield found .38.2 MTIha in fresh forage, 6.2 MTha in dry matter forage, 0.7 MT/ha in crude protein and 3.7 MTha in TDN, respectively. According to delaying the seeding date, March 27 to May 16, the contents of crude protein (from 7.9 to 10.8%), ether extract (from 4.6 to 6.0%), nitrogen free extract (from 45.1 to 46.5%), and TDN (from 54.2 to 60.8%) were gradually increased, respectively. On the other hand, those of crude fiber (from 28.9 to 25.6%) and crud ash (from 13.5 to 11.2%) were decreased. These results showed that April 6 was the optimum seeding date with the sole object of feed production of Jeju barnyard grass under the environmental condition like as atmospheric phenomena and soil in Jeju region. • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of planting density on plant growth, yield, and quality in the sweet sorghum cultivar 'Chorong' (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). Plants were cultivated at densities of 16.7, 11.1, 8.3, 6.7, and $5.6plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$. Factors related to yield and yield components were analyzed using correlation and multivariate analyses. There was no significant difference among plant densities in stem length from 20 to 110 days after sowing. But the stem diameter was thin, and a decrease in number of tillers occurred more rapidly as planting density increased. At harvest, juice and sugar yield were higher at densities of 16.7 (42.9, $4.16Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$, respectively) and 11.1 (37.1, $3.73Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$) $plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$ than at 8.3 (30.5, $2.96Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$), 6.7 (26.6, $2.41Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$), and 5.6 (24.7, $2.22Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$) $plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$. The soluble solids and total sugar contents were not different among treatments, but relatively high values were observed at the density of 11.1 and $8.3plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$. As plant density was increased from 5.6 to $11.1plants{\cdot}m^{-2}$, the lodging index (1 = no, 9 = lodging) increased rapidly from 2.00 to 6.33. To determine the optimal planting density, the number of typhoons and topographical characteristics should be considered. Correlation and principal components analyses revealed that plant density exhibited a positive relationship with fresh stem yield ($r=0.62^{**}$), dry stem yield ($r=0.58^{**}$), juice ($r=0.63^{**}$), and sugar yield ($r=0.66^{**}$), but a negative with stem diameter ($r=-0.65^{**}$). The yield factors were not statistically related to stem height, diameter, and number of nodes.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the influence of variouis organic substrates on growth and yield of organically grown ginseng seedlings in a shaded plastic house. In the investigation of optimal substrate, the eight substrate were formulated by adjusting blending rate of peatmoss, perlite, coir dust(coco peat), and vermiculite. Then, the changes in physico chemical properties of root substrates as well as their influences on the growth characteristics and yield were determined at six months after sowing. The elevation of the blending rate of peatmoss from 50% to 70% with decrease in the rate of inorganic component (mixture of perlite and vermiculite) from 50 to 30% resulted in the increase in container capacities and decrease in total porosities and air-filled capacities. The concentrations of $NH_4-N$, $P_2O_5$ and K increased as the incorporation rate of castor seed meal, phosphate ore, and langbenite, respectively, were elevated during the root medium formulations. The PPV-1 and PPV-4 substrates produced high stem length, stem diameter, shoot fresh weight, leaf area and root length among eight substrate. Root fresh weight was heaviest in PPV-4 compound nursery media. The results of this experiment will be utilized in the new substrate application for ginseng organic culture in shaded vinyl house.

  • To determine the optimal application level of fertilizers, nitrogen, phosphate, potassium and lime in ramie(Beohmeria nivia Hooker et Arnot), the experiments were conducted for four years from seedling stage propagated by suckers to fully-grown stage under various comibinations of $N, P_2O_5, O$ and lime. Increasing in application rate of N and $K_2$O enhanced stem growth of ramie greatly, and it appeared that lime application also had large effect on increase of stem growth. Yield increased greatly by increasing of application rate with two or three times in N and two times in $K_2$O as much as the standard application rate of fertilizers N-$P_2O_5$-$K_2$O =9-3-9kg/l0a. Especially, treatment with 18kg N, 3kg $P_2O_5, $, 18kg $K_2$O and 200kg lime per l0a showed higher percentage of productive culm and increased yield of crude fiber about 33%. The variation among treatments was relatively small in stem length but larger in fresh weight of shoot and stem. The variation was large at early stage of experiment, that is, from one to two years after planting, but decreased progressively from three years after planting. There was no large difference in number of stems among application rates of fertilizers from three years after planting which was fully-grown stage. However, increasing in application rate of Nand $K_2$O twice as much as the standard rate had large effect on increasing the percentage of productive culm, and hence increased yield greatly.

