Mode I fracture toughness ( $K_{IC}$) of the frozen rocks and that of the frozen-thawed rocks were obtained by using BDT and CCNBD specimens. The test temperatures ranged from +$25^{\circ}C$ to -16$0^{\circ}C$. Wet and air-dry specimens of granite and sandstone were used in order to investigate the effect of water and porosity on fracture toughness. The SEM images of the frozen-thawed rocks were also analysed to check the density of thermal cracks. The $K_{IC}$ of the frozen rocks increased as the test temperature went down. The rate of increase was higher in wet condition than in dry condition and the rate of increase for wet granite was higher than that for wet sandstone. The $K_{IC}$ of the frozen-thawed rocks varied within 15% from the $K_{IC}$ of the rocks at room temperature. After one freeze-thaw process, thermal crack occurred in granite but no thermal cracks occurred in sandstone. And the crack density was increased as the temperature went down.n.

This paper was analized the thermal conductivity of polystylene (TENSAR- GEOGRID) embeding into the subbase through frost penetration depth, frost heave, change of bearing capacity, and soil moisture movement due to freezing, thawing and icing actions, and their results were as follows : 1.The change of temperature into the sub-base was much increased by the Tensar-Geogrid insertion, and the frost penetration and frost heave were decreased as the thinner of the insulation thickness but the thawing velocity of melting period was appeared to be faster in case of non-insulated. 2.The frost heave had a close relationship with the thickness of insulations which was reasonably included anti-frost effects. 3.The moisture content during the freezing period of upper layer of the insulation insertion was increased by 15 per cent but it was returned to initial state of the thawing period, and at the down layer temporarily increased by 10 per cent and returned to the original state at once. 4.The insulation was acted as a function of distribution of surcharge, and the settlement of the sub-base was about 1.5 mm under 15 tonnage of load and which was included within the allowable limits. 5.The sliding resistance due to the icing which was induced by the insulation insertion into the sub-base was appeared as more 40 per cent than noninsulation area, so that the insulations should be restricted on the place such as mountains, curved and cross area which were required the braking power under the traffics.

The growth in fast-track construction and repair has prompted major efforts to develop high-early-strength concrete mix compositions. Such mixtures rely on the use of relatively high cement contents and accelerator dosages to increase the rate of strength development. The measures, however, seem to compromise the long-term performance of concrete in applications such as full-depth patches as evidenced by occasional premature deterioration of such patches. The hypothesis successfully validated in this research was that traditional methods of increasing the early-age strength of concrete, involving the use of high cement and accelerator contents, increase the moisture and thermal movements of concrete. Restraint of such movements in actual field conditions, by external or internal restraining factors, generates tensile stresses which introduced microcracks and thus increase the permeability of concrete. This increase in permeability accelerates various processes of concrete deterioration, including freeze-thaw attack. Fiver reinforcement of concrete is an effective approach to the control of microcrack and crack development under tensile stresses. Fibers, however, have not been known of accelerating the process of strength gain in concrete. The recently developed specialty cellulose fibers, however, were found in this research to be highly effective in increasing the early-age strength of concrete. This provides a unique opportunity to increase the rate of strength gain in concrete without increasing moisture an thermal movements, which actually controlling the processes of microcracking and racking in concrete. Laboratory test results confirmed the desirable resistance of specialty cellulose fiber reinforced High-early-strength concrete to restrained shrinkage microcracking an cracking, and to different processes of deterioration under weathering effects.

