  • In this paper, the inverse shape design is introduced using the permeable wall boundary condition. Inverse shape design defines the blade shape for the prescribed Mach numbers or pressure distribution on its surface. It calculates the normal mass flux from the difference between the calculated and prescribed pressure at the surface. A new geometry can be achieved after applying the quasi one-dimensional continuity equation from the leading edge to the trailing edge. For validation of this method, two test cases are studied. The first test case of inverse shape design illustrates the cosine bump with a strong shock. After seven geometry modifications, the shock-free bump geometry can be obtained. The second example concerns the redesign of a transonic turbine cascade. The initial isentropic Mach distribution has a peak on the upper surface. The target isentropic Mach number distribution was imposed smoothly. The peak of Mach distribution has disappeared at the final geometry. This proposed inverse design method has proven to be an efficient and robust tool in turbomachinery design fields.

  • This article investigates numerical modeling of surface piercing propeller (SPP) in unsteady open water condition using boundary element method. The home code based on BEM has been developed for the prediction of propeller performance, unsteady ventilation pattern and cross flow effect on partially submerged propellers. To achieve accurate results and correct behavior extraction of the ventilation zone, finely mesh has generated around the propeller and especially in the situation intersection of propeller with the free surface. Hydrodynamic coefficients and ventilation pattern on key blade of SPP are calculated in the different advance coefficients. The values obtained from this numerical simulation are plotted and the results are compared with experiments data and ventilation observations. The predicted ventilated open water performances of the SPP as well as ventilation pattern are in good agreement with experimental data. Finally, the results of the BEM code/experiment comparisons are discussed.

  • A computational investigation is conducted on free convection from a thin plate having a surface heat source. The thermal configuration simulates the recently-proposed transparent film heater made of a single-walled carbon nanotube film on a glass substrate. The Navier-Stokes computations are carried out to study laminar free convection from the heater. Parallel numerical experiments are performed by using a simplified design analysis model which solve the conduction equation with the boundary conditions utilizing several existing correlations for convective heat transfer coefficient. Comparison leads to the most suitable boundary condition for the thermal model to evaluate the performance evaluation of a transparent thin-film heater.

  • The hydrodynamic problem is treated here when a pressurized bag is submerged partially in the water and the end points of it oscillate. SES(Surface Effect Ship) has a bag filled with pressurized air at the stern in order to prevent the air leakage, and the pitch motion of SES is largely affected by the hydrodynamic force of the bag. The shape of a bag can be determined with the pressure difference between inside and outside. Once the hydrodynamic pressure is given, the shape of a bag can be obtained, however in order to calculate the hydrodynamic pressure we should know the shape change of the bag, and vice versa. Therefore the type of boundary condition on the surface of a bag is a moving boundary like a free surface boundary. The present paper describes the formulation of this problem and treats a linearized problem. The computations of the radiation problem for an oscillating bag are shown in comparison with the case that the bag is treated as a rigid body. The hydrodynamic forces are calculated for various values of the pressure inside the bag and the submerged depth.

  • This paper presents a theoretical analysis for the free vibration of rectangular tanks partially filled with an ideal liquid. Wet dynamic displacements of the tanks are approximated by combining the orthogonal polynomials satisfying the boundary conditions, since the rectangular tanks are composed of four rectangular plates. The classical boundary conditions of the tanks at the top and bottom ends are considered, such as clamped, simply supported, and clamped-free boundary conditions. As the facing rectangular plates are assumed to be geometrically and structurally identical, the vibration modes of the facing plates of the tanks can be divided into two categories: symmetric and antisymmetric modes with respect to the planes passing through the center of the tanks and perpendicular to the free liquid surface. The liquid displacement potentials satisfying the Laplace equation and liquid boundary conditions are derived, and the wet dynamic modal functions of a quarter of the tanks can be expanded by the finite Fourier transform for compatibility requirements along the contacting surfaces between the tanks and liquid. An eigenvalue problem is derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. Consequently, the wet natural frequencies of the rectangular tanks can be extracted. The proposed analytical method is verified by observing an excellent agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The effects of the liquid level and boundary condition at the top and bottom edges are investigated.

  • Wave breaking phenomenon near the fore body of a ship is numerically simulated. The ship advance with uniform velocity in calm water. For the simulation, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation are adopted as governing equations. The simulation is carried out in staggered variable mesh system with finite difference method. Marker and Cell(MAC) method and Marker-Density method are employed to track the free surface. Body boundary conditions are satisfied with the adoption of porosity method and no-slip condition on the hull surface. The ship model has a wedge type fore-body, and the computational domain is an appropriate region around the fore-body. The computation results are compared with some experimental results. Also the difference of the free surface tracking methods are discussed.

  • Wave propagation in a three-dimensional (3D) fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) is studied based on velocity potential theory. The governing Laplace equation with fully nonlinear boundary conditions on the moving free surface is solved using the indirect desingularized boundary integral equation method (DBIEM). The fourth-order predictor-corrector Adams-Bashforth-Moulton scheme (ABM4) and mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) method are used for the time-stepping integration of the free surface boundary conditions. A smoothing algorithm, B-spline, is applied to eliminate the possible saw-tooth instabilities. The artificial wave speed employed in MTF (multi-transmitting formula) approach is investigated for fully nonlinear wave problem. The numerical results from incorporating the damping zone (DZ), MTF and MTF coupled DZ (MTF+DZ) methods as radiation condition are compared with analytical solution. An effective MTF+DZ method is finally adopted to simulate the 3D linear wave, second-order wave and irregular wave propagation. It is shown that the MTF+DZ method can be used for simulating fully nonlinear wave propagation very efficiently.

  • Despite growing interest in Ge as a possible alternative to Si, reliable data on Ge surface has been relatively scarce. Using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we investigate band-bending effects of localized charge traps at Ge(001) surface at 78 K. For this investigation, we prepared nearly defect-free Ge(001) surface by keeping the background pressure to < $1{\times}10^{-10}$ mbar during outgassing. Ge(001) surfaces this obtained exhibit a flat-band condition, and deposition of charge traps induce a distinct, sharp boundary between pinned and depinned surface area in the constant current mode STM images. We will show the tip-surface interaction plays an essential role in producing the boundary, and discuss about the conditions that enable the pinning effect.