  • Growth and yield of licorice were investigated under the different conditions of ridge height, planting density, and irrigation in order to establish its cultural practices for the domestic production with the aim to substitute the import. Seedlings were grown under low ridge(20cm) and high ridge(40cm) in low density plot(60$\times$30cm) and high density plot(40$\times$30cm), respectively. The low ridge cultivation of large seedlings increased plant height and root length under low density, and stem and root diameter under high density compared to the high ridge cultivation. In the high ridge cultivation, high density plot was 1.1 to 1.3 times in plant height, root length, stem and root diameter as high as low density one. Fresh and dry weight of plant and root in high ridge were 1.3 to 1.5 times as high as those in low one. The growth of small seedlings(4~10g) were generally poor compared to that of large seedlings. High density plot in low ridge showed the good growth characteristics including plant height, root length, stem and root diameter, and number of branch. High density plot was 1.4 to 1.6 times in fresh and dry weight of plant and root as high as low density plot. In the seasonal changes of growth under various irrigation regimes, the twice irrigation a day produced the more number of leaf than the other regimes since around 46 days after transplanting. The former irrigation resulted in 1.2 to 1.4 times in plant height as long as the other irrigations around 26 days after transplanting and then the difference was increased to 1.6 to 2.0 times around 64 days after transplanting. Under the twice irrigation a day, plant height, root length, stem diameter, root diameter, number of leaf, fresh plant weight, dry plant weight, fresh root weight, dry root weight were 1.6 to 2.0, 1.1, 1.2 to 1.6, 1.3 to 1.8, 1.9 to 2.7, 1.7 to 8.0, 1.6 to 2.8,2.0 to 3.0, 1.6 to 2.7 times as high as those under the other irrigation regimes, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the soil mulching effect on growth and yield of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. The number of stem, stem diameter, and fresh weight of aerial part in black poly-ethylene film and transparent poly-ethylene film mulched condition were higher than those of non-mulching and rice-straw mulching. Number of flowers were high in the order of non-mulching, rice-straw, trans-P. E. film, and black P. E. film. Yield of underground part was higher in mulching condition than that of non-mulching. Dry rhizome yield in black P. E. film mulching was significantly high to compare with the other treatments. There was lower disease incidence of Phytophthora blight in trans-P. E and black P. E. film compare with the other treatments but any difference was not observed in essential oil content of rhizome. Significant positive correlation was found between rhizome weight and fresh weight of aerial part. It was also shown that the fresh weight of aerial part was greatly dependent on the number of stems and stem diameter.

  • Drainage is needed to run off excessive water stress during the rainy season for soybean cultivation in the converted upland from paddy field. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of planting dates and drainage methods on growth and yield of sprout soybeans in the converted upland from paddy field. The stem and root growth at flowering stage showed no difference by drainage method but plant height, number of nodes and branches, and fresh weight of stem and root were much greater as planting date delayed. Seed yield was correlated positively with fresh weight of stem and root, and T/R ratio at the flowering stage, respectively. Lodging degree was not different by drainage method but was higher in planting at June 16 than May 15. Number of pods and 100 seed weight were not different by drainage method and 100 seed weight was heavy in Eunhakong, light in Kwangankong as planting date delayed. Higher seed yield was observed in surface drainage than open ditched drainage. Yield performance of Eunhakong was good in late planting, while that of Kwangankong was in early planting.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of brushing on overgrowth inhibition, growth, yield and starch content in spring-grown potato in the netted house. The plant growth of aerial parts was inhibited with growth stage and brushing duration. Especially, The number of lateral branches decreased greatly with brushing duration. The stem length and stem diameter were not different significantly between brushing and non-brushing on May 6. But the stem length was long in later growth stage but short in longer brushing duration. Chlorophyll content by SPAD increased with growth stage regardless of non-brushing duration and ranged from 30 to 36 mg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The fresh and dry weight of aerial part and tuber were heavy in longer brushing duration. Starch content was higher in brushing treatment as compared to non-brushing and increased with brushing duration.