Bare-topped thufur is called as frost scars, implying the rupturing stage of vegetated mounds, Field observations and measurements provide empirical information on the process and factors of thufur disintegration in Mt. Halla, Initial bare patches on mound apexes are scaled up by continuous removal of soil and vegetation, resulting in the formation of crater-like thufur, Frost action plays a primary role in thufur disintegration, In particular, pipkrake loosens soil particles within the bare patches and subsequently accelerates the degradation of vegetated mounds during periods with frequent diurnal freeze-thaw cycle and high soil moisture, Deflation also has an impact on thufur breakup in that the bare patches usually lack upper dark brown soil and are covered with granules, Withered shrubs such as Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii are frequently observed in frost scars and disrupted mounds, indicating that thufur disintegration has been probably influenced by global warming.
Based on the results of Part 1 of our two-parts paper, the possibility on field applicability of CMDS(Coal Mine Drainage Sludge) mixed with bentonite and cement as a liner in landfill sites was investigated. The optimum moisture content that met the landfill liner condition was obtained when the ratio of CMDS: bentonite: cement was 1: 0.5: 0.3 in a lab-scale. The relative compaction was measured in 90.1%, which results for construction field have been generally acceptable. In this study, a large-scale Lysimeter($1.0m{\times}1.5m{\times}2.0m$) was used to simulate the effects of the layer on the freeze/thaw by -20 average temperature. The mixture after freezing/thawing showed compressive strength more than $5kg/cm^2$, which was satisfied with EPA standards. Initial permeability of CMDS was $7.10{\times}10^{-7}cm/s$ and permeability its mixture after freezing/thawing was increased to $9.80{\times}10^{-7}cm/s$. The change of temperature in the layers rises and falls with linear and temperature gradient keep maintain the present state. Moisture contents in the layers have not been radically changed. Through the leaching test determined by KSLT method, it was found that heavy metals excluding Zn and Ni were not leached out or leached out less than the standards during 7 cycles of freezing/thawing process. Since it shows the increased permeability about 1.5 times and slight change in moisture content, but it was satisfied with EPA standar through 7 cycles of freezing/thawing process, this mixture can be applied as a liner in landfill final cover system.
In order to understand response of geo-structures to the freezing-thawing process in the ground, it is necessary to consider phase change of the pore water of the ground and also to understand soil interaction with structures. In this study, numerical analysis was carried out for freezing and thawing effect on the modular road system. Neumann's theoretical equation for freezing-thawing processes in porous media can be used to estimate frozen depth and heaving from basic soil properties and ground and surface temperature, but its application is limited to the case for the sediment with fully saturated condition and zero unfrozen water content. Numerical analysis of the modular road system was performed on various soil types and different ground water table as the varying freezing index. The amount of heaving in the silty soil was much larger than those in granite weathered soil or sandy soil, and lowering groundwater level reduced ground heaving induced by freezing. Numerical analysis for temperature history of the ground surface predicted residual heaving near the surface by the freeze-thaw process in silty soil. It ought to reduce stiffness and bearing capacity of the ground so that it will impair stability and serviceability of new road system. However, the amount of residual heaving was insignificant for the road system installed in weathered soil granite and sandy soil. Since modular road system is a pavement structure mounted on the supporting substructure unlike the prevalent road pavement system, strict criteria should be applied for uniform and differential settlement of the pavement system.
Winterkill can be defined as any injury including freeze stress kill, winter desiccation, and low temperature disease to turfgrass plants that occurs during the winter period. The major damages from winterkill were low temperature kill, crown hydration, and winter desiccation. Low temperature kill is caused by air and soil temperature. Soil temperature affect more severe to turfgrass than air temperature because low soil temperature cause fetal damage to turfgrass crown. Crown hydration is a form of winter injury in which intercellular water within the plant freezes and causes physical injury to the cell membrane and wall. This is eventually resulted in dehydration of cell. Winter desiccation is the death of leaves or whole plants due to drought during the winter period. To reduce winterkill damage, cultivar selection is very important. If changing cultivar is not allowed, cold temperature hardiness needs to be increased by providing nutrients especially phosphorus and potassium in the late fall. Turf cover is effective way to reduce winterkill damage. Remaining snow is positive process to reduce winterkill damage by insulating soil temperature. The previous researches reported many materials as turf cover such as straw, polypropylene, polyester, and wood mat. Aeration and topdressing is one of the process against winterkill. Both methods are mainly conducted to reduce thickness of thatch layer. In recent, relatively new materials called black or winter topdressing sand are used to protect soil temperature from low air temperature and thaw ice crystal that may remain in soil.
Fine-size exposed aggregate portland cement concrete pavements (FEACP) have surface texture of exposed aggregate by removing upper 2$\sim$3mm mortar of surface of which curing is delayed by using delay-setting agent. FEACPs have advantages of maintaining low-noise and adequate skid-resistance level during the performance period than general portland cement concrete pavements. It is necessary to ensure the durability environmental loading to prevent unexpected distress during the service life of FEACP. In the process of curing, volume change accompanied change in by moisture and temperature could be an important cause of crack in concrete to construct for successful FEACP, The use of chloride containing deicer may accelerate defects of concrete pavement, such as crack and scaling. This study aim to evaluate environmental loading resistance of FEACP, based on the estimation of shrinkage-crack-control-capability by moisture evaporation and scaling by deicer in freeze-thaw reaction.
Recently, many efforts have been made to construct the first unlined tunnel, without in-situ concrete lining, in Korea. However, the lack of reliability in the performance of shotcrete as permanent tunnel support prevented from its realization. Shotcrete has been regarded to have significant problems in field application and long term performance because of unsatisfactory strength level and durability compared to those of European countries. In this study, the high strength shotcrete satisfying compressive strength over 40 MPa and flexural strength over 4.5 MPa was developed from optimized mix design. The type of accelerators and the amount of silica fume were selected as the main factors in mixing process and the analyses were carried out up to the elapsed time of 2 years. In order to evaluate the short term durability of shotcrete, an array of laboratory test consisting of freeze-thaw, carbonation chloride penetration and permeability test was performed. For long-term durability tests, specimens have been put in an operated highway tunnel to expose them to the similar environment when they are actually used as an unlined tunnel support. From the strength and durability tests, it was found that only alkali-free based accelerator satisfied the target strength of this study and also, the developed shotcrete showed very high performance in its durability.

In this study, as one of solutions associated with the shortage of treatment area of industrial waste and the containment of its harmful components, the bottom ash which is known to be by-products of thermoelectric power plant was selected and its applicability for aggregate of concrete mixture was measured. Hardness test, sieve analysis, water-absorption test and SEM analysis were carried out to investigate the possibility of using bottom ash as a replacement of coarse and fine aggregate. Chemical analyses such as ignition loss test and X-ray incidence were carried out also. In addition, values for slump, strength, permeability, freeze and thaw, and carbonation were evaluated in terms of effects of replacement ratio of bottom ash. As the results, it was found that, though bottom ash is in short supply of fine particles and is in lack of cohesion, these problems can be solved by partially mixing with natural aggregates or improving in a process of production. In addition, bottom ash has not only advantage of durability but also acquirement of general compressive strengths in case that a certain proportion of natural aggregate is applied to mixture, in spite that unit water or chemical admixture should be increased to acquire good workability due to plenty of porosity.
